Police Praise Forbes for Behaviour on Australia Day

February 4, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download

The Lachlan Area Command says there was no trouble during Australia Day festivities last week, and has thanked the people of Forbes for being well behaved. Forbes celebrated Australia last Tuesday with a festival at Colin McKenzie Park in the afternoon and evening, with the junior and senior Forbes Australians of the Year announced, the Ben Hall Gift being run, as well as dragon boat rides on the river taking place and childrens rides being pre-sent.

But LAC Forbes duty officer Nick Weyland said there were no reports of negative behavior on the day. “How we gage behavior of people in town is what we call public order offences and assault, and alcohol related offences. There was nothing at all in those categories [between January 23 and 26],” Officer Weyland said.

“I can say we’re more than satisfied with the way the whole town enjoyed themselves. There was nothing adverse at all. We didn’t have any drink driving offences either.” Between January 23 and 26 the NSW Police Forces implemented operation ‘Viking’, which saw additional police deployed across the state during the Australia Day period. Officer Weyland said additional police had been deployed in both Forbes and Parkes to minimise the chances of incidents occurring. “We attributed that [good behaviour] to our high profile over Australia Day as well [as residents doing the right thing],” he said.

A huge crowd attended the Forbes Australia Day Festival, with Forbes Shire Council extremely happy with how proceedings went. They will consider running an event with a similar structure next year after further consultations with the community.

Safer Streets Programme funding: Member for Calare John Cobb says local government organisations, community groups, chambers of commerce and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations are encouraged to apply for funding under Round 2 of the Coalition Government’s Safer Streets Programme, which closes in just over 2 weeks. $29.4 million is available in individual grants to fund local crime prevention projects to boost safety and deter crime through the installation of security measures such as CCTV and better lighting. “This is an investment in security infrastructure at local crime hotspots, it aims to reduce fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience in Calare,” he said. “I encourage potential applicants to contact my office to discuss their projects eligibility and to receive all submission details.” To apply, visit: https://www.ag.gov.au/CrimeAndCorruption/CrimePrevention/Pages/ProceedsofCrimeAct.aspx. Applications close 2pm on 17 February 2016.

Funds raised for SES and RFS: Thanks to the generosity of so many Australians, over $497,000 has been raised in support of volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through Bunnings’ annual Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser BBQ, held nationally on Saturday 23rd January. New South Wales residents helped raise over $130,000 and these funds will go directly to local State Emergency Services (SES) and Rural Fire Services (RFS). Bunnings Managing Director John Gillam, said the Bunnings team was very pleased to show their support and appreciation for
the amazing work these volunteers do.

Free micro chipping day a success: Forbes Shire Council hosted its third free microchipping day last Friday and said it was a great success. Fifty dogs and cats were microchipped thanks to funding Council received through the Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program to help reunite stray pets with their owners rather than be taken to the pound. Council Ranger Andrew Hubbard said all three microchipping days were well attended.“Hopefully we will be able to continue providing this free service if more funding becomes available.”

Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM Could not be Happier with Forbes Hospital’s $40.9 million Redevelopment

February 4, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Mike Baird hospital

Work started on the project in 2012 and Mayor Miller said the opening of the new building in January was an exciting milestone for the community. “The refurbishment of Forbes Hospital has been a long time coming and we are very lucky because as much as it has been called a refurbishment, the Forbes community has a brand new hospital,” Mayor Miller said.

“The redevelopment of the ambulatory services is still underway and is expected to be completed in the coming months. “As part of the work, it was also terribly important for the community to keep the facade of the previous hospital. “I can only congratulate the architects on the way they have incorporated it into the new facility.”

Included in the $40.9 million development was a new emergency department, patient unit, birthing suites for maternity services, clinical support services including advanced medical imaging technology, an upgraded ambulatory care unit and expanded renal facilities.

Refurbishments of the ambulatory care unit and renal services are still ongoing, with completion of this expected in the coming months. The new building began use at the end of last year, but was officially opened on January 19 by Premier Mike Baird, Deputy Premier Troy Grant, Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Member for Orange Andrew Gee.

“With the hard work and dedication of not only our medical providers and doctors, but also through the support of the community, we have been able to maintain our services and have a wonderful new facility,” Mayor Miller said.
“The Councillors and I could not be happier. “We have worked very hard to attract doctors and health professionals to town through the building of the Apex Medical Centre, providing subsidised accommodation at the Jemalong Regional Education Centre and supporting Yoorana Gunya. “The number of doctors in Forbes is growing, which is the reverse trend in other rural communities, and it is because of the hardwork and dedication of everyone involved.

“Our new hospital is second to none and it was a very proud moment to be at the opening to see NSW Premier Mike Baird and Health Minister Jillian Skinner officially open the hospital along with NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Orange MP Andrew Gee.” Across the entire Lachlan Health Service, which includes the Forbes and Parkes hospitals, $113.7 million of hospital improvements funding has been spent.

Manager Liz Mitchell has overseen this New Forbes Hospital  “Our ultimate goal is to improve the health
outcomes for our patients,” she said. “We can achieve this with better integration between Parkes and Forbes hospitals using our new and improved facilities and sharing of services.”

“This includes the hospital’s Inpatient and Ambulatory Care services (Ambulatory Care includes Community Health, Physiotherapy, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services, Renal and Dental Services) and the hospital and other community health providers such as General Practitioners and non-government organisations.”

Ms Mitchell said the people of Forbes could now access the highest level of care, whereas in the past this was not always guaranteed. She added the new facilities and technology would provide an improved patient flow, and more open and brighter spaces. “Now that the new building at Forbes is complete, work has commenced on the refurbishment of our Renal and Ambulatory Care units,” she said.

“With new and improved Ambulatory Care facilities at Forbes, we hope patients will see Forbes Hospital as a place that can help them stay healthy and live well, not just a place to visit when you are sick.”

Red Bend College Set for Another Successful Year

February 4, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

_DSC0131

Red Bend Catholic College principal Br Michael Flanagan says the implementation of a number of programs this year should see his school succeed academically once again.

His school achieved great results in last year’s HSC, with 12 students picking up 22 band sixes (a mark of above 90) across 14 separate courses, while 52 students collected 150 band fives (a mark between 80 and 90) in 27 courses.

While Br Michael said the programs he would implement this year aimed at maintaining high results, he stressed the most important aspect was each student getting the best out of themselves. “Our normal goal is to offer an environment here where kids can learn, to be challenged to learn more, and each is encouraged to do their best,” he said.

“They don’t have to get extraordinary results, but they have to get results that are good for them. That’s what we want.” Programs in use at Red Bend this year include teacher educator, blocking students in ability groups, FastforWord, and the parent French course.

The blocking students in ability groups system brings students of similar ability into one class, which Br Michael said
would create extra but smaller classes for his school. He believes the blocking students in ability groups system will bring the best out of students who are excelling and those who are developing.

“We believe if we can put kids of similar ability together they’ll learn better and people can focus their education of strategies more at one group of kids rather than trying to find a middle all the time when you’ve got a big range of kids,” he said. “It’s particularly important for those who are really bright, but for those who really struggle it’s also important.”

“They can move up and down classes as well. They’re not stuck where they are forever.” The FastforWord program, based on neurological science, is computer based, and targets particular areas in students that need intense development. For the first time a teacher educator has been appointed at Red Bend College, a move Br Michael said will improve teacher performance, and as a consequence, student performance.

It’s a continual professional development if you like,” he said.

Hundreds attend first ‘All Roads Lead Back to Forbes’

Forbes Sport and Recreation Club manager Norm Cook says he was impressed by the turnout at the first ever ‘All Roads Lead Back to Forbes’ event. Around 500 people from across Australia, including Queensland, northern NSW and Tasmania, came back to their hometown of Forbes to celebrate the event held between Friday January 22 and Sunday January 24.

Mr Cook, who coordinated the event, said he hoped it would be just as big when it runs again in two years time. “It was a magnificent success. We were talking about one for next year but that probably won’t happen, it’ll probably be two years down the track.” “We had a lot of people come from the Gold Coast, as well as from the NSW coast like Coffs Harbour, Ballina and Sydney, and as far south as Batemans Bay, Albury and Wagga.”

The event was organised with the purpose of reuniting current and former Forbes residents, with Facebook being the main mode of communication to invite people to the event.

“Social media played a big part. There’s a Facebook page called ‘We come from Forbes and we’re proud of it’, so that was obviously the main thing,” he said. The three-day event involved a meet and greet on the Friday night, live entertainment and the official reunion on the Saturday night, and a BBQ brunch on the Sunday morning.

The two main bands, the ‘Echoettes’ and ‘Freight’ were a highlight on the Saturday night, with both groups playing music from the 1970s including the Bee Gees, The Shadows and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Mr Cook said the band members were reuniting on a musical level just as everyone else was reuniting on a social level.

“These bands played in Forbes pubs back in the 70s, so that was the original idea, to get all the boys back together, and all of the original members were there,” he said. Mr Cook said the auctions originally planned were not able to take place, but will be run at a later date by the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club with proceeds going to the soon-to-be established Prostate Awareness Committee, to be based in Forbes from February.

Morrison and Gunn Take Out 2016 Open Gifts

January 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes’ Darcy Morrison and Dylan Gunn have taken out the 2016 Ben Hall Gifts in the open womens and mens divisions respectively. Morrison just nudged out sister Nicole by a mere 0.17 seconds, finishing with a time of 13.74 seconds, while Gunn ran an impressive time of 11.53 seconds, 0.25 seconds ahead of runner-up Ozzie Toole.

Gunn, a former regular runner, said after his race win he may now consider getting back in to sprinting after surprising himself with how well he ran. “I used to run for the school quite a bit when I was still in high school, and I used to do Little Athletics” he said. “But I haven’t really done much running in the last year or so.”

Both athletes took home $600 prize money, with runners-up taking $200. Forbes Shire Council says it hopes to increase money for the Gift in the years to come. Gunn said with his win coming on Australia Day, he was very grateful to have made his achievement on such a significant occasion. “It’s great seeing everyone come around [to watch]. In the past I’ve competed up in Sydney where there’s no one you know,” he said.

“It’s good on Australia Day. Everyone’s down amongst it, and it’s great for the community.” The other divisions that ran in the Gift on Australia Day were under 10s boys, 10-14 boys, junior girls, junior rugby league 14s, junior rugby league 16s, celebrity, rugby union v rugby league, 15-17 years girls and 15-17 years boys.

In respective order the winners were Jonah Little, Coby Ryan, Annie O’Connor, Coby Ryan, Charlie Staines, Scott Toole, Ozzie Toole, Nicole Morrison, and Ozzie Toole again.

Molloy and Ashcroft Named Forbes Citizens of the Year

January 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

It’s fair to say that long time Forbes resident Paddy Molly has been around the traps and put in the hard yards for the community. From riding and training horses and competing in rodeos in his younger years, to working as a butcher and at the Forbes Abattoirs, to building Forbes’ first rodeo bucking chutes and helping establish the first Forbes rodeo, Mr Molloy is certainly worthy of honour.

And on Tuesday evening at the Forbes Australia Day Festival at Colin McKenzie Park, he received the honour of being named the Forbes Senior Citizen of the Year. After many accidents including broken bones, losing his late wife Una in 2007 and suffering burns from a farming accident in 2012, the 89-year old was forced to sell his Wandary Lane farm and move to a home in Bathurst Street, where he still spends tire-less hours gardening and renovating his homes.

He regularly brings the bins in for his neighbours who work, and along with musical partner Ray Lassierre, plays country music at the Jemalong Residential Village and the Mater Nursing Home. They have played at both now for 37 years. “I’m grateful for this. It’s like winning the lottery,” Mr Molloy said of his award win.

Mr Molloy said tongue in cheek he did not plan on attending the Australia Day Festival, but was glad he did in winning his award. “I got brought over by my son and his wife, so I’m glad I came,” he said. Sixteen-year old Daniel Ashcroft won the 2016 Forbes Junior Citizen of the Year. He is a volunteer for the Forbes Shire Council Youth Advisory Committee, established Spectacular Screenings at age 12, and donates toys to Havannah House for their annual Christmas lunch.

In setting up and helping to run Spectacular Screening, where a movie for public viewing is put on once per month, he has contributed a massive 230 hours of his time over the last four and a half years. Mr Ashcroft also marches for Forbes High School in the ANZAC Day march, and volunteers as a musician at Jemalong Retirement Village.
He said he is proud of what he does and will continue his work. “It’s good to help out in the community and it’s good to see people’s faces when you’re doing it,” he said.

“I plan on continuing the volunteering. I’m not too sure what I’d like to do after I finish school in a couple years, but I’d like to go to university.” “I’m a black belt in martial arts, so something may come from that too.”

Salsa classes begin! Forty degree heat did not deter enthusiastic locals from coming along to try their hand at Salsa a Rhumba dancing recently. Local lady, Rachel Wythes, planted the seed following her entertaining performance with partner Barry Merritt at the very successful fundraiser, Forbes Dancing with the Stars, last year. Classes are available for singles or couples and will run for a period of eight weeks. The singles class runs from 6.30pm-7.30pm on a Tuesday evening at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre and cater to individuals of all ages and fitness levels. The couples class commences at the conclusion of the first class and caters to people who like to dance with a partner.

Town pool alive with learn to swim: Forbes Town Pool Manager, Maree Rhier, is very happy with attendance figures for the pool this season and with temperatures having soared in excess of 40 degrees and Learn to Swim classes running, these figures will only get better. The Sport and Recreation Learn to Swim nine day program began two weeks ago and enrolments have been excellent. Four instructors are running half hour sessions from 9.00am till 2.00pm each day with numbers ranging between five and eight students per class. The program caters for children
aged 18months and over and covers water confidence, safety and stroke development.

Services Club cinema a huge success: The opening date of the Micro Cinema was Boxing Day 2015 featuring Daddy’s Home, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Bridge of Spies, and other great blockbuster titles are to follow including Alvin & The Chipmunks “Road Chip” screening from Thursday 14th February 2016. The micro cinema will be a valuable asset to the Forbes and surrounding districts providing an entertainment offering that currently requires movie goers to travel to Orange or Dubbo to catch the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

Police appeal to motorcyclists to slow down: Police are urging motorcyclists to adhere to the speed limit and drive to the conditions with three riders dying on the state’s roads since the beginning of the year. “With weather conditions changing on almost a daily basis, from wet and rainy to extremely hot, the impact on the roads is significant, and we’re urging all riders to slow down and drive to the conditions,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said.

Forbes and District Historical Society named a finalist for the Cultural Heritage Award for their Centenary of ANZAC Display. We wish them luck in taking out this award. If you are interested in becoming a member you can call into the Museum in Cross Street between 2pm-4pm daily or phone 68516600 during office hours.

‘I Luv Local’ app to be launched: I luv local is an exciting new app being launched in Forbes on the 24th of February at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. The app is a new way to reach clients through technology with promotional and product material created by you. To find out more information please call into the Forbes Phoenix office or stay tuned.

Forbes Mayor Happy with New AUS Day Format

January 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

PhyllisAUSDay

Forbes Shire Council Mayor Phyllis Miller says was “really excited” by the attendance at the Forbes Australia Day Festival on Tuesday. The Council experimented with a new celebration format this year, moving away from the traditional parade through the town centre to having a festival at Colin McKenzie Park.

The Festival had food and drink stalls, live entertainment on the main stage, display vehicles from the local fire brigade and State Emergency Service units, and kids rides. There was also dragon boat racing and the Ben Hall Gift foot races. The official presentation ceremony of the junior and senior Forbes Citizen of the Year awards
took place on the main stage. Cr Miller said she was impressed with the number of people that attended the festival. “It’s a new format and I’m really excited about the crowd that we had on the day,” she said.

“Having a foot race is a new event for Australia Day, and I think there’s a great opportunity to build on that and build the prize money so we will get people here that want to participate.” Cr Miller said the idea of changing this year’s Australia Day format was to have an environment where families could gather together.

“It’s about trying to create a family day where families come together and celebrate together for Australia Day, and I suppose really enjoy the community in which they live” she said. While Cr Miller said there would always be an Australia Day event in Forbes, the format of next year’s festivities would still be up for consultation.

“I will wait until we get feedback and not be presumptuous and decide ‘yes, we are doing this again’. We’ll wait until we get feedback from the community,” she said.
