Rural Ambassador Information Afternoon

The call out is for entrants between 18 and 29 years of age with a passion for rural and regional Australia.

The Rural Ambassador Award is a National Competition that highlights and celebrates young people who have a genuine interest in rural and regional Australia.

The Parkes Rural Ambassador compe­tition has been running since 2022. The three previous winners of the competition were Jess Kinsela in 2024, Joel Maguire in 2023 and Sally Wright in 2022.

The competition aims to build and de­velop the skills of our future leaders, volun­teers and community members through a professional development series.

Ali Hall from The Parkes Show Commit­tee said “Anyone that is interested in what the competition is and is considering doing something to develop their professional skills and get involved in the Parkes com­munity or the local show. Bring a friend and enjoy a chat, over a beer and pizza, with some of the committee members and other potential entrants.”

Participation in the Parkes Show Rural Ambassador competition offers more than just a chance to win a title. It provides an opportunity to connect with like minded in­dividuals who share a passion for agricul­ture and community involvement.

“The information afternoon will be an in­formal gathering. There will be information and entry forms available and the oppor­tunity for those considering the opportunity to ask questions or get a better feel for the event. Organised as a light hearted, drop in and bump out as works for each person from 6pm until 8pm,” said Ali.

Grand Opening Of The Lachie Cafe

Say ‘Hi’ to Kenneth and Christine at the Lachie Cafe

Head along to Forbes’ newest eatery, The Lachie Cafe next Mon­day 4 August, and meet the owners Kenneth and Christine. The couple started Just Eat Me Grazing in November last year, with Christine saying: “It was purely because my baby was very at­tached and I needed to ensure our bills were getting paid. We ex­pected so little, but it just blossomed to the point we needed to find a permanent shop.”

The Lachie Cafe is situated inside the Forbes Lachlan Vintage Village Information Centre. “The Lachie Cafe has always been a dream of mine. Driving past the Lachlan Vintage Village for the last three years after moving here from Canberra, I’ve always loved the space. So when the opportunity came up, we took it and ran with it! Opening the cafe door on Monday is beyond exciting and I’m eager to show Forbes what we offer,” said Christine.

Locals and visitors who experience The Lachie Cafe can expect friendly faces, freshly prepared food in the grab and go, a carefully thought-out menu, along with daily specials. Customer service is a priority for Kenneth, Christine and the staff, and serving spec­tacular food and beverages to customers is their first and fore­most goal.

Cristine lives by the philoso­phy of ‘good food done well’ and that’s exactly what customers will find at The Lachie Cafe. Every­one is invited to the grand open­ing on Monday 4 August from 7am – 4pm, with 20% off every­thing on the day!

Winter Walk-in Soup Kitchen

Members of the Forbes Community are invited and encouraged to drop into the Forbes Evening Branch of CWA’s ‘Winter Walk in Soup Kitchen’ on Wednesday 2 July. The soup kitchen will be held at the CWA Rooms, Lachlan Street, Forbes from 12:30pm.

Members of the Forbes Evening Branch are looking forward to serving members of our Community, especially our elderly and employees of business houses in the CBD of Forbes, as well as anyone wishing to en­joy a warm bowl of soup.

The cost will be $5 per bowl, and each serve will be accompanied by a bread roll and a hot beverage. This service offers an opportunity for elderly community mem­bers to sit, have a chat and enjoy the com­pany of others.

Funds raised from the soup kitchen will be utilised by the Forbes Evening Branch to support further causes in our community.

The Forbes Evening Branch operates un­der the Guidelines of the Country Women’s Association of NSW. The CWA was formed in 1922 when country women were fighting isolation and a lack of health facilities. The CWA is the largest women’s organisation in Australia and aims to improve conditions for country women and children.

Would you like to make new friends and make a difference in our community? Some of CWA values include supporting each other, advocating on community is­sues, sustainable development and the protection of the environment and social issues.

CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes To Hold Thank You Event For Forbes Community

CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes financial counsellor and senior support worker – disaster relief Carole Shennan providing flood recovery support at Forbes.

CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes (CCWF) is inviting all community members and ser­vice providers to their Thank You, Forbes Community Event on Wednesday, 2 July.

The occasion is a small gesture of ap­preciation for all those the organisation has worked alongside since the 2022 flooding in the town and its surrounds.

At its worst in November 2022, the La­chlan River peaked at 10.7 metres at Forbes, flooding more than 700 residential and commercial properties in the town.

CCWF, in particular its Financial Stability team, has provided practical support and stand with community members as they negotiate the long-term and wide-ranging consequences of flooding in the 2.5 years since.

CCWF Financial Stability portfolio man­ager, Louise Cormie said the organisation was holding the event to thank all the com­munity members who had placed their trust in her team, as well as the service provid­ers who had worked with them to provide the much needed support.

“We want to take a moment to say thank you, and celebrate the wonderful people in our community as they work towards re­covery,” Mrs Cormie said.

“We are grateful to be part of this com­munity, and want the community to know we are with them for the long journey of re­covery from natural disaster.

“Flood-affected residents can continue to contact our financial counsellors for sup­port, advocacy and referrals.”

The event, to be held in the Forbes Town Hall from 11am-2pm, will include a barbe­cue meal, fruit platters and soft drinks, and a gift for every attendee, as well as lucky door prizes. Forbes Shire Council’s GIVIT team and the Disaster Response Legal Service will also be attending and ready to support community members.

“We are looking forward to coming to­gether with the community for a relaxed and enjoyable event on July 2,” Mrs Corm­ie said.

Regional Arts Gathering To Be Held In Condobolin

Arts OutWest invites the community to a day of networking and hearing local arts stories at their Regional Gathering and An­nual General Meeting on Sunday 22 June in Condobolin.

“We call the day a regional gathering and AGM because it’s far more than a meet­ing,” said Arts OutWest’s executive director Kylie Shead.

“It’s always a great day of catching up with creatives and arts supporters and connect­ing with the Arts OutWest team. There’s an art exhibition and talks and tours to give an insight into the cultural life of Condobolin.

We also throw in a free lunch.”

“Never seen the Utes in the Paddock public art? Keen to explore Sculpture Down the Lachlan on your drive? Want to see behind-the-scenes at the Wiradjuri Cultural Centre or the Condobolin and District His­torical Museum? This is your chance,” Ms Shead said.

A roving event, the day starts at 11am on Sunday 22 June for coffee at Utes in the Paddock at Lachlan at Shire Visitor Information Centre. Guests then choose between tours and talks at the Wiradjuri Study Centre and their gallery and Con­dobolin and District Historical Museum (11:45am – 1pm).Then heading to Condobolin Commu­nity and Arts Centre for lunch (1-2pm) and viewing the local ‘Showcasing the Lachlan’ art exhibition, followed by Arts OutWest and local artist presentations (2-2.30pm) and the official formal AGM at 2.30pm. The day should wrap up by 3pm.

Registration Open For Heavy Vehicle Breakfast

Registrations are open for this year’s Central West NSW Heavy Vehicle Breakfast Forum, which will be held at the Forbes Inn on Thursday 12 June. Local farmers, contract harvesters, couriers, truck drivers and transport company operators are invited to at­tend.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, who is organising the fo­rum said this year’s event will focus on higher productivity vehicles, safety, compliance and industry case studies and there will be a high productivity vehicle on display.

“Since its inception in 2012, the breakfast forum has brought to­gether the local freight industry to discuss issues affecting them.

“Come along to listen, learn and ask questions of industry ex­perts from NHVR, Transport for NSW, Parkes Shire Council, NSW Police, Essential Energy, Midland and Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds” Ms Suitor said.

Empowering Regional Youth To Connect And Thrive

Young people, businesses and commu­nity organisations from across the Central West are invited to register for Connect and Thrive – Pathways, a dynamic, free youth event focused on building leadership skills, making real-world connections and prepar­ing for future opportunities.

The event will take place at the Cooke Park Pavillion in Parkes on Tuesday 3 June and will equip young people aged 15 to 20 with the tools, networks and confidence they need to shape their futures.

Delivered by the NSW Office for Regional Youth, Connect and Thrive – Pathways is a direct response to feedback from the 2024 Your Voice, Our Future consultation and NSW Youth Summit, where young people called for more meaningful, face to face en­gagement in their own communities.

The agenda includes a youth-led net­working session, a leadership and com­munication skills workshop and a Pitch It session featuring local businesses, coun­cils and community groups sharing oppor­tunities for youth employment and engage­ment.

Another highlight is the Think Tank ses­sion, where young people will collaborate with their peers to co-design solutions to challenges they face in their communities.

Free Online Child Car Seat Safety Workshop

Parents, carers and grandparents of young children are invited to attend one of two free online workshops being held next week to provide important safety information about child car seats.

The workshops are being conducted by Parkes, Forbes and La­chlan Shire Councils in partnership with Transport for NSW. The workshops will be held online via Microsoft Teams, on Tuesday 13 May at 10am and again at 7pm, and will run for about an hour.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Mela­nie Suitor, said the correct selection, installation and adjustment of child car seats is vital to ensure children’s safety when travelling in vehicles.

“The workshop will cover the National Child Restraint Laws, types of child car seats available, correct installation and adjust­ment, when to move to the next car seat, accessories, tips for sec­ondhand car seats and much more.

“It will be a great refresher for grandparents, as child car seats and the rules have changed a lot since they had their children, but also for parents and carers as they are navigating their way through their child or children’s growth.

“Local checking day events show that around 80% of the child car seats we checked were incorrectly installed. Transport for NSW research shows that children who are not restrained correct­ly are seven times more likely to sustain life-threatening injuries in a crash than those who are properly secured. It’s so important to ensure your precious cargo is safe,” said Ms Suitor.

Thousands Of Pre-loved Items Saved From Landfill

Buying and selling second hand items is a great way to generate some extra cash or save money on everyday items.

Parkes Shire residents turned their unwant­ed items into cash on the annual Garage Sale Trail last November, extending the life of over 8,478 pre-loved items, 42% of which would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Results of a recently released report by Garage Sale Trail and Taverner Research Group highlighted the outcomes of the waste reduction initiative made possible by Parkes Shire Council and the NSW Envi­ronment Protection Authority (NSW EPA). It showed a win-win for locals, with the av­erage garage sale organiser taking home $499 and shoppers saving money too with access to cheaper, second-hand products.

Parkes Shire Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure & Sustainability, Mr Graeme Bayliss, said the research highlighted the local community’s commitment to reduce waste.

“Programs like Garage Sale Trail are im­portant in shifting perceptions of secondhand and getting more people reusing items rather than sending them to landfill,” Mr Bayliss said.

Across Parkes Shire over 2,700 people participated in the two big weekends of ga­rage sales which aim to provide a fun way for residents to reduce waste, make some money and get to know their neighbours.

Looking across the state, 132,691 people participated in the council-powered circular economy event in NSW, with over 320,000 pre-loved items sold and $1.6 million gener­ated for the local economy.

“More and more people are looking for ways to generate some extra cash or save money on everyday items. Buying and sell­ing second-hand is one easy way we can all do this, whether it’s hosting a garage sale or selling items online”, said Barbara Gill, General Manager of Garage Sale Trail.

Canowindra Balloon Festival Ready To Take Off

The skies over Canowindra are set to daz­zle as the beloved Canowindra Balloon Festival returns from 26 April to 4 May.

This vibrant week-long celebration of hot air balloons, music, art, food, and commu­nity spirit offers something for everyone.

Festivities lift off with the Welcome Street Party on 26 April, featuring live music from Nerida Cuddy and the Neil Gill Band, along­side a sizzling BBQ competition, delicious food, and market stalls. Throughout the week, enjoy Flicker Fest at Rosnay, crea­tive Paint and Sips, inspiring workshops from The Creative Cure, and Sue Hodges’ art exhibition at the Canowindra Services Club, just to name a few of the offerings for the week.
