Low Handicappers Show Talent

April 9, 2026 by By Short Putt

With conditions making the golf comfortable a number of golfers recorded good scores. Most notable among them were the low handicappers. The field of 46 players who contested the Individual Par event, sponsored by the Forbes Tuesday Golfers, was down on previous weeks as a result of Easter coinciding with the school holidays.

But the quality in play was still there.

The Div-1 Winner was Steve Betland with 3-under. His Scratch score of 67 began with a bogey on the 1 st hole but thereafter it was sub-par golf all the way. The Div-1 Runner-up was Peter Dawson who finished on 2-under. He started smartly to turn better than Steve B but a couple of bogeys on the back-9 cost him.

The Div-2 Winner was Lenny Iyer with 5-under. He faltered on the 2 nd and 15th holes but otherwise used his handicap very well. The Div-2 Runner-up was Paul Pymont. He was comfortable as the clubhouse leader early in the day and was pleased with the way he played the back9. But Lenny from the last group stole his thunder.

The ball sweep went to 2-under on count back. NTPs went to: 9th Paul Pymont, 18th Pat Murphy. Paul made the ‘2’ but Pat missed his. The Super Pin went to Steve Betland (84 cm) which he easily converted.

The comp on Saturday 11 is the April Monthly Medal, sponsored by the ‘Roadies’ boys. Sunday has a Stableford Medley.

Five Days Of Double Demerits For Easter Long Weekend

April 2, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Over the next five days, double demerit points will apply for all speeding, seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences.

Double demerit points will apply on NSW roads until Monday 6 April 2026 as Police encourage road users to look out for each other over the Easter break.

Parkes Highway Patrol Sergeant Mitchell Gage has indicated that Police in the area will also be targeting other high-risk behaviour including drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.

“We are expecting roads to be busy with people travelling across NSW for the long weekend. Our message is to be patient, obey the road rules and drive to conditions.

We want everyone to reach their destination safely and to enjoy the Easter break withouttragedy.

“I ask all drivers to play their part in reducing crashes and risks. Remember to slow down, schedule plenty of breaks, limit distractions in the car, don’t mix alcohol or drugs with driving and ensure you and all your passengers are wearing seatbelts,” Sergeant Gage said.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says that Police enforcement figures show that double demerit point periods do deter motorists from speeding and illegally using their mobile phone, while reminding them to wear their seatbelt/helmet.

“Drivers are reminded that mobile phone detection cameras will be active over the Easter break to catch people illegally using their phone whilst driving. Drivers will accrue 10 demerit points for all licence classes during the double demerit long weekend as well as receive a fine,” Ms Suitor said.

Mayoral Notes

April 2, 2026 by Roxane Manley

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Forbes and District Historical Society, a wonderful milestone for our community.

Congratulations to all members and volunteers on four decades of preserving and sharing our local history.

The Society’s dedication ensures Forbes’ stories, heritage and identity are protected and celebrated for future generations.

Their passion and commitment behind the scenes have made an enduring contribution to our town.

As we approach the busy Easter long weekend, Council is encouraging residents and visitors to plan ahead and take extra care on our roads. With the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass currently closed due to structural defects, locals travelling to Sydney are urged to use the Hume Highway. Bells Line of Road should be avoided unless travelling north, as traffic volumes are expected to be significantly higher.

With increased travel across the state, NSW Police will be conducting double demerit points enforcement from Thursday 2 April until Monday 6 April 2026 (inclusive). Council reminds all drivers to slow down,

buckle up and stay alert, particularly on unfamiliar roads.

The Lions Club will once again be operating the Driver Reviver site in Victoria Park from 3 to 6 April, helping keep motorists safe by encouraging regular breaks on long journeys. Council extends sincere thanks to the amazing volunteers for their dedication and service during the upcoming busy travel period.

Council’s Administration Office will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Essential services will continue over the long weekend. The Forbes Visitor Information Centre will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, but will be open on Saturday and Monday.

The Forbes Recycling and Waste Depot will be closed on Good Friday only. Importantly, there will be no changes to kerbside waste collection, with all services running as scheduled.

I wish everyone a safe and happy Easter and hope you enjoy the long weekend with family and friends.

God Bless
Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM

Mrs Tandy joined in – fitting in a few fun runs down the mountain herself. A big shout out to the parents who went along and helped throughout the week, making the trip possible.

Smart Flood Warning System Installed At Pinnacle Road Floodway

April 2, 2026 by Roxane Manley

A new flooded road smart warning system at the Pinnacle Road floodway is set to improve safety and enhance Council’s ability to respond quickly during flood events.

The new system uses a water level sensor installed at the floodway to automatically detect rising floodwaters. In the instance of a flood event, the sensor will trigger a digital “Road Closed” sign at the floodway and a “Road Closed Ahead” warning sign at the start of Pinnacle Road, providing an immediate and highly visible warning to motorists.

The sensor sends an automated SMS alert to Council staff when flooding occurs, prompting the installation of physical road closed signs and enabling a faster, more coordinated response.

Pinnacle Road was identified as a high‐risk location due to its history of flood‐related rescues. By clearly warning road users and triggering rapid responses, the system will help prevent people from driving into floodwaters and is expected to reduce the number of flood‐related rescue incidents.

The system automatically reports flood conditions to Council, including water depth and duration, allowing for faster and more informed decision‐making. Council staff will be able to update road closures through Transport for NSW’s OneRoad platform, ensuring information is published in real time to Live Traffic NSW and Google Maps.

If the Pinnacle Road project proves successful, Council will investigate installing similar smart warning systems at other flood and rescue‐prone locations.

The project has been co‐funded by Forbes Shire Council and the NSW Government through the NSW Reconstruction Authority’s Disaster Ready Fund – Round 2. For more information, visit www.forbes.nsw.gov.au

Healthy Harold’s Colour Run Returns To Parkes

April 2, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Pictured with Healthy Harold is the Chair of Life Ed NSW, Ken Keith OAM.

Parkes is set to come alive with colour as the Healthy Harold Colour Run returns, with local community groups, sporting clubs, health services and businesses invited to get involved.

Stallholder expressions of interest are open for the free, family-friendly event, taking place on Wednesday 20th May 2026 from 3.30pm to 5.00pm at Keast Park, Hooley Street, Parkes.

The Colour Run forms part of the Healthy Harold Parkes Festival of Health, a twoweek initiative promoting positive health and wellbeing across the region.

“We know Parkes has an incredible network of community organisations and health services,” said Ken Keith OAM, Chair of Life Ed NSW and former Mayor of Parkes. “The Colour Run is a great opportunity for local groups to connect with families, showcase their services, and be part of a fun event that celebrates community pride.”

The festival coincides with visits from Life Ed NSW’s specialist health educators, with more than 1,500 local children taking part in the Life Ed program at their school or early learning centre, exploring topics including nutrition, cybersafety, respectful relationships and drug and alcohol education.

The Colour Run has previously attracted hundreds of locals who walked, ran and danced through clouds of colourful powder while exploring interactive stalls hosted by community organisations. These stalls sparked conversations about health and wellbeing, while families discovered local services and support programs.

“Events like the Colour Run highlight the strength of community partnerships,” Terese Hooper, CEO of Life Ed NSW said.

“When local organisations come togeth

er, we create meaningful opportunities to support the health and wellbeing of families across Parkes.”

Local organisations interested in hosting a stall, activity or interactive display are encouraged to get involved. To express interest or find out more, visit https://go.lifeed.org.au/FOH2026 or email nsw@lifeed.org.au

Lockie And Jack Competing In The 2026 Young Auctioneers’ Competition

April 2, 2026 by Roxane Manley

KMWL Stock and Station Agents Jack Whitty and Lockie Miller.

Jack Whitty and Lockie Miller are both representing KMWL in the 2026 NSW Young Auctioneers Competition State & National Finals, taking place today, Thursday 2 April at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Nominations for competitors are open to all young aspiring auctioneers (25 years of age or under) employed full time by an Australian Livestock & Property Agents Association (ALPA) member in the agency industry. The NSW Selection School is conducted by ALPA every December to decide on the 10 NSW State Finalists to compete at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Jack Whitty and Lockie Miller each work as livestock agents for KMWL and both were chosen as 2026 finalists. Jack Whitty works in the Grenfell and Gooloogong area and Lockie Miller works in the Parkes area.

Jack’s dad Luke was a former winner of the competition and Jack said, “Winning would obviously be great, but the real value is in the experience. You’re refining your skills, receiving feedback, and learning from some of the best in the business.”

“I’ve competed within the top 10 twice before, so I’ve got a feel for the pace—but every year is different. The biggest benefit is the exposure and the experience. You’re networking with industry experts and gaining some extremely beneficial contacts for marketing livestock on a weekly basis.”

Lockie was selected to represent Kevin Miller Whitty Lennon and Co. in last year’s prestigious 2025 ALPA NSW Young Auctioneer Competition.

Lockie started out doing work experience alongside his grandfather, Kevin Miller at KMWL when he was just 15, and started working fulltime at the age of 17.

Lockie said “I’ve been in the industry for five years now fulltime. My favorite part of the job is interacting with clients and doing auctioneering in the sale yards.”

You can catch all of the action on the livestream at www.theland.com.au.
