Nominating Our Community Champions

May 16, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

It’s time to shine a light on outstanding locals with nominations now open for the 2019 Australia Post One Netball Community Awards. In its sixth year, the awards celebrate our community champions in clubs and associations across the country who go above and beyond to ensure that everyone, of all backgrounds and abilities, are welcome in netball.

Australia Post General Manager Community & Philatelic, Andrea Pearman said the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards highlight a positive change underway across Australia that tells the stories of passionate quiet achievers who are creating more inclusive communities through netball.

“Past winners have demonstrated a commitment to creating welcoming environments for existing and new participants including people with disability, regional and remote communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, multicultural communities, and socio-economically disadvantaged communities.”

“With inspirational and empowering stories each year, we will again celebrate unsung heroes who are helping change our local communities through netball,” said Andrea.

Australian Diamonds and Melbourne Vixens player, and Australia Post One Netball Ambassador, Caitlin Thwaites, said that the awards were helping transform communities, with volunteers supporting activities and initiatives that break down barriers.

Each winner will receive prizes worth more than $1,000 including an Australia Post Gift Card for the winners’ club or association, a netball signed by the 2019 Australian Diamonds team, and a visit from an Australia Post One Netball Ambassador to the club or association.

Nominations are now open until Sunday, 30th June, with one winner from each State and Territory to be chosen and announced on Thursday, 15 August. To nominate for this year’s awards go to onenetball.org.au.

Good Scores In Monthly Medal

May 9, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Monthly Medal, sponsored by Adept Plumbing, was played on Saturday with 70 players looking to take the honours. Andrew Dukes had a superb round to return the best score on the day.

The A-Grade went to Andrew Dukes with a nett 68, despite missing a short 2-footer on the 18th. Runner-up was John Betland, finishing with a nett 71.

The B-Grade was won by Bob Borger, nett 71, ahead of runner-up Tony Cogswell with a majestic nett 72.

The C-Graders were also on form, with Bruce Chandler (Nett 70) winning on count back ahead of runner-up Nick Ryan (70).

The ball sweep went to 73 nett: 68 – A Dukes; 70 – B Chandler, N Ryan; 71 – J Betland, B Slack-Smith, R Borger; 72 – D McAuliffe, K Sanderson, T Cogswell; 73 – D Bayley, M McGlashan, G Webb, A Tucker, G Falvey, D Culley, A Alley, S French, N McMillan.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – C McMillan; 18th – G Webb.

And a welcome to visitors M McGlashan and L Buesnell from Parkes, Craig Taylor from Mudgee and previous champ, Danny Acret from Penrith.

The Medal winners played well on the day but the range of scores in each grade was quite remarkable, especially when a name is put beside a score. Best to say that for some players, they have had better days, much better days.

There was no Stableford Medley on Sunday due to the playing of the Forbes Ladies Open, in which over 70 players participated, representing 19 clubs.

On Sunday, 10 Forbes golfers attended the Young Men’s Open. The winner on the day shot a Scratch 70 score, but none of our Forbes guys did all that well, with the best of our boys being Steve Betland on scratch 75. Andy Dukes, Digit McAuliffe and Peter Dawson had 76 but the others quite a way back.

The Forbes Men’s Open is steadily approaching, with a 4BBB set for Saturday, 18th May and the Open on 19th May.
