Bedgerabong Tickets Going Fast For First Picnic In 100 Days

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

RACE READY: People from across the state are anticipated for the first picnic race meeting in over 100 days when the annual Bedgerabong Picnic Races take place on February 12. Despite new COVID rules, the event shapes as a huge day with tickets selling fast. INSET: The day will feature a range of promotions and entertainment for the family including the highly popular fashions in the field.

The countdown is on until the Bedgerabong Picnic Races on February 12 and the buzz is starting to build after 100 days between picnic race days.

In NSW, the most recent picnic meeting was held on October 9, with Albury hosting a six-race pop-up meeting, while the Picnic Champion Series final, held at Coonamble on October 10, was the most recent picnic race held in NSW. In racing terms, it’s been the length of the straight and many are keen to get back to the track if not just for the social interaction at least.

Picnic meetings were meant to be held at Harden on October 23, Bong Bong on November 19 and Trangie on December 19, but the three meetings were abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bedgerabong is the next meeting on the Racing NSW calendar, with the February 12 meeting the start of what is a good stretch of picnic meetings, but it doesn’t change the fact that picnic troops will have gone more than four months without a race ride.

This year, it is hoped that the disruptions are a thing of the past with strict COVID protocols to protect all race goers in place for the first event of the 2022 calendar. It will also be the first event at Bedgerabong Racecourse in months with other events such as Australia’s Biggest Bogan Festival cancelled late last year due to the pandemic.

The day promises to be a cracking event with fashions in the field, TAB and plenty of things to do for the family. It will also be a welcome return for many who haven’t worked since the last picnic race meetings in early October.

With tickets selling fast, picnickers are encouraged to pre-purchase early to avoid disappointment. Go to: www.123tix.com.au/events/24230/bedgerabong-picnic-races

Back To School Safety Reminder

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

FOLLOW TRAFFIC SIGNS: Drivers are asked to be more alert and patient from next week when school returns in the Forbes Shire. Parents, carers and school staff are also reminded to reinforce road and safety rules with children.

The new school year is set to resume for thousands of local students next week and Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Councils are reminding local drivers and parents about children’s safety around schools.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that road crashes account for over half of all accidental deaths among children aged 5 – 14 years old.

“Children are vulnerable road users because of their size and their inability to judge speed and distance,” said Ms Suitor.

“Drivers are reminded to slow down, pay extra attention and be patient when school resumes.”

There are 40km/h school speed zones around all schools in NSW. Most school zones are operational between 8am – 9.30am and 2.30pm – 4pm on school days, when the lights are flashing.

Police will be targeting school zones when school returns.

Parents and carers should:

• Always make sure your children wear a seatbelt or use a child restraint when travelling in a car. Child restraint laws require children up to seven years old to be restrained in an approved child restraint. For more information visit www. childcarseats.com.au

• Where possible, drop-off and pick-up your children on the school side of the road.

• Make sure children use the footpath-side door when getting in and out of a car -this is called the ‘safety door’.

• Use a pedestrian crossing where possible and avoid being distracted whilst walking.

• Children aged up to 10 years old should always be supervised when near traffic.

• Children aged up to eight years old should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road or walking near traffic.

• Make sure your children always wear a helmet when riding a bike.

• If your children catch a bus, always walk with them to the bus stop.

Jungle Deuce Wins Paws Of Thunder In Epic Battle

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

PAWS OF THUNDER WINNER: Raymond Smith of Irinka Kennels with Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder winner Jungle Deuce.

Jungle Deuce has bounced back superbly from the Phoenix TAB run on December 18 having qualified and then won the non-graded Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder Race 8 over 520 metres at Wentworth Park last Saturday night. For Forbes trainer and Irinka Kennels operator Raymond Smith, it is a continuation of some sensational form from his chargers with even Irinka Riley making the final of the event.

Yet despite having two chances in the main event, it was Jungle Deuce from the four box who all eyes were on as the classy tracker continued her recent rivalry with Wow, Do It and Bandit Ned. It was Wow in the five though that had all the early running having opened a decent lead after the second section.

Though as Jungle Deuce has done so often, the dark-haired superstar found a spark and quickly made up the ground on the pre-race $2.80 favourite to draw level as they approached the straight.

With the Michael Hardman trained Chase Me Honey also in the mix in third, it was a match race between the two pre-race fancies as they hit the post with Jungle Deuce holding out by three-quarters of a length in 29.52 – only four-tenths faster than Wow with Chase Me Honey nearly two lengths back in third. Irinka Riley came in eighth in a brave showing against quality opposition.

For Smith and Irinka Kennels connections though, it is another great win among a line of plenty from his entourage that includes Miss Ezmae and Midnight Flash –both of whom have also had recent success. 2022 is shaping up to be a good onetoo!

Be Alert, Not Alarmed

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

MOZZIES ABOUT: Forbes Shire Council is asking residents to take care after Ross River Virus was discovered in their flock of sentinel chickens. There is no cure for Ross River Virus and people are asked to remain alert and take precautions.

Residents are being asked to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes in these incredibly wet times the region is experiencing.

“Our team has been spraying our public spaces, including sporting fields, ovals and the lake foreshore, with a targeted insecticide to try and keep numbers at bay,” said Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller.

“Our flock of sentinel chickens and mosquito traps have detected Ross River Virus (RRV) and we would like to alert the community to do what they can to protect themselves when outside over the coming months,” said Miller.

“The only way to prevent being infected with a disease such as Ross River is to avoid being bitten in the first place. There is no vaccine or special treatment to prevent catching the disease and it affects people in different ways.”

Symptoms can last for weeks to months, and include painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches.

“If you are concerned about some of these symptoms we encourage you to visit a local GP and they will conduct a blood test to advise you if you have contracted RRV,” said Mayor Miller.

Prevent mosquito bites with the following precautions:

• Reduce activity outdoors during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are more likely to bite;

• Cover up with long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing when outdoors;

• Repel by applying an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label Instructions;

• Use insecticide sprays, vapour dispensing units (indoors) and mosquito coi (outdoors) to clear rooms or repel mosquitoes from an area;

• Screen all household doors and windows;

• Remove potential breeding grounds around your home. These include any water-holding containers including blocked gutters and rainwater tank overflow pipes, and washout birdbaths and ornamental pools weekly.

It promises to be a great end to the swim season and hopefully with no more disruptions.

New League Season Will Be Special

The new merged competitions this year promise to create a lot of interest in country rugby league. Whereas previously we would never see Forbes v Bathurst or Orange outside a pre-season trial, we now get a chance to see where the real strength in the region lies. It should make for a cracking season and already Forbes players are training hard after two years of disruptions.

Mayoral Notes

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Happy New Year to you all. I know we are almost into the second month but as this is my first column for the year I wanted to wish you all the very best for what I hope will be a great year. I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors to bring out the best in this great Shire we live in.

The year has started however with many cases of COVID-19 in our community and as our politicians have stated it is a virus we have to learn to live with. I encourage those who are eligible to get booster shots.

The Shire is in for a busy year in the sense of the projects we have on the board to complete. Goldridge Estate is progressing very well and Stage Two is now on the market. Works continue at the old Lachlan Vintage Village to turn this space into our new Tourist Information Centre and Café.

The Lake Forbes Activation Plan beautification work will also continue this year with the turning of the old Ambulance Centre into a world-class art gallery about to begin very soon.

Our industrial land is set to expand with the development of more sites at Central West Industrial Park. As our industrial site and Landrace is nearly at capacity proving business is growing here in Forbes, and we need to provide the land for it to do so.

Take care and God Bless.

Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

Flagship Properties Sold

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Glenorie and Dorset – two highly versatile and complimentary, mixed irrigation farms located in the heart of the Lachlan Valley are officially sold. Johnston Rural Group recently announced the successful sale and settlement of the Jemalong properties.

Comprising a combined total of 495.7* hectares (1,224* acres) of productive farming and grazing country, the sale also included 1,250 MgL of ground and surface water. Located on the western side of the Jemalong Range, the holdings are ideally situated 29 kilometres west of the historic township of Forbes and just 21 km from the Newell Highway. The non-contiguous properties were sold ‘as a whole’ as the result of a successful Expressions of Interest campaign that concluded in late September.

Forbes based rural property specialists Johnston Rural Group handled the sale with licensee in charge Gary Johnston stating that “the properties generated a significant level of interest for the Forbes area with enquiries coming from local operators, graziers from western and southern parts of the state, city-based investors and corporates.”

Whilst the sale price remains confidential, Gary advises the properties were transacted prior to Christmas, and bought by the Le Lievre Family (Yathonga Station) from Louth in North-Western NSW.

COVID-Smart Plan To Open Schools Safely in 2022

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

COVID-SMART SCHOOL MEASURES: NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet along with NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell, announced new COVID-Smart safety measures for the new school year.

Students will return to school under COVID-smart settings that will minimise the risk of the virus and allow teachers and pupils to return safely to the classroom.

As part of the new measures, every student and teacher in NSW government and non-government schools will be able to receive rapid antigen test (RAT) kits before school returns on February 1st.

The COVID-Smart Plan includes:

• Twice a week surveillance testing for primary and high school students, school staff and early childhood staff. Surveillance testing will be undertaken for the first four weeks of term, with two weeks of supply distributed before term starts;

• Mandatory mask wearing for all staff and high school students, with masks encouraged for children in primary schools;

• Limiting interaction between year groups;

• Limiting visitors to those providing essential curriculum and wellbeing support;

• COVID-safe settings in place for music, sport and excursions;

• Maximising natural and mechanical ventilation, with air purifiers dispatched to where they are needed;

• Contingency plans in place to manage any disruptions to the workforce.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said supporting students to return safely to the classroom is vital.

“Some 12 million RATs will go to over 3,150 government, non-government schools and early childhood centres to assist with surveillance testing of staff and students,” he said.

“Families will be notified by their schools on how and when to collect the RAT kits for their children.”

In the 12 to 15-year-old age group, more than 80 per cent of children have had their

first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 78 per cent are double-dosed. In the 5 to 11-year-old age group, more than 24 per cent of children have had their first dose.

More information on the return to school settings for NSW public schools is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families

RISING SUN: Melbourne based artist Damian Vick has created this outstanding Rising Sun for Club Forbes. It is Vick’s third display in the Forbes Shire with two other works as part of the sculpture trail.

New Sculpture Design At Club Forbes

The Damian Vick steel sculpture of the Rising Sun now takes pride and place on the Templar Street wall of Club Forbes.

The Rising Sun is a dynamic piece that is as versatile as it is dramatic. Having been designed and built in two halves allows it to be used in three distinct ways: hung flat on a wall, used as a divider for a space, or positioned in a corner. This particular screen was donated to the Club Forbes to commemorate the centenary of the first world war.

Vick, a Melbourne-based artist, has three sculptures in Forbes including The Hunter located at the Gum Swamp Bird Hide on the Newell Highway, The Heart of Country located 80km from Forbes on the Condobolin Road and the Rising Sun.
