Be Seen On Race Day With Danielle Mcdonald

July 11, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Danielle’s first senior Hattah race was a tough one, but after 5 long hours on the bike she managed to go P2 in class and 76th outright of 432 riders.

First ever senior Hattah prologue done. P1 in women’s, P63 outright. This is one of Danielle’s favourite races of the year.

Tough day for round 2 of @auspromx in Murray Bridge. A few bad starts put Danielle back but she was still happy to go 4-4 for a P4 OA.

Forbes Parents The Focus Of Information Night

July 11, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The free event will be held at Flannery’s Pharmacy Tuesday, July 16 and is designed to help local parents connect with others in the community while gaining valuable insight from a panel of health experts.

Dietary, first aid, and physical and developmental health will be among the topics discussed at an upcoming parent information evening in Forbes.

The free event will be held at Flannery’s Pharmacy Tuesday, 16th July and is designed to help local parents connect with others in the community while gaining valuable insight from a panel of health experts.

“This event came about because we saw a need to support new parents, and young families, in the Central West,” Pharmacist in Charge at Flannery’s Forbes, Kate French, said.

“Sometimes it can feel very isolating living in a regional centre, particularly in the early stages of parenthood, and we want to offer access to healthcare experts in a secure, comfortable environment, to ensure parents and carers of all stages feel welcome and supported.”

Among guest speakers will be registered nurse Inez Denham, Paediatric Physiotherapist Zoe Tyack and Naturopath Alice Flannery.

Winter warmer refreshments will be available on the evening from Donna’s Table, there will be raffle prizes to be won and each attendee will also receive a gift bag containing information, a book for your child and more goodies.

“This session will cover a range of topics from medication information to promoting self-care, as well as access to expert advice and local resources,” Kate said.

“As pharmacists, we have many conversations with patients about how to cope with the various stages of parenting. This event allows locals to ask more questions from a variety of healthcare professionals.”

Register online at: www.eventbrite.com/e/flannerys-pharmacy-parent-information-night-tickets-929448344017.

Naturopath Alice Flannery will also be hosting a pop-up Naturopathy clinic ahead of the event, with a focus on women’s health and fertility, gut health, fatigue, as well as preconception, pregnancy and postpartum support. Re-fenced And Rejoicing

July 11, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Urban Services team members Sue Ramsay, Greg Ridge and Mark Noakes drilling post holes for Grinsted Oval picket fence replacement.

The iconic white picket fence has returned to South Circle and Grinsted Rugby Union Ovals in Forbes with a custom hinged drop system to minimise future floods impact.

The Urban Services team has devised a poly hinged rod at the base of the fence which can enable it to be easily flattened in flood preparation. Constructed from a durable plastic composition, the pickets and structure mostly survived the last flood which reached depths of 2.5 metres over the site.

However, in the next flood, the fence panels can be laid flat on the ground and possibly secured with pegs in times of a strong water current.

In between other flood recovery efforts and business as usual, Council’s Urban Services Crew has been removing damaged pickets and rebuilding new panel sections to rebuild the fence. Existing panels are being cleaned with finials (tops of pickets) being secured and glued. This has been a major cost (and waste) saving measure rather than just replacing the new fence entirely.

Minimal new fence panels were required to be purchased.

The newly refurbished fence is now almost complete and has the ovals returning to their former glory with a new custom flood proof inclusion.

Patrick Murphy from Forbes Shire Council Urban Services Team has been salvaging pickets and making up new panels to replace the iconic white picket fence around Grinsted and South Circle Ovals.

Local And International Artists Spreading The Word

July 4, 2024 by Roxane Manley

IMAGE: Section of The Australia/Philippines Friendship Mural with images of the Australian wedge-tailed eagle and the Philippines national eagle.

The powerful Wiradjuri word Yindyamarra, meaning deep respect, was chosen as title of a 30m wide x 4m high mural in the Philippines.

The Australian Embassy in the Philippines commissioned the Baguio City (Phil)-Australia Friendship Mural to celebrate the strong ties between the two countries and to highlight the culture of First Nations peoples. At the official opening of the mural was the original Ub Ubbo Exchange song Echoes, which was produced by Parkes man Jason Murchie.

Sean James Cassidy, Director of Ub Ubbo Exchange Australian Chapter, helped develop the connections for this project. In a letter to Cassidy, the Australian Ambassador HK Yu in the Philippines wrote, “I am pleased to have learnt about your continuing work with Lope Bosaing on Ub Ubbo Exchange. The Ambassador also extended her respect and special thanks to Wiradjuri Elders Robert Clegg and Geoff Anderson and indigenous artist and mentor Irene Ridgeway, for their invaluable contribution to this mural.”

Ub Ubbo Exchange has worked to promote indigenous and non-indigenous collaborations through the arts. Their philosophy of diverse cultural energies growing through mutual empowerment has been embodied in cultural exchanges, particularly between regional Australia and northern Philippines.

“It is great that we can work with people we might never meet for the benefit of people yet to be born,” said Geoff Anderson, president of the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group.

“Having this mural named Yindyamarra is a wonderful thing to happen for the Wiradjuri people.”

Mayoral Notes

July 4, 2024 by Phyllis Miller OAM

Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM (at last week’s Council meeting) presents Forbes Historical Society president Bruce Adams with portrait of QEII as her portrait has been replaced with a pic of the King.

We were very pleased to meet with NSW Health Minister the Honourable Ryan Park at the Forbes District Hospital on Wednesday.

We lobbied hard for a new operating theatre at the hospital, detailing to the Minister our community’s commitment to support medical professionals in our town.

Forbes Shire Council has a strong history of working with and supporting NSW Health to improve our health services since the 1990s.

Council has long standing initiatives in place to secure and welcome doctors including accommodation support, a major upgrade of the medical practice and medical precinct, offering a work life balance and ongoing professional development opportunities.

We currently offer day surgery, ENT and other specialty surgeries as well as full obstetrics services for the Forbes and surrounding communities including West Wyalong, Condobolin, Grenfell, Eugowa, Canowindra, Parkes and Trundle.

We need to continue these vital services, reducing the demand on Orange and other base hospitals. A new operating suite could also reduce the need for more minor surgical procedures being performed out of town, giving GPs and patients continuity of care we have worked so hard to maintain for over 30 years.

Thank you to Minister Park for taking the time in his busy schedule to meet with us to discuss this crucial service for our hospital.

God Bless
Phyllis Miller OAM
