FHS And CWA Combine To Cater

September 30, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

CWA Evening Branch Publicity Officer Sue Cunningham (middle) with the Forbes High students who helped to prep lunches for judges and stewards at the Forbes Show. They are (L-R) Isabella Brown, Ebonnie Colvin-Hopley, Paula Terrado and Holly Young.

The judges and stewards at the recent Forbes Show were well fed thanks to a joint effort by Forbes High School students and the Forbes CWA Evening Branch.

Four Year 10 students completed two days of work experience helping to serve slices made by Red Bend Catholic College for morning and afternoon tea over the two days of the show, while the main task was to plate up and serve lunches for about thirty-eight people each day.

“It was wonderful to see so many young people interested and helping out,” said the President of the Show Society Janine Coles, also referring to the many other students involved with show preparations including Boys to the Bush who did a lot of heavy lifting. The judges and stewards were very complimentary and appreciative of the students’ efforts.

President of the Forbes Evening Branch Robyn Miller said: “The girls were amazing, jumping in and doing what had to be done without hesitation.”

The students also experienced the cake judging and watched the judging of the handicraft section.

Colourful Changes To Create CCC

September 30, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Public School Captain Ruth Whittey thanked Kathryn Currey from Evolution Mining for funding the shade cloth for the yarning circle at the Community Conservation Corner.

Forbes Public School has established a Community Conservation Corner (CCC) with an outdoor classroom to make better use of the school’s close proximity to the beauty of Lake Forbes.

The CCC has Wiradjuri murals, a shade structure in First Nation colours over a yarning circle, while aluminium bench tops, stools, microscopes and storage space will be added for free community workshops and school lessons. “The goal is to develop our students’ and community member’s knowledge, skills and values to sustain our planet,” said teacher Katie Stitt.

“We would like to encourage the community to feel welcome in this space.”

The murals were funded by Arts OutWest and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) and painted by Wiradjuri artist Scott Sauce Towney, who also designed the animal totems in 2019: Safe (platypus), Respectful (magpie) and Responsible (Kangaroo).

The shade sail was funded by Cowal Evolution Mining, and the bench tops, microscopes and yarning circle cushions by a second FRRR grant.

This will allow for hands-on activities to take place in the CCC to support the eco-system, sustain biodiversity and foster lifelong sustainability practices. The school’s raised veggie beds will be moved to the CCC and thanks to a donation from Central West Lachlan Landcare they will be filled with soil and edible plants and bush tucker. Teachers will teach a Kindergarten – Year 6 sustainability program linked to the NSW Curriculum.

The school already has strong connections with a variety of community organisations and groups including Central West Local Land Services, Central West Lachlan Landcare, Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre, Boys to the Bush, Wiradjuri Cultural and Environmental Rangers Group, Wiradjuri LandCare Group and others.

The yarning circle will be used by different classes every Tuesday and Thursday morning when Elders and storytellers will enter via the lake gate and tell a story during roll call.

Wiradjuri artist Scott Sauce Towney designed and painted animal totems for Forbes Public School. Here is with the Kangaroo, totem animal for the school value Responsible. He painted the totem animals on a water tank at the Community Conservation Corner.

September 30, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

The seven debutants and their partners at the September event.

Months of planning, fundraising and dance lessons for seven young women and their partners culminated in a night when they impressed and delighted their invited guests.

The seven debutants and their partners were Melissa Read and Elijah Reid, Jaide Robinson and Michael Casey, Brianna Horner-Skinner and Ethan Graham, Nerida-lee Hayne and CJ Herron, Haylee Sullivan and Aiden Miller, Jess Tudgey and Ethan Smith and Tiarna Clothier and Conor Howarth.

They were presented to Peita Coote, Forbes High School Year 11 advisor and head teacher. The nervous duos performed their feature dance to “Parallel Lines” by Keith Urban, choreographed by Eliza Woods.

The raffle winners were: Abbey Bryant – $300 gift voucher donated by Outback Soils; Keith Clarke – garden parcel donated by Bunnings Warehouse; Leisel White – Flint Street Butchery meat tray; Ron Stace – Forbes Central Butchery gift voucher; Lauren Brown – SupaCheap Auto gift card.

Wonderful Organisation Turns 100!

September 30, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

MILESTONE… The Parkes CWA branch was formed on 4th April 1924 and currently has 225 members, including 8 juniors. The organising committee for the 100-year celebration were (L-R) Ann Olson, Lisa Bicket, Julia Macauly, Alice Milne (president) Dorothy Macdonald (member for 50 years) and Annette Moss. Insert: High tea at its best – CWA style.

There is only one way for the NSW CWA to celebrate its centenary and last Saturday 120 Parkes women were treated to a high tea out of the books, plus a fashion show, as the local branch celebrated this milestone occasion.

Established in 1922, “the ladies of the CWA forged a foundation of friendship and service that spread around the state and nation creating a legacy of strength and communities,” said Parkes President Alice Milne in her welcoming address at the Parkes Golf Club. “We seek to serve our community through friendship, advocacy and fundraising.”

Dorothy Macdonald, member of the Parkes branch for 50 years, reminisced about the friendship, good times and laughter over the years. “There are many treasured memories,” she said recalling how her mother was given life membership from the Peak Hill branch when she was 16 years old.

“At the age of 100 my mum still wanted to know what the CWA was doing.” She said Parkes branch had always been very busy and singled out catering for the opening of the Parkes Radio Telescope as a highlight. “Nothing was too hard, members are very skillful, accept all challenges and are able to achieve whatever they put their minds to, whether it is caring for others, or helping those in need to a love of cooking, flowers, music, and handicraft. “To enjoy what you do is not a chore and for all the years I have been involved with the CWA I have had the most enjoyable learning experiences in my life,” said Dorothy.

Forbes Residents Shine With Melbourne Cup

September 23, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Legendary race caller Greg Miles with Forbes jockey Cat Newcombe and local race caller Col Hodge with the 2022 Melbourne Cup in Forbes on Monday. Work on the cup starts well in advance and the finished trophy is delivered one year and one week out of the race.

There was a special sparkle in the Forbes Town Hall on Monday when plenty of residents got to hold 18 carats of gold in their hands.

“There is no other single item in Australia made from so much gold,” said Joe McGrath, Melbourne Cup Tour Manager.

The 1.65kg of gold for this year’s cup came from Evolution’s Cowal Mine about 100km from Forbes, which made the photo opportunity with the cup even more special for Forbes locals.

The Melbourne Cup Tour included Forbes as one of its 33 destinations this year, and after the event at the town hall, Jemalong Village residents had the Cup come to them specially.

“The Melbourne Cup represents so much starting in 1861 at the heart of the gold rush era, and going for 162 consecutive years,” said Joe.

Before residents lined up for their moment golden glory, legendary race caller and Melbourne Cup Ambassador Greg Miles shared the stage with local horse racing ‘celebrities’ Cat Newcombe and Col Hodges. Cat, who was a professional jockey for seven years, said it was a real privilege to see the Melbourne Cup in Forbes.

Local race caller Col Hodge said Greg was the best caller and after more than 50 year he was still learning from him.

Greg said his love of racing started in primary school when he used to listen to the races on the radio with his father every Saturday afternoon. That was when he decided to become a race caller, and in 1981 he called the Melbourne Cup at the age of 22. “I was still there 36 years later. It never felt like I was going to work.”

Greg’s enthusiasm for racing rubbed off as the air filled with excitement and bright smiles when students from Forbes Primary School lined up alongside older residents for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Shane Wode, who is known for doing Forbes Show announcements, has a great interest in the Melbourne Cup and made sure not to miss the opportunity to hold the cup.

Great Weather And Exciting Menu Leave Grazers Fulfilled

September 23, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

DRAGON DANCE… Kristen’s Dance Studio entertained guests at Grazing Down the Lachlan with a wonderful production of the dragon dance usually performed at Chinese New Year. The setting among the gum trees provided a beautiful contrast for the colourful costumes and dragon.

The fourth edition of Forbes’s very unique long lunch has lodged itself in the memory banks of the 700 plus guests who came from far and wide to enjoy a degustation menu among the magnificence of the Central West’s gum trees.

Many said it was the best Grazing Down the Lachlan yet, and director Wendy Muffet agreed that it might be judged by the resoundingly positive feedback. “I could not be more delighted with how it all worked out.

“The highly curated menu by Creative Director O Tama Carey was very exciting this year,” said Wendy. O Tama, who created all the recipes for the degustation menu, drew inspiration from the local history during the gold rush era and incorporated ideas from Chinese dishes found in regional restaurants in Australia with touches of native ingredients and flavours.

What is there not to enjoy about meandering from food station to food station through the wondrous landscape at the Gum Swamp Wildlife Refuge while enjoying carp crackers, ginger and shallot scrolls, kangaroo dim sums, a family soup, Ants Crawling on Trees (rice vermicelli with lam mince) and burnt bloodwood honey gelato each very carefully matched with a beverage?

The return of the multi-award winning event after a two-year hiatus came with a new set of weather challenges leaving the usual event site at 9 Mile Reserve under about a foot of water, and a new venue had to be found last minute.

“I take my hat off to the team, they are so resilient,” said Wendy. “That was a highlight for me when nobody said we could not do it.”

According to Wendy the new venue at Gum Swamp turned out to be a huge bonus as they were able to highlight the beauty of the area. “Many locals had never been there.”

Leaving the site as they found it by delivering a no-waste, environmentally responsible event makes this foodie adventure truly unique. Guests have the option to donate back their goodie back of items, including wine glass, enamel plate, linen napkin and recycled cutlery to be used the following year. Items worth $19,000 were donated back after the previous event. “We literally leave only footprints as everything is recycled,” said Wendy. “We find that more and more people are commending us on this philosophy, as so much waste is left behind at huge festivals and events across Australia.”

The benefit of this small idea that has grown into something really big, is not just a direct injection of $400,000 in the local economy, but the profits are delved back into community projects, such as the ever growing Sculptures Down the Lachlan art trail.

The Deputy Secretary, School Performance DOE Mr Murat Dizdar, accompanied by other senior system leaders, visited Forbes Public School on Thursday,1st September.

Mr Murat was greeted by our SRC leaders before viewing every classroom, sharing in delight the wonderful student results, our teaching practice, the engagement of students and strong school culture of efficacy.

Educational journey was the theme of Mr Dizdars visit, as he was presented with a ‘Forbes Public School Travel Journal’ to mark this occasion, filled with wonderful results, stories and extracts of each year group.

As he visited each classroom, teachers and students had the opportunity to share with him the everyday teaching and learning opportunities that take place, their classes and classroom practice, referring to the featured pages that reflect them and their students in his take away ‘travel journal’.

Our school grounds, so green at the moment and framed by the lake, as well as the refurbishment of our classrooms, our new outdoor learning space, dubbed Conservation Corner, and the cultural safety projects inclusive of our new PBL signs in Wiradjuri and totem murals were all things that staff and students took great pride in showing.

Mr Murat’s visit was made significant by the unveiling of a piece of artwork by Cheree Stokes which celebrates our flourishing school community. Cheree collected our staff’s personal FPS stories in the form of words and symbols and then incorporated them into this visual representation. The artwork showcases the strong culture our school shares and the journeys our staff have been on.

We were honoured to receive such distinguished guests and relished the opportunity to highlight our wonderful school.
