In reaction to Linda Clark’s letter last week about the word ‘Eternity’ appearing at random places around Forbes lately, Leo Butler sent us this image taken in August last year about 200m north of the Camp Street bridge towards the Dreaming Centre. “I can remember in the 1950s and 1960s the word ‘Eternity’ chalked on a rock near Maimuru between Grenfell and Young, maybe the work of Arthur Stace,” Leo said.

New Number For Women’s Health: The Western NSW Local Health District Women’s Health Service has a new 1800 number. You can reach the service by calling 1800 008 422 between Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm to get in contact with your local women’s health nurse, and to book appointments directly. A referral is not required.

Real-Time Weather Forecast For Farmers: Farmers and regional communities in the Central West can now access detailed, real-time weather observations received by the new Doppler radar at Yeoval. The radar’s information will revolutionise how weather-dependent decisions are made, and will enhance the productivity of rural communities. The new radar enables the Bureau of Meteorology to provide accurate, real-time data, determining rain and wind velocity, raindrop and hail size, and the height of bushfire plumes up to 200km from the radar site. The addition of Yeoval to the radars at Brewarrina and Hillston-Ivanhoe means an area covering approximately 30% of NSW now has access to real-time weather warnings and forecasts. Data from the Yeoval Doppler radar is available on the Bureau of Meteorology weather app or at www.bom.gov.au.

New Wyangala Water Treatment Plant: Work to deliver up to 800,000 litres of clean drinking water every day has started at the new $5.1 million Wyangala Water Treatment Plant. The plant will be owned and operated by Cowra Shire Council when work is finished in early 2023. The project’s principal contractor, Enviropacific Services, aim to employ one-third of its workforce locally.

Testing And Research City at Cudal: The NSW Government has unveiled its vision for regional NSW to become the Southern Hemisphere hub of cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology, with a testing and research ‘city’ to be built at Cudal, near Orange. The government announced a $9.5 million upgrade to the Future Mobility Testing and Research Centre – once the local airstrip – which opened in 2019. The goal is to develop Australia’s first certification site for driverless vehicles.

More Return And Earn Points: More return points are being added to the NSW Government’s popular Return and Earn scheme after a new contract was signed with network operator TOMRA Cleanaway. The container deposit scheme has seen more than 7.4 billion containers returned since it began in 2017, and more than $30 million raised for charities and community groups. This resulted in a 52% reduction in the volume of drink container litter and recycling more than 672,000 tonnes in materials.

Call For 24/7 Nursing Care In Homes

June 3, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Member for Orange Phil Donato MP with the bill calling for registered nurses to be available 24/7 at nursing homes.

Member for Orange Philip Donato MP will once again introduce a bill to the NSW Legislative Assembly seeking to mandate a registered nurse be available around the clock in NSW nursing homes.

“Tragically, the pandemic had a devastating impact on the vulnerable residents living in nursing homes, which exposed the severe lack of medically trained staff to care for those afflicted with Covid-19,” said Phil.

“The Royal Commission into Aged Care revealed an insufficient staffing of registered nurses in nursing homes, and one of the commissioner’s recommendations is the introduction of a minimum staff standard across the board – including registered nurses.”

The second iteration of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party’s bill, titled the Public Health Amendment (Registered Nurses in Nursing Homes) Bill 2020, was brought before the NSW Legislative Council for debate in May by Phil’s colleague, Mark Banasiak MLC, and passed the Upper House on 11th May.

“I acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the many personal care workers looking after the residents in the nursing homes, but they do not have the level of training or clinical expertise a registered nurse has, such as administering medications, assessing and managing medical conditions, and time-critical referrals for escalation of patient care.

“This bill, if passed into legislation, would require nursing homes to staff, at a minimum, the regulatory prescribed number of registered nurses at all times. Nursing homes would no longer be without a registered nurse to deliver care – day or night.

“We want the best possible nursing care for those precious seniors in our lives, our grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts – and that care shouldn’t be restricted to business hours, it should be 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Phil.

Mayoral Notes

June 3, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

I met with the mayors of the Central NSW last week and we discussed the federal election result including its implications and opportunities.

Across the nation voters called for a more locally responsive Federal Government. The community is clearly calling for a reset of leadership.

This is where the mayors of our region will become even more important with their deep knowledge of local issues and opportunities. The Central NSWJO Board advocated in support of the National Farmers Federation policy for regional precincts including in our area. Now we must work with the government to ensure every community gets the benefit.

Along with my fellow mayors I will be going to Canberra in June and will be seeking meetings to progress this and other initiatives including aged care and telecommunications.

It is Reconciliation Week and I urge everyone to Be Brave and Make Change, and to invite you to be part of our joint event to celebrate at Nelson Park today, from 3pm to 6pm.

This will be a fun family event with a range of activities. It is free and transport is available courtesy of Yoorana Gunya.

A reminder to all of our amazing community groups that Council’s Community Funding program is open for applications of up to $5,000 until 31st July for events or projects until April 2023. Submit your application through the smarty grants portal, or come to our Community Funding Workshops on 24th and 27th June, or call our team at Council for assistance.

Men’s Shed Breaks Barriers And Builds Friendships

June 3, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Men’s Shed is continuing to prove its value to the community, and is encouraging more members to join and partake in its outstanding work and reputation.

The organisation is one of hundreds nation-wide that provide a facility for over 930 members in NSW to engage themselves in projects and socialise with other members.

Not all Men’s Sheds look the same, but simply take a step inside the Forbes Men’s Shed on Union Street, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

The shed is a modern take on the iconic shed in the backyard that has long been a proud part of our Australian culture, and is recognised as one of the most powerful men’s groups, addressing health concerns and assisting men to ask for help.

Forbes Men’s Shed member Don Archer said it was a great place to engage with other men and learn something new every time.

“I love the knowledge and experiences of the other blokes here, I always go home having learnt something new,” he said.

He said the Forbes Men’s Shed had a great management committee that focused on providing a safe and busy environment for men who can work on community projects, specific men’s shed projects, or something of their own choice in their own time.

The Fobes Men’s Shed is looking forward to inducting two students from Forbes High School to assist with its projects alongside its support works from early July.

Memberships forms are available at the Forbes Men’s shed on Union street or from www.mensshed.org/application-form.

National Day Of Healing

June 3, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Brad Holmes led a smoking ceremony at the National Sorry Day event at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in Forbes last Thursday.

Last Thursday the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in Forbes honoured National Sorry Day with a ceremony to remember the Stolen Generations.

National Sorry Day takes place on 26th May every year to remember the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities to be “assimilated” into white Australian culture. They are known as the Stolen Generations.

At the ceremony in Forbes cut outs of hands and candles were placed in the sand to represent the stolen generations, while Brad Holmes did a smoking ceremony. MC for the day Le’Kiesha-Lee Bowden introduced guest speaker Judy Johnson.

National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how Australians can all play a part in the healing process for the people and nation.

Judy Johnson was the guest speaker at National Sorry Day last Thursday hosted by the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in Forbes to remember the Stolen Generations.

The sun was shining as parents, families and community members returned to the grounds of Forbes North Public School to share a cuppa and raise funds for the Cancer Council last week. Over 160 visitors joined school staff and students to raise $1,235 at the school’s Biggest Morning Tea event.

This was the first opportunity for new principal, David McGaw, to welcome families to the school grounds. “It is a real honour and nothing short of a privilege to lead this school into what I hope is a new era where parents and community regularly visit our school grounds, especially for such worthy causes such as the Biggest Morning Tea”.

Thanks to the school canteen and staff, adults shared a range of delights including blue jelly slice, apple cake, banana cake, chocolate cake, fruit cups, individually packaged vegie crudites cups with homemade dips, scones with jam and cream and more. The table was set and the kettle was ready when guests began to arrive at 11am.

The Junior Dance Troupe performed on the day as a treat to welcome guests.

Grease and Oil Change Workshop: This is the 7th consecutive year of the brain and body workshops for rural people started by Cherie Quade in 2015 as a way of creating conversation in our community about mental health, wellbeing and real life stories of how people in rural communities stay afloat when the rest of the world seems like a lot. The next free workshop is on Monday, 30th May at 6pm. Clinical Psychologist Vicki Maher is coming to The Back Room in Forbes for an educational, uplifting and practical conversation about mental health in these current times. Numbers are limited due to space, make sure to register at https://greaseandoilchangevickimaher.eventbrite.com.au

Loneliness: It is a growing epidemic impacting seniors across Australia with one in four older Australians identifying themselves as lonely. Community organisation Inclusee is encouraging Australians who are feeling isolated or lonely to visit inclusee.org,au to access the power of connection. Inclusee is calling for participants over the age of 65, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the age of 50, who feel they are at risk of social isolation and loneliness. The programs are completely free for participants, though some eligibility conditions apply. You can register to participate online at www.inclusee.org.au or call on 1800 287 687.

Lightweight Bag Ban: The NSW Government’s ban on lightweight plastic bags will come into force from 1st June, and from November more problematic plastics, such as cutlery, plates and polystyrene food ware and cups will be banned. Single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60% of all litter in NSW. Stopping the supply of problematic plastic will help prevent it from entering our environment as litter, or going into landfill. The ban will prevent almost 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from entering the environment in NSW over the next 20 years. So-called “compostable” and “bioplastic” alternatives are also being banned. For more information about the NSW plastics ban, visit http://www.dpie.nsw.gov.au/plastics-ban

Birth Certificate Blitz: Hundreds of free birth certificates will be made available to vulnerable people in NSW, including people experiencing economic disadvantage, Aboriginal people and survivors of domestic and family violence. A new agreement will provide up to 700 free birth certificates for vulnerable people, particularly in regional and remote NSW. The free birth certificate blitz will run up to 30 June 2022.

Malaysian Dinner Concludes CWA Study

May 27, 2022 by Sue Cunningham

International Committee Carol Watling, Sue Cunningham and Heather Mackinnon in traditional Malaysian dress at Malaysian Dinner (left), and Karen Wright with mum Dianne at the dinner (right).

Food not only brings people together, but is also enriching as members of the Forbes CSW Evening Branch experienced at the conclusion of their international study of Malaysia with a traditional meal last week.

Each year the CWA of NSW nominates a country for all its members to focus on and learn about the environment, the people and their customs, the traditional food and clothing, social issues and its government.

Before and after dinner, guests perused a static display on Malaysia, as well as a display of some batik material, a red hibiscus, the Malaysian national flower, and products imported to Australia from Malaysia.

National issues were highlighted including the destruction of rainforests due to clearing for palm oil plantations that is threatening critically endangered species of animals like the orangutan, pygmy elephant and Malaysian tiger, as well as unique plants species such as the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world. Food and water security, climate change and the disposal of plastic waste, which has increased dramatically since Covid -19, are other issues.

“It was a very enjoyable and insightful night with very interesting information and an unusual way of presenting it. It was good to have people involved,” said President of Forbes CWA Elaine Bright.

Several of our members dressed up in traditional Malaysian costumes.

Oxley Group International Officer, Marilyn Pizarro said it was a very enjoyable evening and an impressive display of issues confronting Malaysia today.

“The lucky dip idea for guests to choose a fact and read to guests was a great way to get people interacting with each other,” said vice president of the Forbes Evening Branch Karen Wright.

Forbes Evening Branch would like to thank Forbes Sport and Recreation Club for allowing us to host our evening at the club.
