Marj Styles enjoyed her time in Forbes catching up with old friends and none other than Bruce Field.

It was another nice spring morning for Golf Croquet on Tuesday 10th October. We were able to sing Happy Birthday to Joan Littlejohn who will be 93 this week. Still up with the best, well done to Joan. Three players managed to win three games: John Cole, Alex Todd and Neville Spry. The big winners on the day were 9 – 4 Geoff Coles and Ray Burridge, Marie Spry and Alex Todd, John Browne and Bill Scott, Elvy Quirk and Robin Pols. Close games on the day were:

Congratulations to Cath Kelly and Patsy Christie and to Jake and David Ford (Not Pictured).

On Saturday the Nutrien 4BBB annual event was run and again thanks to one of our long term sponsors. There were 62 starters for this team’s event where the best score on the hole is totalled for the team. There was also an Individual event held in conjunction.

The winning combination were David Ford and Jake O’Brien who compiled a tidy 49 points. They combined well, with David pulling in 39 points and Jake 38 points. In the ladies event the pairing of Cath Kelly and Patsy Christie reigned supreme on the day, compiling 44 points.

In the Individual stakes, Max Keith on 42 points just got home in front of Wayne Tucker with 41 points and John Dwyer piling on the points for a 40. With the new track settling in, the fear is starting to dissipate, and golfers are coming to grips with it. Jake O’Brien shot a three over and Anthony Riach, Aaron, Wilkie and Max Keith all shot four overs.

The Nearest The Pins on Saturday were –The Idlerite 1st by Colleen Staples at 320cm, the Harvey Norman 11th by Chris Goodie at 320cm, the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th by Myles Smith at 190cm, the Harvey Norman 11th by Rod Kiley at 130 cm and the 18th by Col Breaden at 548cm. The lucrative 11th hole was won by Chris Goodie at 320cm this week.

Ball winners were Wayne Tucker 41, John Dwyer 40, Anthony Riach, John Pearce, Tom Delmenico 39, Ken Keith, Finne Latu 38, Jimmy Kuntze, Ron Hetherington 37. Captain Cath once again pummeled President David with the scores at 157 to 131

This week is the October Monthly Medal proudly presented by Telescope Tyres and Batteries / Hankook Masters with the daily sponsor being Peter Woods and Associates.

Medal Winners Score Well

On Saturday 30th September, the Mens golf competition was the October Monthly Medal, sponsored by Forbes Concrete. This event was played this weekend because of the Club Champs starting next week. The field of 63 enjoyed the conditions.

The A-Grade Winner was Chharlws Dwyer with a 69 nett. He played very well alongside Head Pro Will, finishing with a ‘2’. Runner-up was Brad Ashton with 71 nett. His overall good game was not rewarded.

The B-Grade went to Fons Melisi returning a 68 nett, despite three double-bogeys along the way. Runner-up was Jeff House (69 nett) who lost concentration on the back-9 and also lost the Keno.

The C-Grade provided the lowest score with Lachlan Alley carding 66 nett, and this after recovering from a broken arm. Runner-up was Frank Hanns with 71 nett, who beat off Ross Williams on count back.

The NTP’s went to: 9th John Betland; 18th Harry Callaghan. The Pro Shop Super-pin went to Niel Duncan with a shot to 1.0 metres, and he got his ‘2’. The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back.

The visitors included Steven Neal and Ed Cummins (Wentworth GC), and Scott Galloway (Trentham GC) from Victoria, here to meet his mates.

The Sunday Stableford 9-Hole Medley, played on the front-9, had 6 starters. They were all out early to beat the heat. The best score came from Mike Livingston with 22 points, and breaking a drought to be in the winner’s circle. Runner up was Brianna Duncan with 21 pts.

Monday had an 18-hole Individual Stableford Medley. There were 12 starters with Peter Dawson winning (38 pts). The ball sweep went to 35 pts on c/b. NTP’s went to Brett Thomas and Scott Galloway

This weekend we have the start of the Club Individual Championships.

The Push-Up Challenge Student Ambassador Program 2024

Student Ambassadors will lead their school mates, teachers and school community in The Push-Up Challenge by cheering them on to get fit, have fun and learn about mental health.

Australia’s largest mental health and fitness event, The Push-Up Challenge, is calling on students passionate about mental health to apply for its 2024 Student Ambassador Program.

Students completing Year 10, 11 and Year 12 in 2024 anywhere in Australia can apply to be a Student Ambassador and make a difference to the mental health of their school community. They will be equipped with mental health awareness training, resources and leadership support to coordinate The Push-Up Challenge at their school.

Founder of The Push-Up Challenge, Nick Hudson, says the Student Ambassador program is one of the team’s proudest achievements to date. “Watching students from around the country bring their communities together through fun and fitness is such a special thing” he commented.

Ambassadors benefit by gaining skills and experience in leading a community-based project, coordinating health promotion events and activities, and contributing to a good cause.

“When we think about mental health, we often think of mental illness. The Student Ambassador program aims to help students reframe this perception by providing tools to increase their mental health knowledge and build confidence in encouraging conversations about mental health with peers and community,” said Hudson.

The Push-Up Challenge will take place mid year in 2024, across three weeks. This year, 215,000 Australians took part in The Push-Up Challenge, collectively completing a staggering 315 million push-ups in 23 days and raising over $14.7 million for mental health charities Lifeline, Movember and Push for Better Foundation.

Get amongst the blue and yellow and the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club

Another great week of bowls was hosted at the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club. On Monday the 2nd of October we had two Major Singles. In the first of the Major Singles games Baldy Frame was the hot favourite and he took on Wilbur Harris. Wilbur won 5 of the first 7 ends to take the lead 8 to 2 and by the 13 end still had the lead 12 to 8. Baldy started to get his shots going to take the lead, winning the next 5 ends to go to the lead 16 to 13. In the next two ends Baldy put down consistent bowls to gain a 4 in each to take the game away from Wilbur. Wilbur won the next end but Baldy won the next end to take the game 25 to 14. Marker for this game was Bernie Mitchell thanks Bernie.

The second Major Singles game was between Nathan Reynolds and Peter McPhee. Nathan got off to a great start and by the 11th end was leading 13 to 5. Peter started to hit form with some great bowling to level the game in the 19th end 19 all. The game remained tight and was then 22 all.

Nathan in the next end managed to gain a 3 to win the game 25 to 22. Great bowls by both players made this game an enjoyable one to watch. Marker was Eddie McPhee thanks Eddie. Please remember that it is COMPULSORY to wear shin pads covered in long socks to take the field also only wear runners or futsal boots.

Can A Sports Injury Increase Your Risk Of Breast Cancer?

Leading breast cancer surgeon, Associate Professor Sanjay Warrier busts sporting injury myth.

If you had an active childhood spent playing sports afterschool or on the weekend you might have sustained the odd sports injury here and there in those rough and tumble days. Let’s face it, netball can get a bit rough and elbows tend to go flying at the best of times. Sometimes our old injuries can come back to haunt us as we age.

Some people believe that sports injuries can lead to breast cancer, however, Associate Professor Sanjay Warrier assures everyone that this is not the case. There is no link between sports injuries and cancer, he clarified, however, an injury may draw attention to a previously formed lump, which is then how the cancer is detected.

Associate Professor Warrier is one of the world’s leading breast health and breast cancer surgeons who has built a highly respected practice in Sydney. The practice spans three locations with its main surgical centre located at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Camperdown, and the other sites at BMA House, Macquarie Street, Sydney and Bondi Junction Medical, Oxford Street, Bondi Junction.

In addition to Associate Professor Warrier’s breast health and surgical work, he also dedicates considerable time to research exploring and developing advancements in breast cancer detection and treatments to improve outcomes for patients. He also developed the world’s first Master of Breast Surgery which is delivered through the University of Sydney.

Injuries cannot cause cancer

“Injuries cannot cause cancer, but an injury may lead to finding cancer in the injured area. For example, a bone that is weak from a cancerous tumour is more likely to break. So, if an accident occurs during a sporting event and the bone breaks, then during the course of treatment for the injury, the cancer is discovered,” Associate Professor Warrier explained.

“There is no data or indication that trauma of any kind to the breast is linked to breast cancer or can cause breast cancer. This is a myth that has circulated for many years without foundation.”

Breast trauma causes lumps

“People are understandably concerned that breast injury/trauma can cause cancer because the trauma can cause lumps to develop. These lumps, however, are not cancerous. Let me explain further: there are two types of lumps that can develop from trauma. The first is called hematoma and this is a deep bruise that will heal. The other is fat necrosis, which is scarred fatty tissue in the breast that results from injury,” Associate Professor Warrier said.

“If you have had some sports injury around the breast area, and you are concerned, the best thing to do is to book in for a mammogram. This will give you peace of mind about the risks.”

So what does cause breast cancer?

“Certain risk factors are, getting older, having a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer, previous treatment using radiation therapy, reproductive history and genetic mutations,” Associate Professor Warrier added.

Record Numbers At Croquet

Jane Gilmour celebrates 80 plus 1, happy birthday Jane for 8th September. Kevin and Colleen Gunn of the Vandenberg Hotel Forbes are proud sponsors of the Forbes Croquet Club.

There were 30 players rearing to go at Aussie Croquet on Saturday 23rd September. We again had another visitor, Terry Rubie. There were four players who managed to win three games, Colleen Liebich, Elvy Quirk, Cheryle Toohey and John Cole. The big winners on the day were 14—9 Joan Littlejohn and John Browne, Cheryle Toohey and May Jones. The mid winners were 14—10 John Farah and Sandy Hepburn, Elvy Quirk and John Cole, Rex Toole and Tony Thomson, Elvy Quirk and May Jones, Kevin and Terry Rubie, Jill Rubie and Fay Picker, Noel Jolliffe, John Cole and Colleen Liebich.

Golf Croquet on Tuesday 26th saw a record number of 41 players attend. We welcome new player, David Williams and our two visitors from Yamba Malcolm and Rosemary Every. Colleen Gunn from the Vanderurg Hotel, who sponsors us, was there to present a new sign to be displayed in the club house. Thank you to Kevin and Colleen for their generous support.

There was only two players who managed to win three games, Geoff Coles and Allan Jones. The big winners on the day were 11—2 Robin Pols and Phillip Moran, Elvy Quirk and Bruce Field. 10—3 Robin Pols an Lorraine Todd, Marie Spry and John Browne. The mid winners on the day were 9—4 Noel Jolliffe and Tony Thomson, Lyal Strudwick and Fay Picker, Kevin Rubie and John Job.

Forbes Croqut Club have six playing courts at Halpins Flat. We play Golf Croquet every Tuesday, you are asked to arrive no later than 8:50am for the draw. Aussie Croquet Saturday does have more tactical play, but it is not difficult to learn. The cost to learn is $2.00 for six games, then you might like to become a member which costs only $10 p.a. and $5 per day.
