Magpies Plucked By Tigers

At the start of the season both sides fought out a gallant draw but this time it would be different when the Forbes Magpies took on the Nyngan Tigers. In a game that was largely one way traffic, an under-manned Magpies side fought hard but inevitably lost 34-10.

Forbes is running out of time if they have ambitions of playing finals football.

Organisers Bowled Over By Strong Turn Out

April 9, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Players from Sydney and the Central Coast arrived in Forbes for last weekend’s $10,000 Easter Bowls Carnival at the Forbes Bowling Club. The Men’s Pairs Final was taken out by Sydney duo Terry Pappas from Waverley and John Fitzgerald from Taren Point in a tight affair with “Wallacia Wildcats” young guns Bradley Rowley and Zane Ballhouse. In a see-sawing battle, the elder statesmen got the chocolates 14-12 in front of a packed house in superb conditions. Congratulations to all 32 teams and organisers on a tremendous event.

Bowls Round Up

June 29, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Indoor bowls

Every Monday from 6pm a group of happy players get together to enjoy a friendly game of indoor bowls. Their love of the game and a good laugh helps them face the cold night air in these winter months.

Last Monday, there were peals of laughter from the outset, when Squirt (John Read) turned up with tickets on himself. He has since been reminded to take the tags off his new shirts!

Everyone is welcome to join the group at the Forbes Bowling and Sports Club. Just come along any Monday night from 6pm to have a go.

Ladies bowls

In the ladies competition last week, Alison Cutcliffe and Hazel Prince faced Glenys Ryan and Loris Stewart in the final of the Club Minor Pairs. Both teams were new to the competition and impressed everyone with their skills. Playing 18 ends is chal- lenging, and requires intense concentration throughout the game. In the end, Hazel and Alison won 23-10. Congratulations to both teams for a great effort.

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Leisa Burton did it for the 9th time! She is the Club Major Singles Champion of the Forbes Ladies Bowlers. Leisa played Ann Mackay on a lovely autumn Saturday morning in the final. The game started well with great shots from both players. Leisa played her usual game with confidence, when Ann had her bowls on the jack. Leisa managed to change the head and won with 26 shots to 8.

Women’s Bowling Club Off To State Championships

May 26, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

100_2272Last Tuesday and Wednesday Forbes was host to the Region 12 play-offs with pennant teams two, three and four from Dubbo, Orange, Gulgong, Parkes, and Forbes competing to play in the State Championships in August at Nowra. As Forbes were the number two pennant team to win at district level we played Dubbo City and although we had a slow start our Forbes team kept on winning each end until we passed their score to win by three shots, 31-28. What an effort and we were rewarded with a gold medal by our District President Annette Tisdell and now are off to play in the State Championships on August 15- 17. All districts in New South Wales will be competing and several of our players were lucky to be playing in this event in 2006 and are excited to represent our small club once again.

Andrews Family Excels at Easter Bowls

March 31, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Scooter Andrews

The Forbes Sport & Recreation Club hosted the Annual Easter Lawn Bowls Carnival over the weekend with thirty-four teams from all over NSW competing in the Pairs and Fours competitions. A large majority of the teams hailed from the Sydney Metropolitan area and were impressed with the excellent facilities the Forbes club had to offer. The competition is for all male teams and Forbes was well represented in all divisions.

The Andrews family featured strongly in the pairs and the fours with Jarrod
Andrews & Grandfather Don Drabsch making it to the Semi-finals of the pairs along with Mitchell Andrews who teamed up with Bruce Williams, also making it to the Semifinals. Jarrod and Mitchell then competed in the Fours with their father Scott and Grandfather, Don Drabsch and made their way to the final on Sunday evening. Spectators were kept entertained with some very strong bowls but a very strong and slick Belrose Team edged out the locals to win.

Bowls

November 19, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

The Minor pairs between Ray “Monty” Montgomery & Johnny Kennedy verses Peter Corliss & Viv Russell was played last Saturday. What a torrid battle it was. Monty and John ended up with a 25:19 win. MIXED

PAIRS AND TRIPLES: notes by Leisa Burton.
We had one game of mixed Pairs on Saturday, Anne Walker and Don Craft played Lindy Cannon and Jarrod Andrews. Lindy and Jarrod had a comfortable 22-8 win. On Sunday Leisa Burton, Wayne Burton and Anne Walker played Graham Rutherford, Ric Stewart and Alison Cutcliffe. Reggie’s team won by two shots 20-18 in a close fought game. Although they led all the way, the spectators were on the edge of their seats during the game. Thank you
to those who watched and showed fantastic interest in the mixed games.

Last Wednesday was another interesting day on the green. Gunna Williams and Johnny Gorton were a couple of points ahead all the way, ending up with a 14:9 win from Scott McKellar and Barry Wright. In the other game Dale Barker led for Alf Davies with Rob Priest as skip. Dale and Alf were on fire to take a 20:9 win from Peter Greenhalgh,
Ray Dunstan and Peter Mackay.

Rooster played his first game of singles on Thursday and at one stage was leading Scott McKellar 14:5. Scott ended up winning the match by 22:17. On Sunday morning the competition continued in ideal conditions. Results for the
morning saw Don Hodson defeat Brian Joliffe. The marker was Ray Drabsch. John Kennedy defeated Rodney Howarth their marker was John Stringer. Cliff Nelson defeated Debbie Brown and their marker was John Bentick.

There were three games of triples. Pat Hodson, John Baass and Alan Phillips defeated John Dietrich, Tony Bratton and Les Cannon. Next door was John Lasker, Kevin Hodge and Mitch Hodge who defeated Warren Hodge, Glenn Ruge and Barry Anderson. Finally John Williams, Grant Lambert and Russell Hodge defeated Scott McKellar, Kerry Smith and Alan Smith. It was good competition as there were five players with resting touchers. They were Warrick Neville, Don Hodson, John Lasker, John Baass and Kerry Smith.

The winners for the day were Don Hodson and Ray Drabsch. The runners up were Warrick Neville, Glen Ruge and Barry Anderson. As this Sunday is President’s Day it would help if your Buck Bentick matches could be played during the week.
