Bob And Anne’s Unforgettable Meeting With Priscilla Presley

January 7, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Parkes Elvis Festival Founders Bob and Anne Steel pictured in a private sit down with the one and only Priscilla Presley.

In November last year, Parkes Elvis Festival founders Bob and Anne Steel had the privilege of a one-on-one meeting with Priscilla Presley, at the State Theatre in Sydney prior to her show “Life After Elvis.”

Bob said, “I thought she was very approachable and I quite enjoyed being with her.” We asked Bob if hugging Priscilla was allowed, but he assured us, “Oh no, she hugged me.”

Anne laughed when recalling Bob said to Priscilla, “Give me your hand,” to which Priscilla asked why? Bob simply told her, “Because I want to hold it.”

What did they chat abut with Priscilla? “She talked about Elvis’ popularity. She’s very aware of the Parkes Elvis Festival, she knows it, and she’s over the moon that we’ve done it,” said Bob.

Bob and Anne’s daughter Tiffany told Priscilla they would love to have her at the Parkes Elvis Festival. There was some family debate as to her response to the invitation, with both Tiffany and Anne claiming Priscilla said, “You never know,” while Bob is adamant she said “Never say never!” It was agreed to let Bob have the last word on this one.

After her star encounter, while waiting for the others at bottom of the stairs of the theatre, Anne smiled at those who seemed to recognise her. People started approaching her, to share their own stories of the Parkes Elvis Festival, further proving its appeal.

12 Days Of Double Demerits For The Christmas Holidays

December 18, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Acting Sergeant Joshua Tolley who said “There will be more Police on the roads which means a greater chance of drivers being caught if they are doing the wrong thing.”

Double demerit points will be in force for 12 consecutive days over the Christmas and New Year period to improve road safety during the holiday season.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that double demerit points would run from Wednesday 24 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, inclusive for all speeding, seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences.

Ms Suitor said “Drivers should ensure that they are well rested and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol before they get behind the wheel. While driving, focus on driving. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by your mobile phone, follow the road rules and drive at a speed suitable to conditions.

And please make sure that you and your passengers are buckled up.

“Drivers should also check that their vehicle is ready for the journey too – check the brakes and tyres, check the levels of your engine oil, coolant and windscreen washer reservoir, make sure all your lights and indicators are working and ensure you have clear view,” Ms Suitor said.

Parkes Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Joshua Tolley is warning drivers that they are at greatest risk of losing their licence during this period. “Too often we see the tragic aftermath of drivers making poor decisions. No-one wants to get a fine, lose their licence or worse still be involved in a crash.

Mayoral Notes

December 18, 2025 by Mayor Phyllis Miller

The final touches are nearing completion on Johnny Woods Crossing. The extension of the footpath, connecting the new section with the existing pathway, creates a seamless link for walkers, runners and cyclists to enjoy.

Funded through the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Fund, the redevelopment has enhanced pedestrian access and safety, as well as improved flood resilience.

I’m excited to share that the Lions Park playground reopened on Saturday, just in time for the school holidays. A huge thank you to our Projects Team for planning, delivering, and testing the new equipment to ensure everything was ready for families to enjoy.

This upgrade was part of the Forbes Lake Activation Parks and Amenities Resilience & Betterment Project, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Community Assets Program.

Council has recently seen a rise in nonflushable items entering the sewer network. Items like baby wipes and “flushable” wipes, sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds, and even cutlery and sprinkler heads have been causing serious blockages.

These items lead to costly repairs and increased staff exposure to raw sewage when manually clearing the blockages.

Please help us keep the sewer network running smoothly by only flushing the three P’s – pee, poo, and toilet paper. Everything else belongs in the bin.

There will be a number of changes to Council’s operations heading into the festive season.

Forbes Waste Facility will be closed on Christmas Day. If your usual roadside bin collection day is Thursday, please place your bins out on Christmas Eve. The drivers will start extra early on Christmas morning to complete their rounds so that they can spend the remainder of the day with their families.

Forbes Visitor Information Centre will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Council’s Administration Office will close from midday on Christmas Eve and reopen at 8:30am, Monday 5 January 2026.

Essential services will continue to operate during this period. We wish everyone a safe, happy, and relaxing festive season!

God Bless
Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM

Wild Summer Fun At Taronga Western Plains Zoo

December 18, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Did you know that Toronga is a not-for-profit and every dollar you spend helps save wildlife. What are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to Taronga Western Plains Zoo this holidays

New arrivals are making a splash at Taronga Western Plains Zoo – NSW’s Best Major Tourist Attraction – this summer. The Dubbo Zoo, which claimed the gong at the recent NSW Tourism Awards, has welcomed four Black-handed Spider Monkey babies, three African Lion cubs, two Quokka joeys and a critically endangered Scimitar-horned Oryx calf this year.

“Lion cubs Kaari, Mzuri and Nguvu have turned into quite the handful for parents Marion and Lwazi as well as their four big sisters,” said Director Steve Hinks. “They love playing with and pouncing on their siblings, as well as anything they find in their exhibit from balls to sticks and even tree roots!” The best time to see the cubs is between 10am and 10:30am.

The Black-handed Spider Monkey troop has welcomed four new arrivals to the Primate Islands on Savannah Lake, and the awesome foursome can be spotted from Cafe Wild. The best time to see the troop is at the Spider Monkey feed between 12:30pm and 1pm daily.

The final new arrival is a Scimitar-horned Oryx calf. “This calf is a fantastic little ambassador for his species, which is a true conservation success story. Once extinct in the wild, Scimitar-horned Oryx were reintroduced to their native Chad by a coalition of zoos from the USA and Europe in recent years and have since been reclassified as critically endangered,” Mr Hinks said.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is open every day of the year including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. All tickets are valid for two days and include access to more than 10 free keeper activities, The Waterhole waterplay area, Waterhole Cafe and Frozen Coke Kiosk between 10am and 3pm. You can buy tickets online at taronga.org.au

Meals On Wheels Parkes And Forbes Donate 220 Meals That Matter

December 18, 2025 by Roxane Manley

When local families are forced to travel for medical care, something as simple as a hot meal can make an overwhelming time easier. A local fundraising effort by Meals on Wheels Parkes and Forbes has resulted in more than 220 meals being provided to Ronald McDonald House Orange.

The idea for the fundraiser came from a conversation about how often people from the Parkes and Forbes communities rely on Ronald McDonald House Orange when travelling for medical care.

Similar to Meals on Wheels services, the house relies heavily on volunteers and community support to help provide meals for those staying there.

Recognising the shared values between the two services, Jamie Webb and Carolyn Rice from Meals on Wheels Parkes and Forbes proposed a simple but meaningful way to help — inviting Meals on Wheels clients and volunteers to donate the cost of just one meal to help fill the house’s freezers in the lead-up to Christmas.

Running throughout October, the initiative raised $1,780, which directly funded more than 220 meals. These meals will help ease daily pressures for families who are often far from home, supporting loved ones through

illness.

On 15 December, Jamie Webb and Carolyn Rice visited Ronald McDonald House Orange, where they met with Rebecca Walsh, Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Charities Central West NSW, to witness the arrival of the first delivery of meals.

The meals were kindly delivered by Sarah Thomas, Manager of Bathurst Meals on

Wheels, who generously supported the initiative and will continue supplying meals as required by the house.

A tour of the facility provided an opportunity to share stories, experiences, and the strong sense of community that underpins all three services.

This fundraiser shows how small ideas supported by local communities can make a real difference during difficult times.

Keen Contest For Prizes

December 18, 2025 by Short Putt

Pat Murphy, Harry Callaghan, Jade Page and Cam McMillan enjoying their early start at golf.

Last weekends Mens competition was an Individual Stableford sponsored by Woolworths Forbes, who provided hams for the winners. The field of 58 were keen to get their game in early to avoid the forecast thunderstorms with only a few groups caught in the conditions and a handful not finishing their rounds. The prizes on offer were great.

The Div-1 winner was Dave Mylecharane who was well ahead on his 40 points. He credits most of his success to a new driver setting which aided his hot back-9 scoring.

Runner-up was Anthony Alley with 38 points. He matched Dave with his back-9 score but was a bit untidy on the front-9.

The Div-2 needed a count back between four players to decide the winner after they all finished on 34 points. The nod went to Matt Duff who managed 18 points on the back-9 after an indifferent run of 1-pointers to start his round.

The Div-2 runner-up was Alex Mackinnon. He had an even round with 17 points on each half, which also include two ‘misses’ on each half although he finished the back-9 strongly.

The NTPs went to: 9th A Dukes; 18th L

O’Connor. The 3rd hole Super pin went to Paul Kay whose shot looked ‘miles away’ at 440 cm on a green that was hard to hit.

This Saturday, 20 December, is an Individual Stableford, sponsored by Forbes

Central Butchers. There is also a Stableford Medley on Sunday 21 December.

The Forbes Golf Club wishes all players a happy and safe Festive Season.

Town Hall Christmas Projection Returns With A New Festive Story

December 11, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller pictured on Monday evening in front of Forbes Town hall Christmas Projection which has become a cherished part of the festive season in Forbes.

The much-loved Forbes Town Hall Christmas Projection is once again illuminating the local Landmark, and this year’s projection has debuted a heartwarming new story titled, ‘Nedd and the Late Santa Letter’.Each year in Forbes, children write letters to Santa and post them through the North Pole Mail Express. These treasured messages are collected at Forbes Shire Council and whisked away on their magical journey to the North Pole.

But this year, one special letter has been accidentally left behind, and it’s up to someone truly extraordinary to get it to Santa before Christmas Eve.

The 2025 projection is voiced by members of the Forbes Youth Action Team (FYAT) and features real letters written by local children, making this one of the most personal and engaging Christmas projections ever showcased on the historic Town Hall façade.

Mayor Phyllis Miller said, “For four years, families have gathered in the heart of town to enjoy this magical storytelling experience. We’re thrilled to bring a new chapter to life while also featuring the creativity and Christmas wishes of our youngest residents,” the Mayor said.

Created by lighting artist Stephan de Wit, the projection will run nightly, 8.30pm until 11.30pm from Monday 8 December through to Boxing Day.

The narration will be broadcast locally on FM 88.7 so be sure to tune in via your car radio to enjoy the full audio-visual experience of lights, colours and the magical Christmas story.
