All Winyar Rams For Sale At Auction

August 25, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

winyar

The Winyar Merino and Poll Merino Stud on property Auction Ram sale takes place on 7th September at 1pm, with inspection starting at 10am. All rams on the property will be offered for sale to enhance the quality and selection on offer.

At Winyar a new feature to the ongoing measurement of Winyar rams is the Australian Sheep Genetics figures. These figures will be available on sale day or upon request. Winyar also offers a free sheep classing and advisory service, which results in huge gains.

According to Wool Classer for Winyar, Michelle Woodhead, the Winyar wools reaching cutting fleece of over 8.5kg average at 19 microns is quite an achievement in high rainfall. “The wool have excellent bloom, tensile strength and nourishment. I can thoroughly recommend the Winyar type.”

At Winyar, 2015 will go down as one of the most successful years for record ram sales, as well as good wool and sheep sales. For all enquiries, contact Rick Power on 0437 131 925 or Bill Gilbert on 0407 440 503.

Felix Rams – It’s All About The Lambs

August 25, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

logo

Felix Rams has a singular focus on producing efficient and profitable prime lambs by breeding high performance, structurally sound meat sheep rams. Since 2000 thy have weighed more than 19,000 lambs within 12 hours of birth. It is little wonder that a Felix client recently claimed: “You’ve solved our lambing problems”.

They use birthweights, Lambplan breeding values for birthweight and lambing ease to help eliminate the production of rams that sire lambs with excessively high or low birthweights.

At Felix Rams the priority is quick early growth, and maturity, not maximum adult ram size. Their rams won’t be the biggest you will buy, because great big rams are almost certainly late maturing rams. Felix Rams will efficiently produce a 22-28 kg lamb. Over the last five years they have been committed to DNA testing potential young sires for yield and eating quality with over 300 animals tested.

Felix Rams provides Lambplan breeding values for every ram sold, allowing lamb producers to buy on specification to suit their production system.

Felix Rams will offer around 140 Poll Dorset and 45 White Suffolk rams at their annual on-property sale at Greenethorpe on 6th September. Catalogues are available at www.felixrams.com.au or call Rodney on 0417 499 204, or the selling agents, Allan Gray and Co Cowra on 02 6342 2377.

A Great Season In The Making

August 11, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

IMG_0524

Things just keep getting better. What a month it has been: we have seen both sheep and cattle reach record highs, especially in the cattle market. With widespread rain over the last month we are seeing the makings of a great season, which is fantastic.

On the sheep side of the market we have seen all markets very strong. We are also noticing a good number of new season suckers coming onto the market that are receiving very strong competition and seeing the best of them make up $160 and $170, but take note with more numbers due to come onto the market these prices will only be sustainable for the best of them. On the trade and export markets we are still seeing prices in the mid to high $6/kg for the better finished lambs. The mutton market is still kicking along very strongly with most grades hovering around the 400c/kg mark.

The cattle market is still going from strength to strength with good feeder cattle attracting record prices with well bred steers reaching up to $4.25c/kg. These prices are bringing some great returns for clients. We are still seeing some good lines of grain fed cattle coming through the yards with grain fed steers making $3.40 to $3.90/kg, and the heifer portion making up to $3.70/kg. The cow market is still very strong with some of the best euro cows making in excess of $2.90/kg, but the majority of the good 3 and 4 score cows are still around the $2.50-$2.80/kg mark.

With spring just around the corner we are starting to see some strong activity from restockers trying to either restock or make use of ample feed. I think during the spring we will see very strong competition for all types of restocker livestock. With all this in mind I think we are in for very interesting times.

Record Prices Recorded In Livestock Markets

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Rain rain and more rain. Well yet another exiting month in the livestock
markets with some record prices being experienced.
The month of June has seen some more significant rises in both
sheep and cattle markets and this has all came down to the supply
and demand factor.
On the sheep and lamb front we are seeing dwindling supply and
drastic decreases in quality which, in turn, is seeing the prime condition
livestock attract premium prices.
This week we have seen the first of the new season 2nd X suckers
enter the market and attract strong competition and receiving up to
$160 or $6.50 to $6.80c/kg. We are still seeing very strong prices
and competition in the heavy domestic and export categories with
prices still in the mid to late 600c/kg mark.
We are starting to see secondary lambs get discounted and I believe
this will become more apparent over the next month. The mutton
market over the last month has firmed to sit around the 400c/kg
mark and should stay at these prices for the coming weeks.
On the cattle front we are seeing a record high Eastern Young Cattle
Indicator (EYCI) sitting currently at $6.59c/kg. How strong can it
get? Your guess is as good as mine.
Over the last month we have seen some very good grain fed cattle
enter the market and return some massive prices up to $3.50c/kg
and head returns of up to $2200. Feeder and restocker cattle are
reaching new levels again with restocking steers up to $4.10c/kg
and heavy feeder steers up to $3.75.
The cow market has been very sporadic with prices easing this
week. The best of our cows made up to $2.60c/kg back from $2.80c/
kg the week prior.
The next month will be an exciting one for all produces, agents and
processors trying to juggle these markets.
For any other information on markets don’t hesitate to call.

Jemalong Wool Pty Ltd Weekly Market Update

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download

Week ending: 30 June 2016
It was a strong finish to the 2015/16 season with the NRI gaining 14 cents to close at 1,317 the second highest season closing level on record.

Although all 3 centres were in operation it was another small sale of 28,866 bales making it the smallest 3-centre sale since August. It was a similar pattern to last week with the overall market spurred on by strong support in the medium/broader micron ranges, while the finer microns results lagged their broader counterparts, firming by a more modest 5 to 10 cents clean.

Merino Skirtings maintained good competition and firmed slightly. Merino Cardings also held firm for the week. Crossbreds had mixed results; recent support for the finer microns (25/26) persisted this week while the broader microns lost ground.

Two more auctions remain before the annual three week recess; next week is estimated at 38,265 bales.

Wet Weather Affects Stock Grazing

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

With all the wet weather stock grazing on winter forage crops may not be currently performing to their potential. Symptoms may include scouring, increased respiration, agitation, nasal and ocular discharge and lameness.

There is often a poor balance of the nutrients stock required to ensure their digestive and metabolic systems function properly. This results in poor feed utilisation (wasted feed), poor growth and weight gain potential.

Supplementation of stock with Grazemax Ultra loose mix has shown significant weight gain advantages and up to 65% less feed consumed per kilo of weight gain. Crop nitrogen requirements should also be closely assessed to meet potential crop demands.

Many factors will influence crop requirements such as paddock history, sowing nutrition, grazing, target yield and weed presume to name a few. Ground-spread topdressing opportunities are a little difficult at the moment so it’s best to be prepared. Speak to a local agronomist to help with topdressing considerations.

Miller And James More Than Your Average Real Estate

June 9, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Established in 1903, Miller and James Real Estate Temora is much more than just a traditional real estate business. Miller and James principles, Chris Reardon and Angus McLaren have been involved in agriculture all their lives. They were both raised on family farms and know agriculture in our region back to front. They understand that rural property transactions involve a lot more than putting a sign on the front gate and a couple of ads in the local paper.

Mr McLaren says the key to the success of Miller and James is relationship building. “Our business has been operating for 113 years. We have been dealing with some clients for three generations or more. Whether people are selling, buying or leasing rural property, we have a database that can find a solution to what our clients require in any situation. That is where we add value.”

Mr McLaren also said that as farms have become larger, Miller and James had made a conscious decision to increase the geographic spread of the business. “We basically service from the Lachlan to the Murray. We pop up all over the place. We may be based in Temora, but we travel everywhere. No farm is too big or too small for us to look at.”

With the rural property market very strong at the moment, Mr McLaren believes now is a good time for those people considering retirement or a change in direction to contact Miller and James to arrange an onfarm
meeting. “We provide free market appraisals and the best thing is that it doesn’t cost you a cent to talk to us,” said Mr McLaren

Rain Brings Strong Month For Livestock Market

June 9, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download

Wow what a month we have seen. With widespread rain throughout all of the eastern states of Australia we have seen some fire in our livestock markets. With this wide spread rain we have seen numbers restrict further in the sheep and cattle markets which intern has had positive gains in prices.

In the cattle market we are noticing a purely supply and demand driven market, with numbers low through all grades we are seeing restocking and feeder steers making from $3.40 to $3.80 c/kg, feeder and restocking heifers are making in excess of $3.00 c/kg and up to $3.50c/kg. On the export front we have seen some great gains with heavy steers and bullocks back over the $3.00 c/kg mark and up to $3.25c/kg, and cow supply has tightened and seen most grades receiving promising gains with the best of your heavy cows making up to $2.50 c/kg. I believe this cattle market for the next month will stay considerably strong as long as numbers stay low and demand keeps high.

To the sheep and lamb markets, hold onto your hats because things are really heating up, but for how long? With the lamb market we are seeing very strong gains in both domestic and export markets with most domestic and export processors offering over the hook rates in excess of $6.00 c/kg and in the saleyards we are seeing the best heavy trade and light export lambs making from $145 and up to $170 and the extra heavy lambs making up to $230.

The mutton market has rallied on to sky high rates with most mutton making in excess of $4.00c/kg and in the yards with the best of the heavy mutton making up to $170 for full wool heavy merino ewes and wethers.

So until next month let’s hope for these strong prices to continue. For any other information on market trends or marketing options don’t hesitate to call.
