Virtual Pharmacy Research Supporting Local Health

July 3, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Cristen Fleming, Lead Virtual Pharmacist.

A research project in eight hospitals is being used to examine how telehealth technology can connect local staff to pharmacy experts to help improve safety and outcomes for patients.

Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) Rural Director of Medical Services, Dr Shannon Nott, said, “The Virtual Clinical Pharmacy Service is part of a research project that aims to improve the use of medications for patients at hospitals without an onsite hospital pharmacist.”

Using telehealth, local healthcare teams work with ‘virtual pharmacists’ to review each patient’s medications, provide advice and make recommendations.

The introduction of the Virtual Clinical Pharmacy Service has drawn strong support from rural hospitals, who see early benefits for their patients.

The eight sites, six from WNSWLHD and two from FWLHD taking part in the project are, Balranald MPS, Bourke MPS, Canowindra Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Cobar Hospital, Gilgandra MPS, Narromine Hospital, Warren MPS and Wentworth MPS.

The project will finish in June 2021, with the results used to guide any future expansion.

National Approach To Managing Wild Dog Scourge

July 3, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Australia’s new blueprint for humane, best practice wild dog management officially took effect from 1 July.

Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud praised the way government and industry stakeholders collaborated on the new National Wild Dog Action Plan.

“Wild dogs are terribly destructive pests, costing farmers conservatively upwards of $89 million a year in lost production and control costs,” David said. “They can decimate livestock, tearing down sheep and goats at will, and in doing so, can hurt rural and regional economies because of the destruction they wreak and anxiety they cause.”

Having a clear, coordinated and borderless national plan to guide farmers and other stakeholders on the best strategies and safest tools for livestock and biodiversity protection is critical for rural and regional communities as they recover from COVID-19, bushfires and drought.

David applauded the way producers, peak farming bodies, governments and research and development corporations came together to ensure control measures are evidence-based and best practice. “Wild dog management is an Australian Government priority, with over $54 million invested in wild dog management since 2014-15, including recent wild dog fencing commitments in South Australia and Western Australia,” he said.

“The National Wild Dog Action Plan has already proved an exemplar in the way we should be approaching Australian predator management.”

The National Biosecurity Committee endorsed the National Wild Dog Action Plan 2020-2030 as the national plan for the co-ordinated management of wild dogs on 11 March 2020.

Tree Change Makes Population Boom Out West

June 26, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Children frolic in the snow at last year’s Frost and Fire Festival in Forbes, it is easy to see why families are choosing country living over city life.

In 2009 Moana Duggan, owner of Lakeside Takeaway, moved from Sydney to Forbes with her family. “We had been there for long enough, it was a 45 minute drive to school each day, out here it’s a slower lifestyle and it has been really good for the kids,” she said.

Moana’s sentiments are shared by tens of thousands of Australians who moved to regional towns from cities, in fact, 65,000 more people chose to move to regional Australia from capital cities than the other way around, according to a new Regional Australia Institute (RAI) report tracking population movements between 2011 and 2016.

While it wouldn’t be far-fetched to asume it is retirees making up for the bulk of those who have made the switch from city to country, Minister for Population Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said, “It’s also great to see the trend of millennials moving to regional areas, given so often they can spark life and vitality in these communities by becoming long-term community members.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said The Big Movers: Understanding Population Mobility in Regional Australia report showed more and more Australians were attracted to the lifestyle benefits of regional towns.

“Regional Australia is a great place to live and work and the Liberal and Nationals Government will continue to invest in the success and liveability of our regions to ensure it stays that way,” Michael said.

Delay The Spray-Clethodim Advice

June 26, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Grain growers are reminded they should avoid spraying annual ryegrass with clethodim herbicide when frost is forecast.

Weed control experts are advising growers not to spray clethodim two to three days before or after a frost event due to the impact on efficiency. The poor performance of clethodim on annual ryegrass, a weed becoming increasingly resistant to clethodim, can be associated with cold and frosty conditions.

University of Adelaide Associate Professor in weed and crop ecology, Dr Gurjeet Gill, says frosty conditions make it even harder to control annual ryegrass when clethodim resistance is present in the population.

“Growers are advised to carefully review weather forecasts for their district and spray clethodim when cloud cover is present and the risk of frost occurrence is low,” Gurjeet says.

Clethodim resistance has been slowly increasing in the northern region with current testing indicating resistance through New South Wales is less than 10 per cent.

This message is particularly pertinent to Forbes, which is prone to frost at this time of year, when many canola and pulse crops are likely to be sprayed for ryegrass control.

VERTO Awarded Five-Star Rating

June 26, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

VERTO Chief Operating Officer Alyssa Bennett (left) and Employment Services Manager Peta Skinner celebrate VERTO’s 5 Star Disability Services rating in Parkes.

Last week VERTO made the exciting announcement that its Lachlan Disability Employment Services team was awarded a five-star rating by the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services.

The Australian Government’s Disability Employment Service Program aims to assist people with illness, injury or disability to find and maintain employment. To gain a five-star rating, service providers are assessed on how successful they are in placing participants in sustainable, long-term employment or education. The star ratings system allows both employers and participants to help them chose the right service provider for them.

Ratings assess two of three performance indicators, the first of which measures the efficiency of a service provider, by looking at the average time it takes for providers to achieve employment outcomes for their participants. The second measures the effectiveness of service providers in how many outcomes are achieved for individual clients, including maintaining participants in employment where they may need assistance.

VERTO chief operating officer, Alyssa Bennett, said the Lachlan area, which includes four locations – Forbes, Parkes, West Wyalong and Condobolin – had received a five-star rating, the highest possible ranking from an independent Australian Government assessment.

“The VERTO Lachlan Disability Employment Services team does an outstanding job of assisting local job seekers to find and maintain employment,” Alyssa said.

“The five star rating is indicative of our commitment, dedication, and ongoing reliability in helping the Lachlan community, and ensures that those with illness, injury or disability looking for employment will have the chance to find and maintain meaningful work.”

New Mural For Forbes Skate Park

June 26, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Mural artist Nick Stuart was blown away by the awesome murals, sculptures and nature of Forbes.

As part of the ongoing and phenomenally successful calendar of youth activities in Forbes, the annual mural activity was planned for the April school holidays at the Forbes skate park. Due to COVID-19, the activity was postponed, and the children were unable to participate in painting the mural.

With the recent easing of restrictions, mural artist, Nick Stuart of Olas One in Newcastle, was in Forbes last week to paint the mural onto the face of the ramp at the Forbes skate park.

“It was unfortunate we couldn’t complete the mural with the children this year,” says Forbes Shire Council Manager Community and Tourism, Nina Hooper. “The kids really engage with projects such as these and the Coronavirus put a stop to us including them in this particular activity this year. Next mural we do will involve everyone.”

“Our Forbes Youth Action Team undertook a series of meetings to ensure the right location and the right type of mural subject was chosen to suit the space of the Skate Park. Consultation was also taken with the local schools to ensure the youth of Forbes were on board with the project. The children all wanted the artwork to be visible and appreciated by the rest of the community.”

Nick has quite a few skatepark murals under his belt and was looking forward to getting the youth of Forbes involved in painting, “I designed the mural in a way that has a fun and carefree feel to it so that the kids would be keen to get involved, unfortunately I couldn’t hold the workshop but I’m really happy to be here,” Nick said.

The giant mural was painted at the skate park from Tuesday, 16 June through to Friday, 19 June with an anti-graffiti sealant applied over the weekend to ensure the longevity of the piece.
