Netball Girls Net Great Result in State Age Championships

July 2, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

netball

Forbes netball girls returned exhausted last Monday evening from a hectic three-day visit to Windsor for the Netball NSW State Age Championships. “We’re all very proud of them,” said Robyn Kenny, publicity officer and coach convenor for the Forbes Netball Association, which this year entered four teams in Division Four age competitions — Under 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s. “I reckon it was our best overall performance yet at the championships, with the Under 13s especially rising to the occasion and improving their position from 14th last year to third.”

The Under 14s held onto their third place from last year, and emerged undefeated on the first and third days. The Under 12s finished sixth, and the Under 15s, who had never played together in this sort of competition finished ninth — all very creditable results in round-robin competitions that all had 18 or 19 teams. Now, said Robyn, the Under 13 and 14 girls would just have to wait and see if their results were good enough to be elevated to Division Three next year.

Some simple steps for when the mercury drops

July 2, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

When the temperatures outside drop, the inside of your house can feel cold, stark and empty, especially after a long day at work. Bring warmth and style back into your home this winter with these cosy home décor suggestions:

Add texture: Use blankets, cushions and throws in cheerful colours and daring patterns to brighten the atmosphere of a dreary room. Transform your entire bedroom’s atmosphere from dull den into a stylish haven
of sleep by layering textured bedding, velvet pillows, knitted blankets and embroidered details. Put down a fluffy floor rug over bare tiles or floorboards, adding warmth and texture underneath your feet — a great way to
keep some heat in and brighten a room for winter. The classic sheepskin rug is another great way to add a textured element to any room, as well as adding more of that much needed warmth.

Maximise your natural light: Use whatever natural light you have available to your advantage by using mirrors on blank walls, above the fireplace or opposite windows. By reflecting natural light the space in your home will be extended. Using mirrors with bold or textured frames can add a nice dramatic effect.

Layer up: Increase the cosiness of a room with layers. Using simple slip covers to cover your dining chairs can add warmth and style to any neutral dining room. Get covers that are easy to take off and put through the washing machine. Block the chilly window drafts with thick drapes in a solid colour which can flatter patterned shades.

Get colourful: Mix it up with a collection of unique and stylish cushions and pillows that accent the existing décor of the room. Pick a colour scheme and complement it with cushion covers flaunting patterns and a thoughtful
variety of hues.

Residents of Forbes and district are lucky to have access to a wide range of excellent and competitive suppliers of home and garden products.
C&D Floorcoverings is a local business which opened its doors in February 2009 at 32 Templar Street. As a result, they now have a huge range of carpets, including the new Godfrey Hirst Luxury products. Also
available are vinyls, laminate floating floors, bamboo and blinds. With the move they also added ceramic tiles to their range. C&D Floorcoverings prides itself on the fact that those who sell the product are also involved in the
installation, thus providing customers with continuity throughout the whole process. Offering a free measure and quote service, Clint and Darren can install the product and believe that providing quality product with top service is essential.

What’s the time Mr Wolf?

July 2, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

What’s the time Mr. Wolf? Answer: Forbes Time. It would seem that the Forbes Post Office clock has decided that it wants to be out of sync with the rest of the world. Today at 8.50am, it was showing as 2.52 and this means its either 6 hours behind or front. Do we want to change this?

“Warming the Cockles of your Heart”

July 2, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

“Warming the Cockles of your Heart” is an old saying that comes out in winter. After having a bowl of delicious pea and ham soup this week at Mezzanine I thought we should call on all the budding Masterchefs in Forbes and
ask them to send in a particular soup recipe that they either love or cook a lot for their family. We will give a $50 voucher for lunch or dinner at Mezzanine for the lucky winner, who will be announced at the end of the month. Maybe a recipe book in the making! Send them to sales@forbesphoenix.com.au.

Question of the Week

July 2, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

What is it that you like about living in Forbes?

clarke

Brian Clarke is Captain of the Forbes Fire Brigade. He’s lived in Forbes all his life and reckons that in a few years he’ll retire here. He likes the town and what it offers, and really can’t see any point in moving somewhere else. His family ties here are very strong and the town has been very solid in providing employment opportunities, firstly
with the Council and then with the fire brigade.

allegri

Brendon Allegri is a Property Sales and Marketing Executive with Ray White Forbes. He is born and bred in Forbes, and, for him too, closeness to family is a huge factor in keeping him there. It’s a small community and provides a nice place to live. The lake provides a great setting for picnics and general relaxation – something that most nearby towns don’t have.

phyllis

Phyllis Miller is Mayor of Forbes Shire and has been here for just over 40 years. She loves the place because of the loyalty that the other residents have shown her in good times and bad, especially when her son John was killed in
a car accident. They obviously love her, too, since she’s never been run to preferences in a ballot for a position
on Council. She’s very proud of what she’s achieved for Forbes, especially in attracting business to the town.
