Forbes Phoenix

Our Gal – Jenny Sullivan

May 8, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve lived here my whole life and it’s the most beautiful town in Australia. I love it, I always tell people that.

What was your first job? Working with children, I’ve done that all my life. I’ve been a special education teacher’s aide for 26 years

What makes you laugh the most? The team I work with at school.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I don’t know, never thought of that but I’d probably spend more time with grandchildren and do more volunteer work.

Describe your dream holiday? Either Hawaii or Port Douglas.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Going to the trots with Mum and Dad and my sisters to race horses.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I’d just keep things as they are living in the time and place I am in now.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My twin sister Angie and my Mum and Dad.

How can we spoil mothers this Mother’s Day?

Vicki Dick: Just being present is enough to show love and gratitude.

Nina Crawford: A nice bottle of wine and a selection of cheeses.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived here all my life. It’s a strong little country community town, with a great golf course.

What was your first job? I worked with my father in the Shell fuel depot.

What makes you laugh the most? A good joke with friends.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? Travel the world and watch every major sporting event in the world.

Describe your dream holiday? Spending weeks and weeks with my grandson.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Saint George winning the ‘77 Grand Final.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? Now, I could not change it or make it any better.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My grandson, table one and family.

As a business owner, what are some positives you have taken away from operating in lockdown?

April 24, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Moana Duggan from Lakeside Takeaway: It has forced us to budget more, consider where our income comes from in terms of sales. While our lifestyle hasn’t changed too much, seeing our customers each day has kept us balanced and sane and vice versa. It has been great to see customers from different situations, like those home-schooling and enjoying it, and not enjoying it, farmers who are celebrating the rain we’ve had, those who have lost work, come together (at a social distance) to talk and form new friendships on their morning coffee run. There is a real sense of community and of being in this together.

Janet Callaghan from Painted Daisies Gift Shoppe: It has given me the chance to put more effort into my business online. I never would have done it otherwise. I think our locals also realise that times are tough, and they are shopping. We don’t get visitors anymore so local support is more important than ever.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? We have been in Forbes for 11 and a half years now. I like the small, quiet, country town.

What was your first job? I was working as a legionnaires and water tester, a long time ago.

What makes you laugh the most? My kids.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? Spend every day like it was an adventure.

Describe your dream holiday? A nice long road trip all around Australia, stopping any and everywhere.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Hanging out with my cousins on the farm.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I would still live in Australia, but in the early colonial days. I would like to see it for myself.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My Father, my Grandmother and Great Grandmother West.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I am a born and bred Forbian. I love the river and country living lifestyle.

What was your first job? I was a paperboy with Nock’s Newsagency when I was 10 years old.

What makes you laugh the most? Good humour and my own jokes.

If money was no object, what would you do with your time? I’d camp, hunt, fish and travel.

Describe your dream holiday? The Maldives for sure.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? World Expo in Brisbane, 1988.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I’d live in the 1930’s, the mafia and gangster world back then.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My dad, my mum and my son Beau.

Have the rules on social-distancing and lockdown been made clear enough?

April 17, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Umima Austral: Yes and no. I think the rules outside are clear but there is still some confusion with rules around the household and visitors.

Sienna Sukkar: No, not initially anyway. I think Scott Morrison delivered a confusing series of press conferences but thanks to the media, no one really has an excuse not to know what the rules are, unless they live under a stone.
