Evolution Mining Forbes All Age Regional Netball Carnival

May 12, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Teams travelled from Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, West Wyalong, Yass, Mudgee, Parkes, Cowra, Blayney, Cootamundra as well as our local Forbes teams. Over 200 games of netball were played during the day.

A brilliant day of netball was had by all on Sunday, 7th May when Forbes Netball Association staged the annual All Age Regional netball carnival.

The carnival was sponsored by Evolution Mining, and the FNA thank Evolution for their generous support of the association and all the Forbes members. This is the first time a major sponsor has come on board to support the carnival, which was a huge success.

A record 16 teams of 11 years played a full day, showcasing the future talent and love of the game by the future stars.

Ages ranged on the day from 11 years mixed to open ladies, as teams battled it out for the top of the ladder, with 8 separate age groups played.

The day started off with the traditional Nut Bush, at 8:20am, when all the players join together to celebrate the start of the carnival, and the fun that was to be had during the day.

Thanks go to Greg Ridge and the Forbes Shire Council outdoor staff, who prepared Stephen Field for the day. Without the help of these great workers, the carnival would not have been as successful.

The FNA Committee look forward to seeing the rest of their new courts built, as complaints were made over the state of the surface on some of the old courts, which are breaking up and becoming unplayable.

Results of the day:

• 17 rep/opens winners West Wyalong opens, runners up Cowra 17s.

• 15 rep winners Blayney, runners up West Wyalong.

• 14 rep winners Mudgee, runners up Cowra.

• 13 rep winners Dubbo, runners up Yass.

• 12 rep winners Dubbo 13 Dev, runners up Yass.

• 12 years Development winners Dubbo, runners up Bathurst.

• 11 years Gold winners Dubbo White, runners up Yass Blue.

• 11 years Blue winners Orange Orange, runners up Mudgee Purple.

Mayoral Notes

May 12, 2023 by Phyllis Miller, OAM

How disappointing was it to wake up on Monday morning and see the damage to our beloved Gaggin oval? The fields were looking amazing again after last year’s flooding. If you know anything or have any information contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or Forbes Police on 6853 9999.

Damage such as this is so costly – in emotions, in costs of redirecting staff and funds for repairs, and the effects on the various sporting and community groups that use these facilities.

At the moment there are range of career and job opportunities available at Council closing this Sunday and another recruitment campaign with many project, capital and major road repairs works being undertaken. At a time when the cost of living is climbing, a job at Council offers so much – security, attractive wages, opportunities for career advancement, most positions are for a nine-day working fortnight, and flexible work schedules/school hours will be considered for excellent local candidates. More information is on Council’s website.

The cooler months are upon us, definitely time to retire the shorts and whip out the winter woollies. Speaking of cold – have you bought your tickets to Frost and Fire yet? I can’t wait for this annual celebration of winter and the solstice, for the fantastic entertainment and the chance to catch up with family and friends. All the details are on the Amazing Facebook page.

Finally, I wish all our mothers – past, present and future – a happy Mother’s Day for Sunday.

Enjoy your weekend, and God bless.

Success For Phil Maher

May 12, 2023 by By Short Putt

Last Saturday, 6th May, the men’s golf competition was an Individual Stableford. The field of 55 players enjoyed the sunny conditions, but only a few capitalised to produce a good score on the day.

The Div-1 Winner was Phil Maher with 40 points, having birdies on the front-9 and steady play on the back-9. Runner-up was Scott Kirkman with 39 points, and may have done better without a wipe on the 15th.

The Div-2 scores were lower with Dave Rhodes earning a rare win with his 32 points, albeit by count back. His was a display of patience with many missed putts. Runner-up was Mike Prior with 32 points. He was undone by a poor back-9.

The NTP’s went to: 9 th – G Brownhill; 18 th – J Ridley. The Pro Shop Super-pin went to Caleb Hanrahan with a shot to 1.90 metres. He gave thanks to Head Pro Adam whose shot was better but who kindly stepped aside. The ball sweep went to 33 points on count back.

There were quite a few visitors in the field, some of whom had stayed over after the Vets ‘WoG’ and some were here to support their partners in the Ladies Open on Sunday.

The ‘Trilogy of Golf’ began last weekend with the first leg played at the Condobolin Open on Sunday. Forbes players positioned themselves well with John Betland as A- Grade Scratch runner-up on 73, Peter Dawson the Vets Scratch winner, and Reggie Murray the Junior Scratch winner. This weekend we have the Monthly Medal, with a Stableford Medley on Sunday.

Don’t forget, this Sunday is all about mum, and we have a great day planned at the Forbes Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel, with Shane Kerr playing live from noon.

Our Gal – Maddy Hayes

Where were you born? I was born in Forbes.

Were you named after anyone? My name idea came from the cartoon of the French girl named Madeline.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? I feel most accomplished coming to work at Forbes Shire Council and being able to help the community, it is a very rewarding job..

What historical moment stands out most in your memory? Having my 18th birthday during COVID.

Whats the single best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t stress about things you can’t control.

Whats the greatest risk you’ve ever taken? I am not a massive risk taker but I guess if I had to answer I would say everyday has its own risks and rewards.

What are the three things you would take to a deserted island? Food, a friend and a flashlight.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? I would spend it on a pamper day and shopping.

When are you happiest? When I am at the beach.

It’s Time To Care About Aged Care Workers

May 12, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Australia’s largest provider network, UnitingCare Australia has welcomed the Albanese Government’s announcement to give more than 250,000 aged care workers a much needed pay rise.

“Older people and their families, workers providing care, and the families who rely on those workers. This overdue pay rise will go a long way toward dealing with the cost-of-living crisis the lowest paid workers are currently facing,” said UnitingCare Australia National Director, Claerwen Little.

“We know that investing in our aged care workforce is essential for the well-being of older Australians. This increase will help attract and retain skilled workers and we reaffirm our pledge to pass on this additional funding to staff.

“UnitingCare Australia was the first national aged care body to publicly support a 25% pay rise for workers in March 2022. We boldly costed the ask and put our support behind our workforce.

“Millions of Australians depend on the care sector every day to provide vital services that support individuals and communities to thrive. As the largest and fastest growing employer in the country, the opportunity for the care sector to be transformational for Australia’s future is boldly evident. We have an historic opportunity to advance gender equality through a strengthened care workforce,” said Ms Little.

Ensure The Safety Of Your Precious Cargo With A Free Child Restraint Check

May 5, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Authorised Child Restraint Fitters will be in Parkes on Friday 12th May and Forbes on Saturday 13th May.

Parkes and Forbes Shire Councils are ensuring that children are safe and secure when travelling in vehicles with free child restraint checks by Authorised Child Restraint Fitters in Parkes on Friday 12 May 2023 and Forbes on Saturday 13th May.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says that these free child restraint checking days will now be held bi-annually as they are usually well patronised and are important in ensuring the safe travel of young children.

“Due to the success of previous events, we’ve received funding to offer this service twice a year to residents in Parkes and Forbes – one round of checking days will be held in late November/early December and the other round will be in April/May,” Ms Suitor said.

The upcoming child restraint checking days will be held in Parkes on Friday 12 May from 11am – 3pm in the carpark at Kelly Reserve and in Forbes on Saturday 13 May from 10am – 2pm in the Bunnings carpark.

The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk of injury in the event of a crash.

“Most of the restraints we have checked at previous events have had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child – such as tightening and untwisting straps, fitting gated buckles and correcting the seatbelt’s path through the restraint.

“It is important to have your child restraint checked regularly after prolonged use and installed correctly before use to ensure that your precious cargo is safe,” Ms Suitor said.

Bookings are essential – phone 6861 2364 to secure your place. Information about the child restraint laws, the types of restraints and advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will also be available.
