Magpies Name Coaches, Signings

December 3, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

GROUP MERGER TALK: Group 11 and 10 have been having ongoing discussions regarding a proposed merged group in a bid to make competition stronger and games more competitive. Players like Charlie Staines (pictured) have benefited from strong group competition however a new league would help junior players immeasurably. Pic courtesy of NRL.com

The Forbes Magpies are gearing up for a big 2022 season with coaches and signings named over the past week as well as discussion surrounding the inevitability that Group 11 and 10 may come together sooner rather than later.

Former Forbes Magpies premiership winning captain Jake Grace is set to return as well as “95 per cent of talent from 2021” and the addition of kiwi stars Dawson Nanai and Alvin Maungaati (both Ron Massey Cup players with Western Suburbs Magpies) also joining the Forbes Magpie nest suddenly makes 2022 look vastly different.

Both Nanai and Maungaati are currently contracted playing European rugby and will finish there before they return to Australia for the new league season.

In other news, the club looks in great hands for the new year with Cameron Greenhalgh at the helm for first grade while Andrew Burton will take charge of reserves and Ben Godden the 18s. Brad McMillan will take the U21s in a pre-season comp and Jared Demaniel will look after the ladies league tag squad.

While the club has been on the front foot with coaching appointments and signings and securing the future, talk over the past few weeks has centred around a combined competition between neighbouring Group 10 with Group 11. It is a concept the club has supported before in the right format and inevitably will be the preferred option to give the 18s and first grade more competition.

Games against Bathurst, Blayney and Orange would happen more regularly and the Magpies remain keen on the idea. Both groups remain a strong rugby league nursery for the NRL with players such as Joel Thompson, Charlie Staines, Matt Burton, Isaah Yeo and many more all coming from the region. It can only help the game in the bush.

WCG: A Larger Wyangala Dam Could Not Hold Back Current Flood

December 3, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

A media release from research undertaken by Wyangala Counterpoint Group (WCG) has claimed that the proposed larger Wyangala Dam would have filled and spilled in early October. The latest wet weather event generated a very large volume of rainfall runoff in the Upper Lachlan catchment that the proposed larger dam would not have held back.

The volume of inflows to Wyangala Dam would have filled the proposed additional 650 GL by early October. Dam releases would still have occurred at the same time the increased tributary inflows from the Belubula River, Boorowa River and other swollen water sources below the dam entered the Lachlan River upstream of Forbes.

“Up to 50% of the river flows causing flooding at Forbes have come from tributaries downstream of the dam,” Pennie Scott of WCG told the Phoenix.

Wyangala Counterpoint Group has analysed inflows to Wyangala Dam since it first filled in August and inflows to the Lachlan River from tributaries below the dam. This analysis is based on real time inflow reporting and river gauge readings available on the WaterNSW website.

“Wyangala Counterpoint Group would like to encourage thorough examination of the mixed messages and competing reasons for raising the dam wall to ensure an informed debate”.

Importantly, the dam will not be able to perform the competing purpose of flood mitigation while also guaranteeing increased water security for downstream water users. Increased water security requires a full dam while increased flood mitigation requires low levels in the dam. Other solutions are needed to solve problems on the downstream floodplain.

Bogan Gate 90 Year Dinner Date To Celebrate

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The Bogan Gate Branch of the Country Women’s Association celebrated 90 years this week with a fabulous luncheon at the revamped Bogan Gate Hotel.

During the occasion, Ros Edwards explained that the inaugural meeting was held at the home of Mrs W Black on 7th November, 1931. That meeting was opened by Miss Warby, State Treasurer.

“During the War years the members of CWA were called upon to do many extra tasks,” Ros said.

“For many months they ran a canteen for soldiers at the nearby Army Camp and almost every woman in Bogan Gate had a camouflage net on a stand and as soon as one was finished, another would be started. Most ladies knitted socks, pyjamas, khaki shirts and fruit cakes to include in comfort parcels which were packed once a month during the war years.”

Gail McKay explained to the group that in their 90 years they have awarded 13 Life Memberships, four 50-year badges, 33 Long Service Bars and had 16 junior members – an incredible feat!

Here’s to the next 90!

Play On: Further Government Funding To Boost Sport

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

In a real win for regional sport and the disability sports sector, a further $2.4 million will be delivered by the NSW Government to support the sports sector as it emerges from COVID restrictions, to help increase participation across the state.

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the Organisation Support Program (OSP) is on top of the recently-announced $25 million Sport and Recreation Recovery and Community Rebuild Package – a program that has already benefited locals.

“The COVID-19 lockdown has had a major impact on everyone’s lives, including our sport and recreation sector,” Mrs Ward said.

“We want to make sure all our sports lovers are getting back to doing what they love most across all codes, from cricket to football, netball to hockey, basketball to tennis,” she said.

“As restrictions ease, this funding package will help increase participation and improve community health and wellbeing at a time when it couldn’t be needed more.”

Ninety-four eligible State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) and State Sporting Organisations with a Disability (SSODs) will share in the ongoing funding package. It will support the sector in holding competitions, activities and programs across NSW as it returns to full operation following the restrictions and builds on the Sport and Recreation Recovery and Community Rebuild Package.

“The NSW Government’s comprehensive support will ensure sports don’t just get back on the fields, courts and pitches but have sustained success into the future,” Mrs Ward said.

This is big news locally as many sports groups have had little to no activity in 18 months. For further details, see: www.sport.nsw.gov.au/grants/organisation-support-program.

Disaster Assistance For Forbes

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes community devastated by flooding of the Lachlan River has been thrown an economic lifeline along with Cowra, with Member for Riverina Michael McCormack announcing disaster assistance is now available.

Mr McCormack said the assistance was targeted at Forbes and Cowra shire councils, residents, primary producers, small businesses and charities to help them recover from the severe weather event and flooding which occurred from Tuesday November 9th. Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth- State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Mr McCormack spent two days in Forbes this week as the Lachlan River overflowed its banks and has been in constant contact with Forbes Mayor, Councillor Phyllis Miller OAM, who welcomed news of the assistance package after the Lachlan River peaked at 10.53 metres Friday November 19 at Iron Bridge.

“I am so excited disaster assistance has been arranged as quickly as it has,” Mayor Miller said. “It’s tremendously important we have our Shire declared a natural disaster area because that helps our farming community, as well as our council and the general community.”

Floodwaters have inundated hundreds of hectares of crops around Cowra and Forbes. Mr McCormack repeated his calls for the dam wall to be raised 10 metres to hold a further 650 gigalitres of water.

“Increasing the capacity of Wyangala Dam will help prevent disasters,” Mr McCormack said.

The disaster assistance will help the Forbes and Cowra councils cover the costs associated with the operational response and repairing damaged essential public assets. Local residents will also receive support to get back on their feet, including grants to replace essential household contents or repair structural damage to homes.

Forbes Christmas Carnival Cancelled

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

LOTS DOING: Despite the cancellation of the Forbes Business Chamber Christmas Carnival there is a lot going on in Forbes this festive period including the Forbes Phoenix sponsored Elf In The Shop promotion. Keep an eye out for clues!

Sadly, the 2021 Forbes Christmas Carnival will not be going ahead. The Forbes Business Chamber last weekend made the announcement that it has no option but to cancel the date this year.

“The reallocation of another date is just not possible as that date would need to be after the 15th December while the 15th December date is still not confirmed and concrete,” said Marg Duggan, President of the Forbes Business Chamber.

“Under the current circumstances and COVID restrictions the Christmas Carnival is unable to go ahead in Templar and Rankin Streets. This is due to the mandatory requirement that fencing is erected at all entrances and must be manned throughout the evening. People who are not double-vaccinated are excluded from the event. This exclusion is not possible as within the cage area there are essential service businesses. These businesses include health such as pharmacy, dentist, butcher clothing and food services.” said Marg Duggan

The Chamber will be holding late night shopping evenings on the 9th and 16th December until 8pm and are hopeful local businesses will support these evenings. Those businesses that are located out of Rankin, Templar and Lachlan Streets are welcome to bring a table and display into the CBD for those evenings. The items can be sold or used as a promotion for your business.

Other activities will include the Elf In The Shop, sponsored by the Forbes Phoenix this year. Keep your eyes open for the clue sheet.

The prizes in this years’ promotion total $20,000 and $500 draws will be held on Thursday afternoons until December 23. The remaining draws are for December 24 – totalling $20,000.

The winning Why Leave Town Cards are valid until the 30th June, 2022 and are redeemable at a number of Forbes businesses.

“The Christmas Carnival will be back in 2022 no doubt!”

Boys To The Bush Help Out During Floods: In another outstanding initiative, Boys To The Bush, Nathan Corliss and some guys were on hand cooking a BBQ last week for hungry flood affected victims and volunteers. It was exactly what was needed at the time and didn’t go unnoticed. We are lucky to have such a tremendous organisation around these parts!

White Ribbon Event At Binaal Billa: Yesterday Binaal Billa held a White Ribbon Day event to acknowledge the pandemic of male driven domestic violence towards women. Currently, 1 in 6 women (1.6 million) have experienced physical violence or sexual violence by a current or previous partner since the age of 15. Sadly, one woman a week dies at the hands of a man known to her. Locally, Binaal Billa remains on the front foot and their efforts have been tremendous. Well done to Deb and the team.
