Pamela Cook And Penelope Janu: A Country Vet Christmas

October 19, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Pamela Cook and Penelope Janu, co-authors of A Country Vet Christmas, have independently sold tens of thousands of books across several genres

You are invited to meet two fantastic authors, Pamela Cook and Penelope Janu, when they launch their latest book, A Country Vet Christma at Forbes Library on Wednesday 25th October at 2pm.

Pamela Cook is an author, podcaster and teacher who writes page-turning contemporary women’s fiction, delving deep into the psychology of her characters and the complexity of relationships in all their forms. She has had four novels published traditionally and two independent titles.

Pamela writes women’s fiction set in locations you’ll want to escape to, and stories that will keep you turning the page. Her novels feature tangled family relationships, the ups and downs of friendship, and explore issues like grief and loss, belonging and love. They aim to tug at your heart-strings so if you cry while you’re reading Pamela’s books, her goal is achieved! But don’t worry – there will also be a hopeful ending.

And author Penelope Janu writes stories about clever and adventurous women who don’t mean to fall in love, but do.

Penelope Janu has a passion for creating stories that explore social and environmental issues, but her novels are fundamentally a celebration of Australian characters and communities. Her first novel, In at the Deep End, came out with HarperCollins/ HQ in 2017. Since then, she’s had a novella and six novels published, the most recent being her January 2023 release, Shelter from the Storm.

Penelope enjoys riding horses, exploring the Australian countryside and dreaming up challenging hiking adventures. Nothing makes her happier as a writer than readers falling in love with her clever, complex and adventurous characters.

Their latest project is A Country Vet Christmas – a heartwarming collection of five brand-new festive stories from favourite Australian authors about country vets, love and small-town Christmas charm.
Come to meet these fascinating women supported by The Book Dispensary, Forbes.

Forbes Garden Club Report

October 19, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Maree Yapp was the guest speaker at the Forbes Garden Club meeting.

Our recent Garden Club meeting was held at the home of Trevor and Irene Ford, with 31 members present. A description of the garden was given by Irene: the home being purchased 13 years ago and having changed into a magnificent display of different shrubs and trees, growing cyclamens from seed and growing succulents. Elvy thanked Irene and all of the members showed their appreciation.

Elvy presided over the business meeting and Sylvia Glasson acted as secretary. Final preparations were made for the upcoming Open Gardens Weekend and members were reminded to make slices and deliver to the Men’s shed.

A grant was received to enable us to have the Town Hall free for our 70th Birthday celebrations on 11th November. Members asked to get their tickets for the luncheon, which cost $60.

Our guest speaker was Maree Yapp, who spoke about her involvement with Landcare for the past 13 years. She also spoke of her work with the Forbes North Public School Year 5 students, Eco Day programs and using the school produce to make jams, which received prizes at the recent show. Jeanette Thomas thanked Maree for her very interesting talk and display.

Raffle winners were first Colleen Liebich, and second Loris Molloy. The flower of the month was first Sylvia Glasson with a begonia, second Colleen Liebich with an iris and third Marg West with a rose.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 26th October at 2pm at home of Helen and

Kingsley Green. To get there, head south on the Newell Highway, after the bridge turn left onto Wirrinya Rd, follow to Victory Rd, go to the intersection and turn left to “Brooklyn”. Please bring a chair, hat and a cup – see you there. In case of wet weather the meeting will be at the Men’s Shed.

October 12, 2023 by Roxane Manley

The Forbes Business Chamber Find It In Forbes Christmas Committee is currently in the process of organising their annual Christmas promotions.

The prize money this year will be a total of $20,000. The Find It In AMAZING Forbes Christmas Carnival will be held on 8th December 2023.

This year the Chamber will be organising a number of smaller events that will encourage people to participate in the draws and to shop locally. The launch of the Find it in Forbes this Christmas campaign is 4th November, with draws beginning on 13th November. Draws will be held every week with the final draws held on Christmas Eve.

Again, the Chamber will use QR Code for entry in lieu of tickets. A paper form will be given to each store to assist people who do not have a telephone that can cope with the QR Code.

This year we have gained funding to assist with a TV commercial that will promote Forbes and the Christmas Promotion to a wider audience. The advertising area will include the Central West and the ACT.

Deadline for sponsorship participation is Friday 13th October 2023.

Mama Mia, Here We Go Again – Trundle ABBA Festival

October 12, 2023 by Roxane Manley

It’s a much-anticipated comeback for the Trundle ABBA Festival following the heart breaking, yet sensible decision, to cancel last year’s event due to the flooding and adverse weather conditions the region was suffering late last year.

ABBA fans from all over the world are set to pack their dancing shoes, sparkly outfits and head to the worlds one and only ABBA Festival in Trundle this Saturday, 14th October 2023.

We hope you’re in the mood for a dance, as returning to headline the festival is the world’s number one ABBA tribute band, Bjorn Again. These super troupers put on a fantastic show at the Parkes Leagues Club last year following the cancellation of the festival and we’re keen to see them have the time of their lives as they perform on this year’s festival stage.

Three fabulous bands will support Bjorn Again and ensure Trundle’s Berryman Oval is full of Dancing Queens throughout the day. The hottest live disco show on the circuit, Disco Revolution is set to have the crowd dancing to classic hits from the 70’s and 80’s.

For those who prefer to shake their tailfeather, the fun-loving Blues Brothers Re-Booted will entertain with their soul, rhythm and blues set.

Trundle ABBA Festival also continues to showcase local talent, with Parkes trio, Amitie, back by popular demand to harmonise with sweet sounds from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Mayor of Parkes Shire, Councillor Niel Westcott, said “We are delighted to finally be hosting the Trundle ABBA Festival again this year. We have secured some of the best acts in live music and are thrilled to have Bjorn Again headlining.”

“Trundle is the home of the ABBA Festival, and we can’t wait to light up the streets with music and glitter once again,” he added.

It’s time to dance and jive and have the time of your lives at the Trundle ABBA Festival. Tickets go on sale Monday 3rd July, with youth and group discounts available. For more information, visit www.trundleabbafestival.com.au

Forbes Shire Council Is Going On A Bear Hunt

October 12, 2023 by Roxane Manley

The annual Teddy Bear Picnic is back bigger and better than ever after several years of absence due to COVID and flooding.

Teddy bears will be in the spotlight at Forbes’ stunning Lions Park between 10am and 2pm, this Saturday 21st October.

Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM welcomed funding assistance from the State Government, saying support for events like Children’s Week is so important.

“Children are indeed our future and like this year’s Children’s Week theme outlines, all children have the right to relax, play and join in a wide range of leisure activities.”

Council has organised an enormous list of activities including ‘funtastic’ items like a jumping castle, face painting, temporary tattoos, food vendors and craft.

But wait – there is so, so much more! Who could pass up circus performances, the chance for a beloved teddy bear to have a ‘health check’, balloon twisting, obstacle courses, making delicious fruity faces and get a ‘beary’ cute pic taken in the photo booth.

Forbes NSW Fire and Rescue will have their big red truck there for the young ones to experience in person, Netwaste will be spreading their recycling message and parents will have the opportunity to have their child car seats, boosters and harnesses checked for safety.

Word on the street is that there are some extra special surprise guests lined up as well.

Mayor Miller urges all youngsters to grab their teddy – and their parents or carers – and head to Lions Park to celebrate.

“Lions Park is the perfect setting for a teddy bear picnic, and with spring well and truly here let’s celebrate Children’s Week outdoors in the sunshine with all those we love and cherish,” she said.

For more information head to the Forbes Youth Action Team’s Facebook page or Forbes Shire Council website.

Celebrating Regional Women

October 5, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Nominations are now open for this year’s NSW Regional Woman of the Year Award. The awards provide an opportunity to recognise exceptional women doing inspiring things in their communities.

The award is all about showcasing women who contribute to the fabric of their local area by making contributions that have a significant and positive impact on the lives of others.

There’s no denying that women who live and work in rural and regional areas face conditions that sometimes require that extra level of resilience and determination, so it’s fitting that there’s an award that specifically honours women in the regions.

If you know of an inspirational woman that is making an outstanding contribution, whether it be in education, health, agriculture, the arts, fundraising, volunteer work, or just generally within the community, please take the time to nominate them.

Nominations close Tuesday 24th October 2023, and can be made at: www.nsw.gov.au

Spring has sprung and QUE has organised five beautiful gardens for you to view

Parkes QUE members look forward to your company this Sunday, 8th October, 10am-4pm at the Parkes Racecourse and in the five open gardens. Money raised stays in our local community, supporting hearing, speech, and wellbeing.

291 Back Yamma Road

Two years ago this property was a cow paddock! Last November the nearby creek flooded the garden and the house, and during this last winter the garden has endured severe frosts! This garden was chosen for our Open Gardens event to show people how quickly a garden can be established, and what plants will survive the “sometimes

harsh” weather conditions. We anticipate opening this garden again in a year or two so that viewers can measure progress.

5 Arana Place

The drought-tolerant front garden is easy care and sustainable. The back garden provides the visitor with a totally different perspective and includes a Balinese hut, decorative items such as water fountains, plants, shade, and garden art – all providing a calming and relaxing atmosphere.

1 Jubilee Street

This is a plant lovers haven, especially under the back deck where the owner has a huge variety of very loved indoor and outdoor plants and hanging baskets. Screening trees surround the house and provide a wonderful forum for the collection of artworks, sculptures, mirrors etc.

35-37 Thomas Street

With over a hundred different species, these extensive surrounding gardens have been

through quite the makeover in the last two years! Featuring a broad range of unique Australian natives alongside a careful selection of exotic plants, this garden abounds with vibrancy and colour.

Cnr Reymond and Jones Street

This is a wanderer’s paradise with lavender, pink jade, a vibrant Loropetalum with its unique tussle flowers, and a wonderful Bohemia Butterfly Tree, all with a magnificent view to the east of Parkes. (best parking in Jones Street)
