New Doctor Training Scheme To Boost Bush GP Numbers By 400: Up to 400 general practitioners will train to work in regional Australia over the next four years, with the establishment today of the Coalition Government’s Rural Generalist Training Scheme (RGTS) to boost doctor numbers in the bush.

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) will deliver the Government-funded $49.7 million program, with ACRRM providing up to 100 Rural Generalist GP training places each year.

Federal Regional Health Minister, Mark Coulton said the end goal of the RGTS is for patients to have increased access to primary health services in rural and remote communities.

“Rural and remote communities want safe and high quality primary healthcare services delivered by well-trained GPs with training in an extended rural skill set,” Minister Coulton said. “Our Government is committed to making this happen by continuing to build the rural medical training pipeline.”

“I want to acknowledge ACRRM’s hard work over the past twelve months to bring this program to fruition for aspiring rural generalists. By providing more rural training places, we will open more GPs’ eyes to the significant benefits of being a rural generalist and living in a regional community.” Minister Coulton said rural generalist GPs are critical to the delivery of healthcare in rural and remote communities, and their specialist skills and training allow them to provide medical care in a wider range of circumstances.

PLANNING THE FUTURE: Wiradjuri Council of Elders recently met in Parkes to discuss ways to better manage water and the next generation of elders.

Wiradjuri Council Of Elders Meet In Parkes: Last Friday and Saturday saw the first meeting for some time of the Wiradjuri Council of Elders in Parkes.

This is not the first collaboration between Parkes Shire and Wiradjuri Elders though one of the first since COVID. Zoom link was trialled successfully and connected Elders from Lithgow Associates of Wiradjuri.

Mayor Ken Keith OAM was on hand to welcome the Elders as discussions held throughout the meeting ranged from water management to emerging Elders.

The boundary of the Wiradjuri Nation extends from Coonabarabran in the north, straddling the Great Dividing Range down to the Murray River and out to western NSW.

Wiradjuri traditional country includes the townships of Dubbo, Condobolin, Orange, Bathurst, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Narrand-era, and Griffith.

The Wiradjuri Council of Elders is comprised of Elders from all over Wiradjuri Country and had their first meeting in 1989 and hopefully will continue well into the future.

30 Years of Service Celebrated: Last week Forbes Shire Council celebrated 30 Years of service with the Forbes Railway Arts committee. “I would like to thank all the amazing volunteers we have had at the Railway Station Arts and Tourist In-formation Centre over the last 30 years,” said Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM. “Such an amazing milestone to reach and we at Council appreciate your dedication and service to the community over those three decades.

“I would like to pay special tribute to our life members; Pearl Maguire, Merle Churchill and Anne Nixon who attended last Wednesday. You all were at the inaugural meeting on 18 June 1990 at the Forbes Golf Club,” continues Mayor Miller.

“Danie Doolan, the driving force and dedicated founding member, must also be acknowledged. Without her initial push the Forbes Railway Arts & Tourist Centre committee would not have come to fruition.

“We must also not forget Judith Taylor and Lyn Simmonds who also have been working at the centre for 30 years,” continues Mayor Miller.

In total the Railway Station Arts and Tour-ism Information committee has had a total of 111 members over the thirty years. Currently the committee are non-committal on the future for the Railway Arts committee as COVID-19 has changed the circumstances in which they operate.

FREE CUPPAS: The Free Cuppa initiative has been a success with fatigue-related crashes more recently falling by 19% across NSW.

100 Businesses Join Forces to Reduce Driver Fatigue Crashes on NSW Roads: The ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme has been running for 11 years. This year 17 local businesses in the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Council areas have put their hands up to help fight driver fatigue and reduce our road toll by offering free cuppas to tired drivers.

Our local businesses will join over 100 businesses across regional areas of NSW to participate in the next phase of the successful ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme, which runs annually from 1 March to 31 May. Participating businesses will be encouraging drivers to take regular breaks by offering a free cup of tea or coffee to any driver who is more than 100kms away from home.

Since 2010, over 25,000 free cuppas have been given away. During that time, across NSW fatigue-related crashes have fallen by 19%. Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that the second biggest killer on NSW roads is drivers who are tired.

‘Free Cuppas’ are available from a broad range of businesses with varied opening hours, making regular breaks and free cuppas more accessible than ever.

“If it wasn’t for the participating businesses supplying the ‘free cuppa’, then this scheme wouldn’t be possible. I would like to thank the 17 enthusiastic businesses across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Council areas who are taking part in this year’s scheme,” Ms Suitor said.

The local participating businesses for 2021 are: Commercial Hotel, Forbes Bakehouse, Forbes Inn Hotel Motel, Isabel’s Place, Shell Forbes and Subway Forbes.

The ‘Free Cuppa’ website, freecuppa.com.au, allows drivers to search for the nearest participating business as well as find useful information on the scheme. There is also an active Facebook page that will keep you up to date on the scheme and the participating businesses.

Peewee Pete Ruffles Feathers At Library: You could be forgiven for thinking it was a Hitchcock film but for a brief moment it’s exactly how it appeared as a wayward magpie-lark (peewee) flew off-course and ventured into the Forbes Library.

“The young bird must have felt the library was a suitable place to roost for he proceeded to take refuge way out of reach on top of the window blinds in the high-ceilinged computer room, ignoring all entreaties for him to vacate the building,” explained Bronwyn Clark, Forbes branch librarian exclusively to the Phoenix.

A phone call to the Forbes Council soon saw the Rangers arrive on the scene then patiently persevered until finally Peewee Pete, was out manoeuvred by Ranger Mat Wallis, who in the end caught young Pete and then gently carried him out and released him back into the park to join his friends. “A big thanks to the rangers for all their help in the safe capture and release of our friend.”

Forbes Council Ranger Mat Wallis remains valiantly undaunted in his quest to net the library’s wayward feathered visitor Peewee Pete.
