Spring Into The New Season

Shades Of Grey…

As with fashion, home decorating goes through interesting cycles of what’s in
and what’s not. Key periods in styling will always be remembered through the colours and designs that were in vogue in a time period, i.e green laminated benchtops takes us back to the seventies.

Over the last few years decorating with neutral tones and adding the WOW factor with accessories became trendy. This has allowed everyone more freedom to style and update their looks much more frequently with a minimum of fuss and expense.

But I feel the tides are changing again. After attending the recent launch of the new Haymes Paint colour collection for the new season, I fell in love with a whole new palette of colours I think will be the new direction with soft greys to deeper silver and more blue-grey tones. Instead of always selecting a more stone-base neutral with varying shades of creams and browns, we will now be selecting softer tones.

These new shades will combine beautifully with the move towards using black as an accent colour, as well as adopting a new sophisticated feel to our styling efforts. The grey colour wheel also works perfectly with accents of red to make a retro inspired statement. It can also look soft and feminine when paired with lilac and silver and a touch of bling. Yellow looks amazing when splashed in a room of grey, and I love it when orange is combined with grey to look vibrant, and seriously stylish and sophisticated.

I think it will not be long before there is a new must have colour. We will select this colour to make our homes a true vision of neutral beauty and it will allow us to unleash the decorator within as our possibilities of choice become limitless.

All Winyar Rams For Sale At Auction

The Winyar Merino and Poll Merino Stud on property Auction Ram sale takes place on 7th September at 1pm, with inspection starting at 10am. All rams on the property will be offered for sale to enhance the quality and selection on offer.

At Winyar a new feature to the ongoing measurement of Winyar rams is the Australian Sheep Genetics figures. These figures will be available on sale day or upon request. Winyar also offers a free sheep classing and advisory service, which results in huge gains.

According to Wool Classer for Winyar, Michelle Woodhead, the Winyar wools reaching cutting fleece of over 8.5kg average at 19 microns is quite an achievement in high rainfall. “The wool have excellent bloom, tensile strength and nourishment. I can thoroughly recommend the Winyar type.”

Quality Bulls On Sale At Coota Park

A unique line up of bulls will be on offer at the Coota Park Blue-E On-Property bull sale on 6th September at 2pm. Coota Park Blue E will be selling 45 bulls and 20 cows (with calves at foot) on the day. Based in Woodstock near Cowra, Coota Park Blue E has grass-fed bulls that are performance recorded, fertility tested and sold with a guarantee. The Wright family developed this line of Angus x Shorthorn cattle 20 years ago.

At the Beef Spectacular Steer Trials in March, the two teams entered came third and fourth overall out of 67 teams – a great result for Coota Park Blue-E in this prestigious competition. The sale will be conducted by Delta Ag. More information is available at www.Bluee.net.au.

Felix Rams – It’s All About The Lambs

One In Five Suffer From Pollen Allergy

Pollen from grasses, weeds or trees can trigger symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and asthma. Pollen seasons can last for several months and exposure is difficult to avoid. Pollen grains can be spread by birds, bees or wind, with airborne pollen causing most allergies.

Allergic rhinitis symptoms are the body’s immune response to inhaled pollen, resulting in chronic inflammation of the eyes and nasal passages. Symptoms include runny, itchy and congested nose; irritable, itchy, watery and red eyes; and itchy ears, throat and palate. Allergic rhinitis affects around 1 in 5 people in Australia and can lead to frequent sinus infections.

Pollination times vary with the plant variety and its location. For example, trees pollinate in late winter and early spring. Grasses flower next, and the weed ‘Plantain’ flowers from August to May.

White Cypress (Murray) Pine is the only Australian tree that produces highly allergenic pollen. Its growth extends from the western slopes and plains of Eastern Australia to Western Australia, and it flowers from late July to the end of August.

Many species of Casuarina produce pollen throughout the year and may cause allergic rhinitis symptoms at any time.

Tips for reducing pollen exposure
• Stay indoors until after midday, if possible.
• Try to avoid going out on windy days or after thunderstorms.
• Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
• Do not mow the grass and stay inside when it is being mown.
• Consider planting a low allergen garden around the home.
• Keep windows closed both at home and in your car.
• Do not picnic in parks or in the country during the pollen season.
• Try to plan holidays out of the pollen season or holiday at the seaside.
• Remove weeds or trees outside your bedroom window you are sensitive to.
• Research plants less likely to trigger allergic rhinitis or asthma to plant in your garden.
• Shower when you arrive home and rinse your eyes frequently with water.

Medications or treatments will relieve symptoms, but do not cure allergies.
• Antihistamine tablets or syrups (nonsedating) help to reduce symptoms, but they are not as effective in controlling severe nasal blockage and dribble.
• Intranasal corticosteroid nasal sprays (INCS) have a potent action on inflammation when used regularly.
• Combination medications containing an antihistamine and intranasal corticosteroid nasal spray offer the combined advantages of both medications.
• Decongestant sprays unblock and dry the nose, but should not be used for more than a few days.
• Decongestant tablets unblock and dry the nose, but should be used with caution.
• Natural products such as salt water nasal sprays or douches can be effective in relieving symptoms.

A Great Season In The Making

Things just keep getting better. What a month it has been: we have seen both sheep and cattle reach record highs, especially in the cattle market. With widespread rain over the last month we are seeing the makings of a great season, which is fantastic.

On the sheep side of the market we have seen all markets very strong. We are also noticing a good number of new season suckers coming onto the market that are receiving very strong competition and seeing the best of them make up $160 and $170, but take note with more numbers due to come onto the market these prices will only be sustainable for the best of them. On the trade and export markets we are still seeing prices in the mid to high $6/kg for the better finished lambs. The mutton market is still kicking along very strongly with most grades hovering around the 400c/kg mark.

The cattle market is still going from strength to strength with good feeder cattle attracting record prices with well bred steers reaching up to $4.25c/kg. These prices are bringing some great returns for clients. We are still seeing some good lines of grain fed cattle coming through the yards with grain fed steers making $3.40 to $3.90/kg, and the heifer portion making up to $3.70/kg. The cow market is still very strong with some of the best euro cows making in excess of $2.90/kg, but the majority of the good 3 and 4 score cows are still around the $2.50-$2.80/kg mark.

With spring just around the corner we are starting to see some strong activity from restockers trying to either restock or make use of ample feed. I think during the spring we will see very strong competition for all types of restocker livestock. With all this in mind I think we are in for very interesting times.

Forbes Pig Sale Results

A total of 690 animals were sold at the pig sale last Friday. The trend of the sale saw pork selling for $10 to $20 dearer, bacon remained firm and backfatter went for $5 to $10 cheaper.

Price range on the day for the different categories were:
• Weaners: $64 to $128
• Light pork: $134 to $148 Heavy pork: $176 to $192
• Light bacon: $180 to $204
• Heavy Bacon: $240 to $320
• Light Backfatter: $55,04 to $275,65
• Heavy Back fatter: $335.96 to $470.40

Between The Sheets

Bedrooms are no longer just a place to lay your head after a long day of toiling. Whether we work outside of our home or inside its walls raising children, our bedroom can be a room of great importance and significance to our wellbeing. A bedroom can be a private sanctuary that we can retreat and withdraw to when needed. By escaping from the outside world for a while, a beautiful bedroom can allow us to relax and unwind, taking pleasure in the fact that we are safe and secure in a tranquil space that we have created for ourselves.

By surrounding yourself with items you love and cherish, your bedroom can become a true reflection of your own personality. Because your bedroom is a private space you can really express your own personal style in a much more dramatic way.

A bedroom is not on show to the world like the main entertaining areas of your home, so decorating choices can be bolder. Get daring and express yourself with colour, prints and patterns. When choosing your bedding and curtaining don’t be afraid to mix patterns and prints as well as incorporating different textures into the choices you make.

Purchasing a quality mattress and bed will ensure that you will have that sensational night’s sleep you have been longing for. But for an instant update, just change your bedding. A new quilt cover can work miracles in changing the overall look to a room. Throws and cushions add texture, warmth and bring the whole theme together.

And in my opinion the more cushions you pile on the bed, the better the effect. This is a design rule that I follow to the letter, as all my friends will attest to when they see my own bed. Remember to decorate with pieces you love and that hold special significance to you, as well as incorporating photos of loved ones to really create a story about your life. I personally love groupings of photos arranged in block formations with the same framing to give a really designer look to our everyday family photos.

A well-placed rug in a bedroom will have maximum impact in giving your private space a really luxurious feel. Imagine placing your feet on a soft shag rug each morning when you step out of bed.

Making sure you have enough storage is also critical to gaining maximum efficiency from how you are going to use your bedroom. There will be no solace sought in the space if clutter is intruding on your life. Lamps and soft lighting will give the space an intimate feel, add an armchair and your room is ready to go. So grab your latest copy of my magazine or the current novel you are reading, curl up in your favourite chair or lay on your new bed surrounded by cushions and start enjoying the fruits of your labour.
