Forbes Town Hall To Host Morning Of Music

July 30, 2026 by Roxane Manley

By popular request, following last year’s successful concert, Maz Rees and Grant Barton will again be holding “A Morning of Music”, when the unique sounds of the pipe organ and electronic organ come together in one concert.

This year’s event is being held in conjunction with the Galari River Arts Festival, with proceeds going to Forbes CanAssist.

Maz and Grant will take you on a musical journey from classical to rock in a casual and relaxed atmosphere – the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

Maz has a degree in music composition, while Grant has studied in Japan, competing in the Yamaha Electone Festival and has a passion for electronic organ music.

The pipe organ, which is housed at the Town Hall, was commissioned and built for the late Paul Coles and hosted concerts upstairs in his Forbes Builders’ shed for years.

Paul kindly donated the organ to Forbes Shire Council several years ago.

The doors of the Town Hall open at 10am on Sunday 9 August, with the concert to start at 10.30am. Entry fee is a donation to CanAssist. Morning tea will also be available.

Win For Bogan Gate Branch At NSW Farmers Annual Conference

July 30, 2026 by Gavin Tom

Pictured are members voting on a motion at last year’s NSW Farmers Association Annual Conference.

The Bogan Gate Branch, NSW Farmers Association, presented one of the first motions to be voted on at the Annual Conference at Rosehill Tuesday 21 July.

The Motion, which was moved by Ron Umbers, asked for NSW Farmers to advocate for amendments to the Veterinary Practice Act 2003 (NSW) to allow registered Veterinary Practitioners to conduct Telehealth consultations. This including for S4 drug compliance and prescribing, where initial check has occurred and a bona fide Veterinary – Client – patient relationship has been established, subject to existing professional, animal welfare and regulatory safeguards.

As it currently stands, a farmer must transport a lamb, or representative animal of their commercial operation, to a Vet surgery to prove they are a person involved with commercial animal operations. This requirement must be repeated every year even if the Vet has a long-term business relationship with the farmer and they are fully aware of their commercial animal production status. The process is cumbersome, time consuming and very stressful for the animal (and farmer) involved.

Bogan Gate branch’s Policy submission aims to streamline the process while still maintaining security with regards to the necessary veterinary products that farmers need to use in their operations.

The vote sailed through to become NSW Farmers Policy which will now be followed up by the advocacy team, who will approach the relevant authorities to achieve this resolution.

Gavin Tom, Region 5 Executive Councillor said, “This is a great example of how NSW Farmers can improve on modern farm practice which can involve plenty of red tape.

“As Region 5 Executive Councilor I was very pleased to vote for this, along with the vast majority of delegates.

“Being a member of NSW Farmers can give you a say in forming and improving policy, whether it be state, federal or local government along with the many other organisations we have to deal with on a daily basis.

Vashti Williams Aims To Throw Javelin At Olympic Level

July 30, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Pictured is Vashti Williams competing at the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth.

Fourteen year old Vashti Williams from Trundle is a rising star in the sport of Javelin. Vashti has been throwing the javelin since before she could even walk through the school gates, spending her afternoons learning and training alongside her three older siblings.

Although athletics and sports has been a part of Vashti’s life from such a young age, it wasn’t until she was thirteen that she actually started to see herself as a good javelin thrower.

“At around thirteen, everything changed; those childhood goals suddenly shifted into reality. By the time I was at an age to compete in javelin, I already had over seven years of training, understanding rules and techniques of the sport.

“Parkes Little Athletics opened up totally new opportunities and competitions that I was able to compete at and work my way from the bottom of my age group when I began, to now being one of the top throwers in my age group at competitions,” said Vashti.

Vashti has recently competed at some major competitions, representing NSW on the national stage in April and then competing at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, representing Australia where she won a Bronze Medal in the Women’s U16 Javelin.

“I honestly never thought I would see myself throwing a javelin at places like Perth, Brisbane and definitely not Darwin! My debut on the National stage in Perth last year (2025) was the hardest experience out of the three. Being my first National competition, I didn’t know what to expect.”

After throwing over a 2m pb, Vashti was proud to come home with a bronze medal.

When competing at Nationals in Brisbane this year Vashti said, “I did what I could on that day and reflected on what I could have done to change my outcome and then put that into practice preparing for Darwin, where I received a bronze medal.”

“The Oceania Championships were by far my favourite competition to this day. Just the atmosphere and the encouragement from everyone around in all the events was such a great feeling,” said Vashti.

At every competition Vashti sets herself a standard that she tries to meet, it is never to beat someone else, it is only to better herself.

“My long-term goal will always be to represent Australia at the Olympics. My future goal for this year is to consistently be throwing over 40 metres and continue to better myself in all areas of my throwing technique and to keep positive.”

Most weeks Vashti trains after school on four days at a local oval and participates in weekend sports. Coming up in September Vashti hopes to compete in the CHS State competition, followed by All Schools at the end of September. Little Athletics will then begin and most weekends of November she will have an athletics carnival, which will prepare her for the Country Championships, Little Athletics Regionals/State and then shortly after the Nationals.

Vashti pictured at age 7 (throwing 15m) and at age 14 (throwing 38/39m) demonstrating a passion for athletics from an early age.

Good Fun In Short Course Event

July 30, 2026 by Short Putt

Inaugural Short Course Champion – Caleb Hanrahan.

On Saturday 25 July, 79 Forbes and visiting golfers had a different perspective on how to play some holes when the inaugural Short Course event was played.

The clubbing changed from their normal approach and the greens were quite slick, leading some interesting results.

The Winner of the Inaugural Short Course Championship was Caleb Hanrahan with 71 Scratch. Runner-up was Cam McMillan with 72 Scratch.

In the Handicap format the Div-1 Winner Alf Davies with 73 nett. He needed to warm up on the front-9 before putting a very good back-9 together. Runner-up was Scott Kirkman who missed out on count back. He had a better scratch score but had fewer handicap shots to play with.

The Div-2 Winner was Glenn Kitson with 71 nett. He played a steady game but did not make best use of the shorter holes.

Runner-up was Mat Duff with 73 nett. He also played steadily and did make good use of the shorter holes.

The ball sweep went to 78 nett on count back. NTPs went to: 9th Peter Dawson, 18th Wayne O’Niell with only Pete converting for 2’s. The Super Pin went to Brad Ashton (180 cm) who also converted for his ‘2’.

The comp on Saturday 1 August is the Monthly Medal sponsored by Bernardis Marketplace. There will be the usual Stableford Medley on Sunday but of better interest is the Trundle Open.

Keen to support other local clubs? Great event for keen mixed golfers at Condobolin Golf Club on the 9 August or to Cowra Golf Club on the 8-9 August. Information on how to enter https://www.facebook.comforbesgolfcourse

From Phil Donato MP

July 30, 2026 by Roxane Manley

For several years, I have been raising concerns about whether theMental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT) is giving sufficient weight to community safety and the concerns of victims when making decisions about forensic mental health patients.

The recent reported death of 74-year-old Quang My Pham in Western Sydney has reinforced why these concerns deserve serious attention. While the circumstances are still subject to investigation, I have written to the Minister for Mental Health requesting an urgent review into reports that the alleged offender was a recently released forensic mental health patient.

This is not about opposing rehabilitation. It’s about ensuring there is an appropriate balance between rehabilitation, victim welfare and community safety.

For years, victims and families have shared their experiences with me, describing a system where they feel their concerns are heard but not always meaningfully considered.

One such case is that of Wendy Robinson, who has spent years attending MHRT hearings to advocate for her family’s safety following the murder of her parents by a family member found not guilty by reason of mental illness. After years of lobbying, I am pleased that the NSW Parliament’s Law and Safety Committee has now agreed to conduct an inquiry into the MHRT following my formal request earlier this year.

The inquiry will examine whether the current system adequately protects victims and communities, provides sufficient transparency and accountability, and strikes the right balance between patient rehabilitation and public safety. I will continue advocating for stronger oversight, greater transparency and reforms that ensure victims’ voices are genuinely considered indecisions that may affect public safety.

Our communities deserve confidence that appropriate safeguards are in place, and victims deserve confidence that their safety remains a central consideration in every decision.

Cheers, Phil

Targeting Speed In Peak Hill

July 23, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Pictured is a Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor with the new speed monitor trailer in Peak Hill.

Parkes Shire Council has installed a speed monitor trailer in Caswell Street in Peak Hill to help prompt drivers to watch their speed and keep to the limit.

The speed monitor trailer contains a radar device to check the speed of passing traffic and research shows that they have a large impact in not just reducing the speed at which people travel but also increasing the driver’s awareness of their vehicle’s travel speed.

Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, assures drivers that the speed checks are a courtesy only and emphasised the importance of the speed monitor trailer in reminding drivers of the posted speed limit and prompting them to adjust their speed if necessary.

“We want motorists to realise that their speeding is part of a much bigger problem.

Every vehicle travelling over the posted speed limit poses a risk to other road users – especially the vulnerable such as child and aged pedestrians.

“Research indicates that reducing speed, even by just a few kilometres, makes a big difference to the outcome of crashes. If hit by a vehicle travelling at 60 km/h a pedestrian has a 15% chance of survival, this increases to 55% if the vehicle is travelling at the slower speed of 50km/h and 80% if the vehicle is travelling at 40km/h.

The speed monitor trailers will be in use for the next month in conjunction with regular Police enforcement.

Mayoral Notes

July 23, 2026 by Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM

Connecting with our community is one of the most important parts of local government, and our upcoming Councillor CatchUp is a great opportunity to do just that.

Join us at Bedgerabong Hall on Friday 24 July from 5pm for an informal chat with your elected Councillors and our new General Manager. Getting to speak directly to our community helps us stay connected and ensures local perspectives remain at the heart of our decision-making.

We are partnering with Central West Lachan Landcare for a Community Planting Day at Forbes Cemetery from 10am to 12pm as part of National Tree Day. I encourage locals to join us this Saturday 25 July to help plant Yellow Box, White Box and Spiny Bursaria – all native species. Just bring a hat and water bottle, with gloves and planting materials supplied on the day. A free BBQ lunch will be provided afterwards as a thank you.

Next week we will celebrate NAIDOC 2026 at the Forbes Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre. Originally planned for earlier this month, the event was postponed due to

wet weather. So we’re pleased to be able to celebrate together next Thursday 30 July instead. Gather at the South Circle from 9.45am for the Community March, which will make its way to the Forbes Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre for a morning of celebration, connection and cultural pride.

Council will be out at Goldridge Estate this week planting perimeter trees at the new park, helping shape the future look and feel of this growing community space.

We’re grateful to have three tree-planting specialists from Skillset’s Land Works team assisting with the project. The trees being planted include Acer ‘Crimson Sentry’ and Fraxinus ‘Cimzam’, selected to provide shade, character and structure to the park as it matures. While the benefits won’t be seen overnight, these plantings are an investment in the future, ensuring residents can enjoy a greener, more welcoming park for years to come. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now.

God Bless
Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM
