Cowboy Logic At Sahara Park

November 17, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

A dozen cutting horse enthusiasts joined world-renowned horseman Tony Ernst for a weekend workshop at the Sahara Park Riding School last weekend. The riders and their horses came from across the state to refine their skills under Tony’s expert instruction. Tony is one the most sought after and highly respected horsemen in the world. He has developed a unique approach to horsemanship, based on respect, attitude, and breathing. “Horse whisperers are for Hollywood,” he said. “You’ve got to be a horse listener.”

Tony stressed that his approach isn’t just about helping horses, it’s about helping people. And he has helped a lot of people. Aside from cutting horse enthusiasts, Tony has delivered workshops for troubled students, and has also run corporate clinics to help executives enhance their leadership skills. It all comes down to earning respect. “You have to prove you’re someone worth following,” he said. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Tony believes that a lot of wisdom is found in adversity. Listening to his story, it becomes clear where his wisdom was forged. In his youth Tony was involved in an horrific accident and was confined to a wheelchair for three years until he taught himself to walk again. He credits his recovery to a positive attitude, his practice of Kung Fu,
and the power of breathing exercises. This formed the foundations for Tony’s unique horsemanship program, which he has branded Cowboy Logic. “The only thing you’ve really got control of in this world is your attitude,” he said.

Special Students Chase Cricket Dream

November 10, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The first Thursday in November was a special day for around 50 special class students from Parkes and Forbes public schools when they participated in DreamCricket at Parkes Pubic School. DreamCricket brings together children with a disability from years three to six. It was originally developed in the NSW Central Highlands as the result of a partnership between Rotary, the Bradman Foundation and the Movement Disorder Foundation.

The day was made super special when 18 Year 7 students from Parkes High joined in with their teacher Mark Ranger to help organise the games and cook lunch. About half the high school students completed Year 6 at Parkes Public School in 2015. The DreamCricket program allows the students to develop their hand-eye coordination, movement skills and balance in a team environment, while at the same time enjoying sport.

Students enjoyed the sporting challenges, which involved groups rotating around four specially adapted cricket-based activities. The participation and smiles on faces said it all. DreamCricket gives students that normally would not participate in sport a chance to be involved. It gives participants a chance to enjoy physical activity while developing self-confidence, self-esteem, levels of behaviour and citizenship.

The DreamCricket program has grown to schools and children throughout Australia and internationally. The day was organised as a joint effort by the Rotary Clubs of Dubbo East, Forbes, Parkes and Orange Daybreak. It was coordinated by Don Stephens, Chair of Dream- Cricket Australia and member of the Rotary Club of Dubbo West.

Super Fast Mitch Wins Rookie Of The Year

November 3, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes local Mitch Roylance is making a name for himself in the sport of V8 Superboat racing. He won Rookie of the Year at the Australian V8 Superboat Championship in Temora last weekend against about 30 competitors from all over Australia. He also came third overall in the season series of seven races.

He competed in six of the seven races this year in his superboat called Blackjack. Mitch made sure to keep the Rookie of the Year award in the family as his older brother Justin won it in 2013. Justin also competed last weekend at Lake Centenary, a purpose built track. The two brothers competed against each other and took out second and third positions in one of the races.

“It was Mitch’s first year of competing and he has done fantastically,” said Justin. He has been a navigator for a driver previously. Mitch’s navigator at Temora was Matt Hearn. The sport of superboating is likened to a rally on water. A crew of two, a driver and a navigator, race individually against the clock through a twisting series of channels in less than a metre of water. The navigator uses hand signals to indicate to the driver where to go.

The race course normally has 25 to 30 changes of direction and generally takes just 45–60 seconds. Justin said a superboat accelerated from 1 to 100km in 1.8 seconds and reached a top speed of 120km/h. “When we turn
we have up to six G-force and therefore need to be strapped in with a five-point race harness.

The sport originated in New Zealand and came to Australia about 20 years ago.
