Dear Fellow Forbes Citizens

March 14, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The ROTARY CLUB of FORBES has been a part of the Forbes community for over 75 years working to support charities in the community, in Australia and in many countries around the world.

Unfortunately time is catching up with us and with the exception of a couple of younger members we all well into our 70s and beyond.

It has now reached crisis point and we are in danger of having to close this wonderful organisation in this town if we cannot Inject some younger members into our club.

We realise that you all have many commitments to family, work and of course mortgages.

All the older members are keen to hand over running of the club to younger members with new ideas and these members are more than happy to step into the background to give advice only when we are asked to and help when asked.

On Tuesday 16th of April 2024 at the Forbes Services and Memorial Club at 6.15pm we will be having an information night and would like to invite you to come along, have a couple of drinks and some nibbles with us at the cost of our existing members.

If you would like to attend we would appreciate getting an RSVP to Grahame Uphill on 0427 640 065 Email: dorso@westserv.net.au or Chris Finkel on 0429 661 358 by Friday, 12th of April 2024.

Please give this your earnest consideration, we think you will find it a most fulfilling experience.

CWA Collaboration Brings Result

March 7, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Pictured is Heather Mackinnon (chair of CWA sub-committee) and Maria Willis (representing Forbes Shire Council) admiring the CWA Centenary Seat.

The two CWA Branches in Forbes collaborated to celebrate the Centenary of NSW Country Women’s Association by providing a lasting memorial to the CWA women in the Forbes and District, they did that by purchasing a centenary garden seat. This seat is now in Victoria Park, Forbes for all of the public to use.

With the help of a Community Grant provided by the Forbes Shire Council, CWA was able to purchase a wrought iron backed seat made by the Wagga Iron Foundry. The seat features the CWA symbol and the dates 1922 and 2022 adorn the back of the seat.

“There are so many ladies from the local area who have worked tirelessly for the community so we thought this would be a timely tribute to them and a useful way to remember their commitment to rural and regional communities,” commented Heather Mackinnon, a member of the joint sub-committee working hard to see this project through to its completion.

“Forbes CWA Branch celebrate their 100 th birthday in 2026 so there is a long history of community work and advocacy here which needs be acknowledged,” said Sue Cunningham, another member of the sub-committee.

“It’s a very proud moment for CWA to be able to provide this seat for the public to

use, showing that CWA is still alive and active. That’s really important," Jan Kerr, Vice President of NSW CWA said.

‘To be able to put something in a public place that commemorates the longevity of CWA in NSW is a really great thing to have been able to do,” Jan commented.

The Forbes CWA and the Forbes Evening Branch members wish to thank Sarah Savage and the Forbes Shire Council for their assistance in making this project, in recognition of all of the local CWA work, possible.

Heritage In The Pub Event

February 29, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Noted Cultural Heritage Consultant and Museum Curator, Susan Bravery, will be in Forbes on Thursday 7th of March, to discuss writers and wool growers Paul and Hettie Wenz’ collection of books, photos and artifacts largely from their lives at Nanami Station, near Gooloogong.

Community members are invited to come along and meet with Ms Bravery, share a meal and talk about the collection at the first ever Heritage in the Pub event in Forbes.

Ms Bravery has curated collections at the National Museum and managed historic homes such as Elizabeth Farm, Elizabeth Farm House, Vaucluse House, Rouse Hill House and Farm, she is currently also a lecturer at Melbourne University. She will be in Forbes to complete a heritage assessment of the Wenz Collection, a first stage in developing a strategic overlay to create a vibrant and engaging exhibition to be a part of the Forbes Museum.

The Wenz Collection is an exciting array of books, photos and artefacts from Paul and Hettie’s lives before and while they built the Historic Nanima Homestead and may be of particular interest to High School students studying french, those interested in history and creative writing are also urged to attend.

The collection itself reveals many secrets about the intriguing couple’s lives at Nanima Station – giving insight into Hettie running the farm while Paul wrote.

Organised by the Forbes District Historical Society, Heritage in the historic Vandenberg will be held Thursday, March 7, 6.30-9.30pm. The event is free with steak and other menu options available for $15 – held in the Van Cafe. Bookings at https://www.123tix.com.au/events/42585/who-was-hettie-wenz

Parkes Que Club Needs Your Help

February 15, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Models from the wedding parade from the 2023 International Women’s Day luncheon.

International Women’s Day is fast approaching, and the Parkes Que Club is once again organising their annual luncheon. The club normally receives a grant that covers entertainment and provides tickets for two students and a teacher from Parkes High School, Parkes Christian School and Red Bend Catholic College to attend the luncheon. The club were unsuccessful with their application so are now calling on the community to help.

Parkes Que Club President, Karen Ritchie said “The International Women’s Day luncheon is run as a not-for-profit event and the $1000 grant meant that we could cover costs and keep ticket prices low.”

“We would love local businesses to help. If four businesses each donated $250 we would be able to cover our costs. We are also seeking donations for our fundraising raffle” added Karen.

This year’s luncheon local guest speakers are Tracey Hambridge BAPPSCI (Nut) NNUTDIET (Dietician) and Janna Flanagan from Elder’s Real Estate Parkes.

Entertainment from Parkes based Filipino Australian Community Choir and Adrian Day, also be tables displaying/selling products from local Women. The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better World.

The Parkes Que Club International Women’s Day Luncheon, Sunday, 10th of March, 11.45am at the Parkes Services Club. Tickets $35 + $1 booking fee from 123tix.com.au

Businesses or locals that would like to help with sponsorship or donating raffle prizes can contact Wendy Neville on 0418 469 294.

A Special Plea For Executive

February 15, 2024 by Roxane Manley

A beautiful trumpet tree adorns 111 Flint Street garden; a magnolia tree in bloom; Crepe Myrtle at 4 Grenfell Street.

Our Forbes Garden Club has been active for 70 years with Open Gardens giving members, friends and visitors so much pleasure and raising much needed funds for various charities in need. October 2023 Open Gardens raised almost $6000 for the garden owners chosen charities.

A very big thank you goes to members and non-members who have opened their gardens to host a meeting thereby inspiring others.

Sadly this is all going to come to a close shortly if some other members don’t step up to the plate to take on the Executive positions being vacated. Many of the Executive have served in these positions and worked tirelessly for a very long time and it is time now to close that era, move on and have time for themselves.

I am asking , step up, share a position if needs be just to keep the Club afloat. I know from many conversations of late that there are many who do so enjoy the monthly outing, listening to the varied speakers, gathering hints for the garden , enjoying a cuppa and in particular socialising.

To my mind it will be sad to see a closure on something that is so worthwhile with so many charities benefiting to the tune of thousands of dollars over the years.

Our Annual General meeting is scheduled for February 22nd , 2pm at the Forbes Mens shed. Please bring a mug and Flower of the month.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated. See you there. Happy Gardening.

Rally On Renewables Rollout

February 8, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud is pictured with protestors.

Farmers from around Australia gathered outside Parliament House alongside small businesses and residents of impacted communities, to warn about the inevitable rising food and energy prices under Labor’s race towards renewables.

The National Rally Against Reckless Renewables is calling for the suspension of Labor’s plans to rip up agricultural land, which will destroy farming communities and reduce the supply of food.

Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud said regional Australia was being forced to bear the brunt of inner-city ideology “Labor is pursuing a reckless 82 per cent renewables target by 2030, which is driving up costs and threatening agricultural land, regional communities and native flora and fauna,” Mr Littleproud said.

“How much agricultural land is earmarked, where is it earmarked and when will the projects be forced onto local communities? We also need to know how much these projects will cost taxpayers and what are the protection rights of property owners?

“We have time to pause, to plan and to use common sense.

For Labor to meet its targets, 40 7-megawatt wind turbines will need to be installed every month until 2030, while 22,000 five hundred-watt panels need to be installed every day, or 60 million by 2030

Forbes Garden Club Seeking New Executive

February 1, 2024 by Elvy Quirk

Good morning to all our Garden Club members and friends, Hope everyone enjoyed the Festive season and things have gotten off to a good start for 2024 with some lovely rain to help the gardens, some having suffered from the heat.

Our 70th Birthday celebration for the Forbes Garden Club was a great success last November as was our Open Gardens during October and because our Garden Club has been active for all those years it is hoped members realise what a wonderful Club we have had and hoping it can continue but we all must be prepared to do a little work.

Our Executives, many of whom have been in their roles for a considerable period of time, are unfortunately not able to continue and we are asking other members if they would step up into

Executive positions to keep the Club afloat.

Of course those wishing to take an active role can always look to the previous Executive for help and advice. You will not be alone!!

Our Annual General meeting is scheduled for Thursday 22 nd February 2024 at the Mens shed commencing at 2 pm. You will only need to bring along a mug, Flower of the month and any little gardening tips you may have would be appreciated.

Please give thought as to what you can do to help our Club stay afloat.

Members, enjoy your garden, start thinking about what you might like to plant for the spring.

Happy Gardening.

Forbes Library Storytime Returns

February 1, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Join in Birth to Kinder Rhyme Time during School Term each Friday morning at Forbes Library at 10.30am.

During Birth to Kinder Rhyme Time we read books, sing songs and play to encourage engagement with language and literacy.

We use nursery rhymes, action songs, finger plays and stories in a fun and interactive way. Sessions are lively and stimulating for both children and adults.

Rhyme Time is held during the school term for children from birth – 5 years old.

Rhyme Time is free and each session lasts approximately 40 minutes. Rhyme Time is held every Friday during school term time.

Evidence shows that reading regularly to a child from birth gives them a head start once they start school.

Reading stimulates brain development, builds confidence and communication skills, and helps create stronger resilience and adaptability as they grow and develop.

That’s why the library is passionate about their early childhood reading programs.

Rhyme Time is supported by the Forbes Birth to Kinder. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ForbesBirthtoKinder/

Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow the event to be able to run on time.

Please bring your enthusiasm, but leave your mobile phone in your bag – turned off or down. For more information, please call Forbes Library on 6852 1463.
