Forbes Phoenix

Our Gal

February 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Gwen Barnard

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
Since 1978… nearly 40 years. I love Forbes (except for the heat) for the ease of driving around without too much traffic and finding parking easily; walking around Lake Forbes; our medical services; head- ing to the supermarket for bread and milk and walking out an hour later with a full trolley because I ran into so many people I know; and the genuine concern people have for each other.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I work at Catholic Healthcare Jemalong Residential Village (JRV). I love all the different personalities that help make our unique culture. There is a lot of laughter in our corridors, and yes there are sad times, however they are special for those who live at JRV and the family and friends who visit. I truly love being able to meet people when they are in human need.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
Time with family and friends, road tripping and researching with Mr Google for new travel destinations.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
That is a no brainer! Through faith I am strong in God’s mighty power.

What is your pet hate? Snoring! Other people snoring! I don’t snore, at least I have never heard myself snore. Another one is slamming doors!

Tell us about your best holiday ever.
My best and most memorable holiday was to Antarctica. We sailed for 22 days and had 32 landings and crossed Drake Passage, the worst ocean crossing in the world. I will never forget the ice-covered mountain peaks, the iceberg crystal cit- ies, the storms, whales, the hundreds of thousands of penguins, the isolation – it all took my breath away.

What does becoming an Australian citizen mean to you?

February 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Emma Gamble: Everything really! I am now the same nationality as my husband, Martin, and our children, James and Olivia. I consider Australia more in line with my ideals than England.

Murphy George:
This is such a proud moment. I feel very happy to have become an Australian.

Sydney and Stephanie Sanu
: “I am now an Australian citizen and that makes me happy”, said Sydney. “I am proud,” said Stephanie. Both girls loved the Australian Citizenship card and coin they were presented with.

Question of the Week

February 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

What would you like to learn during your first year at school?

Jonty Rattenbury:
Mmmm, not sure but I do like playing with my friends. I know, I would like to learn to write then I can write my Mum a letter.

Tyler Tomkinson
: I would like to learn more letters so I can write a story. I am not sure what the story will be yet but it will be a good one.

Rachel Billsborough:
We are already learning some stuff, like sounds. When I know all the sounds I will be able to read. I am looking forward to reading by myself as we already read lots of books together at home.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
I moved to Warroo from Parkes when I was 3. I went to primary school in Warroo and attended High School in Forbes. In 1992 I moved to Forbes so have lived in town for 25 years.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I work at Jemalong Wool. The best thing about my work is the people I work with and our clients.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
To unwind I drive the boat whilst friends and family water ski, fly my Pilot Cherokee when I get the chance, and pottering around my garden.

What are you really good at?
That is a hard one… I am told I am good at diplomacy and my kids love my poached eggs.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? To fly like a bird.

What is your pet hate? Disloyalty and rudeness. In addition, people who mispronounce kilometres.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. The best holiday ever was in 1987 when Sue and I backpacked for five months through Europe and the British Isles. We stayed with friends in Scotland, swam in Loch Ness, drove around England and Ireland and got a EuRail train pass and travelled in Spain and Greece. We loved it as the weather was hot like here, and it was as cheap as chips.

Kathy Bray

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
I have lived in Forbes since I was about three years old. Forbes is a wonderful place to live because of our friendly com- munity. Forbes is truly amazing because if there is a crisis the whole community works together to help and support those in need.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I work for a Government department. What I enjoy most is working with people, meeting peo- ple and learning new things.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
I relax in my garden. I also spend a lot of my time with my grandchildren and other family members. Watching my grandchildren play sport brings me a lot of joy.

What are you really good at?
Crocheting and that is because I love making items for the grandchildren

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Invisibility, so I could vanish in the blink of an eye, and leave the house without anyone noticing.

What is your pet hate? Seeing children or pets being left in the car.

Tell us about your best holiday ever.
The best holiday ever was the road trip about 20 years ago, to Renmark in South Australia with my daughter. The purpose of the trip was to spend time with a best friend. We also did all the tourist sites on the way. It certainly was a wonderful holiday.

What does Australia Day mean to you?

January 26, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Marlene Huf: I am proud to be Australian and think we live in the best country in the world. Aus- tralia Day is a time to reflect and appreciate what we have.

Wayne Richards: That is a hard question. It is the day we became a nation and everyone has their own opinion as to whether that was for better or worse. I am looking forward to heading to the celebrations at Frog’s Hollow for the first time this Australia Day.
