LOOKING TO PLAY AFL: Forbes Junior AFL, Forbes Swampies and Parkes Panthers have all been making huge strides growing AFL in the region with more and more juniors and women taking up the sport. Follow them all on Facebook for regular updates including clinics, training times and match day info.

CELEBRATING OUR NATION: Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller with Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack and his wife, Catherine, along with recent addition to the Australia Day Honours list, Forbes Shire Council GM Steve Loane and his wife, Lisa. Mr Loane accepted his award for his contribution to the livestock industry.

 

POLLY WANTS A YABBY RACE: Polly and his trusty canine companion Airy, were on hand at Bogan Gate pub for the yabby races which sadly didn’t materialise this year due to smaller attendance numbers.

 

COTY WINNERS: Senior winners John and Christine Gorton with Mayor Phyllis Miller and Forbes Citizen Of The Year, Laurie Norris, Forbes Ambassador and Para-lympic gold medalist Lindy Hou, junior winner Benjamin Barnard and MC and Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance.

YOUTH CENTRE FUNDING: Some $52,143 will be invested into the Youth and Community Centre to create access to the existing mezzanine level to improve storage, installation of a rock wall, widen the access ramp at the front entrance to ensure accessibility and compliance with the Council’s Disability Inclusion Plan as well as the installation of new lounges and a TV according to Sam Farraway (left) with Mayor Phyllis Miller and Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance.

 

PHILING UP IN FORBES: Member for Orange and NSW Shooters Party MP Phil Donato with shoppers at Forbes Handicraft Store doing some last minute pre-Christmas shopping on his quick stopover as he toured the electorate.

 

RUGBY FUNDING: Sam Farraway was on hand recently with Mayor Phyllis Miller and Deputy Chris Roylance to announce significant funding for South Circle and Grin-stead Oval. They will receive $200,000 to construct two new female change rooms as well as the refurbishment of the existing male change rooms.

 

SELECTED FOR OCEANIA CUP: Sam Drane (front row) has been selected as part of the Oceania Junior Cup team for 2022. The young Forbes rider has a massive calendar of events this season and will be looking to continue his podium form from the last round of the ASBK Australian Superbikes before Christmas.

 

SAVE THE DATE: February 7 will see the rescheduled International Day Of People with Disability celebrated and recognised at Forbes Olympic Pool from 10am – 2pm. There will be free pool entry, a BBQ, sport, games and entertainment for everyone! Contact community@forbes.nsw.gov.au by February 2 to RSVP.

NEW PANELS: The tilt panels at the new Heated Pool were raised as part of the new structure just before Christmas in another exciting step towards completion. This project will ultimately ensure all users of the Heated Pool can access a safe, fit-for-purpose facility upon completion. The completion date is March 2022, and we can’t wait until this fantastic facility will be back in action!

 

ON THE DEUCE: Although Jungle Deuce never got the chocolates in the Phoenix TAB race on December 18, Irinka Kennels continue to enjoy outstanding results. More next week in Sport.

 

FUNDING BOOST: Member for Orange Philip Donato MP visited Forbes before Christmas to announce the success of the Forbes Fin Swimming Club Inc in securing $2,500 as part of the NSW Government’s 2020/21 Local Sporting Grant program.

 

QUICK RUN TO THE SHOPS: A quick pre-Christmas stop over at Bernardi’s for NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack was also squeezed in whilst the trio toured the flood ravaged region with councilors.

 

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY: After a wet 2021, 2022 has also seen it’s fair share of moisture with heavy falls coming on the back of one of the wettest Springs in recent memory and our third flood in a decade. This cracking picture by Vince Kirk pretty much sums it up.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS: Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet and Forbes SES Commander Roc Walshaw with NSW SES volunteers. Volunteers came from as far away as Broken Hill, Campbelltown and Coffs Harbour to help during the floods.

 

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS: Forbes North’s Desiree Barter and Mary Hinchcliffe with the departing Trish Bol-ton. Forbes North Public is on the lookout for volunteers to ensure their successful ethics classes can run in 2022.

 

NEW ARTWORKS: Just before the floods arrived, new sculptures were erected at lake Forbes to finalise the last five story poles. Each depicts key wildlife of special significance to Wiradjuri people. Artwork by Brett ‘Mon’ Garling.

CHECKING IN: Premier Perrottet took time out to talk to a large number of people while he was here including SES volunteer Marian Grant.

 

NO THROUGH ROAD: This incredible drone shot by Josh Gavin perfectly captures the devastation of the floods in Forbes this past week and the difficulty navigating the roads around the shire.

 

PREMIER VISIT: NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet and Deputy Paul Toole arrived in Forbes last week to assess the damage and get the latest from the SES.

Forbes Floods 2021

WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE: This spectacular aerial shot by Josh Gavin shows the gushing water marching it’s way like a dark army towards Forbes last Tuesday.

RFS CHECK IN: RFS like many other emergency service personnel did the rounds to over 800 homes in the two days leading into the flood peak to give evacuation orders and help residents get to safety – even the magpies!

 

FEDERAL SUPPORT: Member for Riverina and Nationals MP, Michael McCormack stopped over for a quick visit in Forbes to check on residents and inspect the floodwaters enroute to Parkes.

 

GROWING CONCERN: Forbes locals at the Cowra Road bridge watching the Lachlan River slowly climb.

 

EVACUATION CENTRE: an Evacuation Centre was set up next to the Forbes Council Chambers in the old church earlier this week. The centre has housed all social service providers making it easier for those impacted to access.

BIGGEST FLOOD: The 1952 Forbes floods still remain the biggest with major flooding occurring in June 1952 with a peak of 10.8 metres however the next two greatest floods have both occurred within the last 5 years (2016 and 2021). Pic courtesy of Forbes History Museum.
