New Investment To Deliver Exciting Opportunities For Young People In Parkes Shire

June 25, 2026 by Roxane Manley

(L-R) Parkes Shire Council’s Director Planning & Community Services Annalise Teale, and Deputy Mayor Marg Applbee. Representing Evolution Mining – Northparkes Operations were Processing Manager Mitch Garside, and Communications and Engagement Superintendent Brooke Plunkett.

A significant new investment in the future of young people across the Parkes Shire has been announced, with Evolution Mining Northparkes Operations and Parkes Shire Council partnering to deliver a new Youth Officer position.

The new part-time position, established for an initial three-year term, represents a major commitment to strengthening youth engagement, participation, wellbeing and opportunities across the entire Parkes Shire.

Funded by Northparkes Operations and managed by Parkes Shire Council, the role has been designed to provide a coordinated and flexible approach to supporting young people, responding directly to community feedback that identified youth activities and mental health as key priorities.

The Youth Officer will work closely with young people, schools, community organisations, sporting clubs, and service providers to create meaningful opportunities for youth engagement, leadership development and social connection.

Parkes Shire Deputy Mayor Marg Applebee said the new position will play an important role in ensuring young people have a stronger voice in shaping the future of their communities.

The role will support youth-focused programs and events, coordinate activities through Council facilities and community venues, establish partnerships across the region and deliver outreach initiatives to smaller communities throughout the Shire.

Importantly, the position has been designed with flexibility in mind, recognising that effective youth engagement often occurs outside traditional business hours.

Council is now preparing to advertise the position and is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative and community-minded individual who can help make the role truly exceptional.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to help guide the program from the ground up, develop strong community partnerships and create lasting outcomes that support young people across the Parkes Shire.

The Div-2 was won by Cody Banks with 71 nett. He also needed 9-holes to warm up, but after that played very well until the last.

Runner-up was Steve Rogers with 72 nett.

The ball sweep went to 78 nett on count back. NTPs went to: 9th N Duncan, 18th P Dawson with neither converting for a ‘2’. A Cross-Cultural Yarn Between Two Central West Creatives

June 18, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Toby Finlayson and Sean James Cassidy stand in front of the mural Yindyamarra — a Wiradjuri word meaning “deep respect” — in Baguio Northern Philippines. The mural was named in recognition of the cultural exchange and ongoing support the region has received from Central West creatives such as Finlayson and Cassidy.

A cross-cultural creative dialogue is emerging between Sean James Cassidy, Parkesbased artist and director of UB UBBO EXCHANGE, and Toby Finlayson, Forbes-born co-founder and CEO of Desert Pea Media (DPM), grounded in a shared belief that storytelling can strengthen identity, preserve culture, and create pathways for healing within communities.

Finlayson is widely respected throughout the Central West for his long-standing commitment to preserving First Nations culture through music, film, and digital storytelling.

Cassidy’s Ub Ubbo Exchange has built a strong reputation for supporting emerging artists and musicians, creating pathways for regional creatives to connect with established national and international talent.

The pair recently travelled together to the Philippines for a cultural exchange, reconnecting creatively for the first time since collaborating there in 2012 on a music and arts project. During the visit, Cassidy and Finlayson met with First Nations tribal communities to explore opportunities for future cultural exchange programs and community-engaged arts initiatives throughout Asia and the South Pacific.

Now, the collaboration is moving into a new phase. Cassidy and Finlayson are currently developing a pilot video project designed to spark broader conversations around preserving culture through arts and music engagement. The project ties into internationally recognised cultural celebrations including International Mother Language Day on February 21 and Australia–Philippines Friendship Day on May 22.

For Cassidy and Finlayson, they describe the process as a “yarn” — an ongoing conversation shaped by trust, deep listening, and mutual respect.

History Of The Parkes Camera Club

June 18, 2026 by Roxane Manley

Members of the Parkes Camera Club in the 1960’s.

The Parkes Camera Club traces its beginnings back to 1958, when Alan Steel and Jim Watts each purchased their own cameras, a Yashica 35mm and a Kodak 35mm, respectively. As they began comparing notes and experimenting with photography, they recognised there may be others in the community interested in developing their skills and formed a photographic group.

In 1959, the Methodist Church Trust offered the group the use of meeting rooms in Court Street, on the condition that the club operate under the name “The Methodist Camera Club.” Under this banner, the club staged the very first Parkes National Photographic Exhibition in March 1960.

Following the success of the inaugural exhibition, members voted to rename the organisation the Parkes Photographic Society. Early members included President Don McAlpine, who later became a world-renowned cinematographer, Vice Presidents Herb Pollock and Ken Field, Secretary Alan Steel, Treasurer Alan Bennett, along with 20 other club members.

The club’s new meeting place was the old library meeting rooms in Currajong St. The club continued to meet there until the end of 1986. In January 1987, the club moved to the Parkes Neighbourhood Centre in Currajong Street, where it still proudly meets twice a month today. Ipomoea members want to share in an informal way why they enjoy Rotary and community service and what that looks like for them in an informal setting, just a chat and light refreshments. Wine and finger food will be provided to ensure a pleasant and informal atmosphere.

The Rotary Club of Forbes Ipomoea currently has 14 members and Friends of Rotary and always welcome and encourage new members.
