New Podiatry Services For Forbes

Flannery’s Pharmacy is happy to announce a new podiatry service available at the pharmacy. Adam Debenham, who is originally from Forbes, and Bill Devanney will be visiting Flannery’s Pharmacy commencing 19th July to provide easy access to podiatry services for Forbes residents.

When Was Your Last HIV Check?

NSW Health is encouraging people to have their HIV status checked with testing now easier and faster than ever before.

Manager of HIV and Related Programs (HARP), Ann Ryan said around 10% of people with HIV in NSW may be unaware they have the virus, a statistic NSW Health hopes to change.

“As well as risking their own health, people with undiagnosed HIV infection are at risk of passing the virus on to others without know- ing,” Ann said.

However, the statistics are improving. The number of HIV tests done in NSW continues to increase with over 500,000 tests conduct- ed last year, a 7% increase on the number of tests in 2015.

Nursing Unit Manager Dubbo Sexual Health, Margie Crowley said HIV testing was easier and faster than ever with a high quality, safe and innovative HIV testing ser- vice. To make testing for HIV easier, the NSW Government has launched the Dried Blood Spot HIV test – a free, easy, private and accurate way to test for HIV at home.

“We need people in groups at risk of HIV to test regularly so they can receive early treatment and prevent transmission of HIV to others.”

Most (82%) new HIV infections reported last year were in gay and homosexually- active men, with heterosexual people ac- counting for 15%. One third of people newly diagnosed with HIV were diagnosed with signs of late infection, which could have been avoided with earlier testing.

Margie said heterosexual people who may be in an at risk group should also be tested. “This includes people from African and Asian countries, and/or those who have had previous sexual partners from one of these countries. Anyone who has had unprotected sex should also be tested.”
“All pregnant women should be tested irrespective of risk, as treatment during pregnancy is very effective in preventing infection from mother to child.”

Bedgerabong Pig Sale A Success

Local selling agents and brothers Scott and Murray Reid from VC Reid and Son were very pleased with the result of the pig sale held at Bedgerabong last month.

There were eight vendors with 91 pigs sold for an average of $929. Buyers came from Sydney, Casino, Kempsey and the lo- cal area of Forbes.

Murray said there was a total clearance at what were better than expected prices, “as recent prices had been somewhat lower”. The top priced boar, bred by Chris and James Dockrill from Casino, was purchased by Paul and Emma Baxter from Riverdale, Forbes. The boar was sold for $2,600. They said they were keen to gain some new blood for their breeding drift.

A total of 25 mated gilts averaged $1,079; 15 large white boars averaged $1,110; nine Landrace boars averaged $1,444.44; three Duroc boars averaged $600; 21 large white gilts av- eraged $638.15 and seven Landrace gilts averaged $7,657.14.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update

Despite a small offering of 28,459 bales, price reductions were evident from the outset. Best style/spec lots continued to be in demand and fared relatively well, however wools showing small impurities or slightly unfavourable test results were quickly discounted. The finer microns were most affected resulting in losses of 60 to 80 cents, while the broader mi- crons defied the trend and even managing some small gains.

The skirting market followed a very similar path to the fleece, with best style/ low vm skirtings finding good support while the average style & higher vm lots were discounted by up to 80 cents.

The finer crossbreds continued to find excellent support and were 5 to 10 cents dearer, while the broader end were highly irregular. Again carding buyers had to fight for their share of a limited offering, with most prices and descriptions remaining generally unchanged for the week.

Next week will see a further reduction in quantity and with Fremantle in recess, there are currently only 25,278 bales rostered for sale.

Painted Daisies Blossoming In New Location

Born and bred local Janet Callaghan is celebrating five years in business at Painted Daisies.

After spending the first few years at 77 Rankin Street, she moved the shop to Tem- plar Street last year, and has been pleased by the positive response from customers.

“I’ve had so many good comments from people who say the shop feels more homely and welcoming,” said Janet.

“Being closer to the coffee shops and next door to Little Extras is wonderful.”

With the weather growing colder, the shop offers a cosy and warm place to browse beautiful homewares as you wander through town.

From large items like a stunning carved bedhead and solid teak dining table, to candles, cushions, prints, rugs, throws, and even tea, there is something for everyone.

“I’m not a qualified designer, but people do ask me things when they’re redecorating. I suggest to them that they do one room at a time. Put your staple pieces in first, then add colour with accessories.”

Andrew Brings Joy To St Laurence’s

Last week St Laurence’s welcomed Andrew Chinn to our school community. Andrew is an Australian religious songwriter and sing- er and his songs have brought great joy to many with his music used in schools across Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. Andrew connected with and inspired all stu- dents from Kinder to Year 6; we laughed, sang and danced our way through the day, sharing a wonderful message of God’s love and our shared journey together as God’s family.

Forbes Public SRC Learn New Skills In

The Forbes and District Lions Club once again supported Forbes Public School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) with a generous donation.

For the fourth consecutive year the Lions Club funded 19 students to attend a GRIP Leadership Conference in Dubbo. Grip Leadership provide enthusiastic and skilled presenters to deliver practical and interactive training conferences for student leaders. The sessions provide a better un- derstanding of effective leadership, the expectations of responsibility, generating ideas and turning ideas into action.

PrincipalDafyddThomassaid:“The leadership workshops in Dubbo with 300 other stu- dents from across the region was extremely beneficial for the students. The day equipped them with a number of critical skills and ap- proaches to an array of challenges student leaders can face. It was inspiring to see students rise to new attitudes and embrace new learning. Opportunities like this leave a lasting impact on students.”

Working With The Wider Community

When designing the Forbes Preschool we also wanted it to be a place for our com- munity, our friends from other towns, and a place to belong. We have been been one year in our new premises and we have so many partners we welcome into our service.

The Girinya room (Girinya means play in Wiradjuri) welcomes all sorts of visitors each week: the early childhood nurses mother’s group, the Australian Breastfeed- ing Association (ABA) meet here, the Wiradjuri Language classes use the room, and an occupational therapist and a speech therapist assist with a school readiness program from the room.

Other ways we have connected with the wider community have included being part of Food Revolution Week, and the Year 6 students from St Laurence’s came to visit last Friday to teach the children about the zones of regulation.

New additions to the building include our chickens, who laid their first egg this week, a cover over our swing set and new resourc- es added to the rooms.

A Win For Forbes North

The Forbes North PSSA team versed Forbes Public School recently. We were rather nervous as most of our team are short and we felt a little overwhelmed. It was a close game, especially in the first and second quarters. At the end of the second quarter we were behind and realised it was time to try really hard and play together. At the end of the game we were ahead by 14 points. We were extremely happy to win the game and move to the next round in Dubbo. I am so proud of my team. I would like to thank Miss Ari Kenny, Miss McManus and Robyn Kenny for helping us prepare and taking us to our games.
