Healthy Tummies
Healthy tummies need plenty of fibre and water and the right balance of good bacteria. Feed the stomach with a healthy diet high in fibre and vegetables and low in fat, simple sugars and processed foods. Stress can really affect the stomach, causing stomach aches, diarrhoea or constipation.
Maintaining healthy digestion and a balance of good bacteria is central to good
health but many factors can throw out this balance. Inner Health Plus is a pro-biotic supplement developed to help maintain a healthy digestive and immune system and improve your general well being.
Adults require 30g of fibre a day and most people only get about half of this. If you are not getting enough fibre in your diet, taking a fibre supplement such as Benefiber will assist with stomach pains or bloating.
Constipation can be caused by lack of fibre or exercise, stress, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or certain medications. Make sure you stay active, have a high fibre diet and drink plenty of water.
Diarrhoea can be caused by stress, tummy bugs, medications, alcohol, caffeine,
food intolerances, IBS or medical conditions. If diarrhoea presents with fever, blood or mucous in the stools, or with risk of dehydration, seek medical advice promptly.
When suffering from diarrhoea, they key for all ages is to keep hydrated with electrolytes which are found in products such as Hydrolyte. For those suffering from reflux, there are a range of products available including over the counter Nexium 24 hour which provides a once daily dose for lasting relief of frequent
heartburn and acid reflux.

Tony’s Challenge to Help Country Kids
Local Red Bend College Teacher, Tony O’Connell has been running for a cause.
With only five weeks remaining in his challenge Tony has been surprised and inspired by the people who have been getting behind the cause and donating money and offering encouragement.
Thirty seven weeks ago Tony began running 42km per week with the aim of repeating this for 42 weeks. So far he has raised $2500 but would love to be able to reach the $4200 mark to help the Royal Far West continue their great work.
Royal Far West is a non-government organisation that has been providing health services to children living in rural and remote New South Wales since 1924. They work in partnership with families and their local health and education providers to complement existing services within the community.
Every year, thousands of country children who have non-acute developmental, behavioural, learning, emotional and mental health disorders benefit from the integrated clinical and educational care provided by the Royal Far West.
Royal Far West’s team of specialist clinicians work together to deliver a comprehensive range of healthcare services. These services, combined with the educational facilities through the Royal Far West School and accommodation facilities at Drummond House, ensure that we offer children an integrated model of care and the highest level of individual support.
Ongoing communication with families and rural service providers builds on this to support long-term change and best outcomes for the children. For children with special needs a respite program is conducted every January. The
week-long program enables the children and their families to have a supported
‘holiday by the sea’.
Help Tony and the Royal Far West close the gap between health outcomes and
children from rural and remote areas by donating online at http://run.gofundraise.com.au/page/42in42.
Our Gal – Bree Roylance
Bree Roylance
How long have you lived in or around Forbes? I have lived here all of my life except for a couple of years when I was a teenager. I lived in Melbourne then.
Where do you work? I work at Roylance’s Auto One in Forbes.
What do you love most about working at Auto One? We have a really good team environment here, and all the staff get along really well. The customers are friendly, and we get a lot of travellers coming through as well. You get to learn about them and their travels.
How do you start your day? I get up early, go for a walk, then make myself a cuppa, and get the kids ready for school.
What do you do in your spare time? Justin and I race jet boats on Lake Forbes, and we really enjoy doing that. Otherwise I like spending time with the kids and going camping.
How do you like your coffee? I like it white with one sugar, and double shot if it’s a cappuccino.
What makes your day? I love seeing my kids happy and listening to their stories.
Organiser Credits Athleticism in Successful Triathlon
Forbes Triathlon committee member Nick Field has credited the athletes on display at last Sunday’s triathlon, saying their athleticism made for a great spectacle.
A record 150 competitors raced around Lake Forbes during the event, across the three divisions of Olympic, Sprint, Enticer, and Minors. The Olympic division was the main part of the event, and male athlete Nicholas North
took it out in the men’s division.
He ran across the finish line a clear winner by seven minutes, with an overall time of two hours and 36 seconds. He was able to win, individually, the swimming, and came a photo finish second in the cycling, but was beaten in the running by an inspired Robert Woolley, who ran the 10km in just 33 minutes.
Field said North was a very strong athlete in all three disciplines, but it was his 1500m swim in just 19 minutes that got him his win. “He got out to a very, very early lead in the swim and lead all the way. He could have been two to three hundred metres in front at the end of the first leg,” he said.
“He was two minutes ahead. It was a very impressive swim leg for him. But also on the bike, he was second, and second in the run. He’s an outstanding athlete.”
With just a couple of minutes separating most athletes in their finishing times, Field said the standard of racing was second to none. “For some of the locals learning the sport, they were in awe of some of the calibre of the athletes,” he said.
Jessica Richards took out the senior women’s division, finishing at two hours and 16 minutes, including an amazing 40km cycle in one hour and three minutes- beating most of the men. “She beat some of the top blokes on the bike, averaging about 36km/h. It’s amazing,” Field said. Field also thanked all the volunteers on the day, for which the event could not happen without.
Compulsory Third Party / Green Slip Insurance Update
There has been quite a bit of action on the compulsory third-party green slip front of late. Zurich have announced they will no longer write this type of insurance from March 2016 onwards. Their removal from this insurance market is part of their overall transformation plan for Australia and the greater South-East Asia region.
What does this mean for you? With only a limited number of insurance companies now offering Green Slips it means that the market will possibly become less competitive. Zurich were typically very competitive on truck, bus & business motor Green Slips including primary producers seasonal registration.
It will be important for these types of users to source the best cover and pricing options for replacement of their Zurich policies when they fall due over the next 12 months.
Central West Insurance Group can help you source alternative coverage arrangements for your Zurich green slip. Our local staff are able to advise you on the different range of policies including benefits such as at fault
driver protection and CTP gap coverage options.
Come in and see our friendly staff at 74 Rankin Street Forbes for all your insurance needs.
Central West Insurance Group specialise in
• Business Insurance
• Farm / Crop Insurance
• Truck / Machinery Insurance
• Professional Liability
• Home / Landlord / Motor Insurance

SOYA Awards
The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association (SOYA) are delighted with the quality of the nominations they have received for the 2015 Awards with the Annual Presentation Dinner to be held on Saturday 27th February at the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club commencing at 6.30pm.
The Forbes SOYA is a small yet hard working committee dedicated to recognising and celebrating the accomplishments of our local sports men and women as well as administrators and officials. Sport is an important part of life and the awards are an opportunity to pay tribute to the athletes
who excel in their chosen sport and thank and show appreciation to the many volunteers who give their time to ensure that children and adults of all ages have access to some of the best sporting facilities and competitions in New South Wales.
The awards being contested include the Junior and Senior Sportsperson, All
Rounder, Coach/Trainer, Referee/Umpire/Official, Administrator, Team and of course the Forbes Sportsperson and Runner Up for 2015. The overall winner of the Central West Credit Union Monthly Achievers Award will also be announced on the night along with the President’s Award, Phillip Adams Encouragement Award, Merit Awards, School & Special Sports Awards.
The calibre of the nominations received for all the awards was of a very high standard making the job of the independent judging panel extremely difficult.
The SOYA Awards would not be possible without the generous support of our local businesses, allowing Forbes to be one of the last country towns in New South Wales who host a separate sporting awards ceremony. Congratulations to all nominees and the SOYA committee look forward to seeing you, your families and the nominated sporting organisations join us when the 2015
winners are announced.
Mayoral Notes 26/2/2016
International Women’s Day is coming up and this year the Forbes Phoenix is hosting an International Women’s Day Luncheon on Friday, March 11 at the Forbes Services Memorial Club to raise money for the One Girl charity. The guest speaker for the event is One Girl Ambassador Tara Scott and $5 from each ticket sold will go to the charity.
At our Council meeting last Thursday, Council donated $400 to the One Girl charity to show our support for this event. One Girl is a charity that believes that every girl has the right to education with the aim of educating one million girls across Africa by 2020. It is really hard to imagine that not everyone is
entitled to an education because we take it for granted in Australia.
During Thursday’s Council meeting we received a report on the terrific job our Department of Environmental Services and Planning is doing. Paul Bennett’s team of Mat, Scott, Alex, Bri, Rowan, Melissa and Jenny received an excellent report card on the way development applications are processed.
Council also resolved on Thursday to work in partnership with CanAssist to host an information night for prostate cancer awareness in Forbes. We will be getting together with CanAssist in the near future to work out how best to present the information to the community of Forbes.
Council’s Third Bore construction is well underway and is due for completion in mid-2016. We had a visit of the site on Monday with our Local Member Andrew Gee also attending. The bore is located on the Lachlan Valley Way and its completion will sure up the water supply.
Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.
Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

Increased water security is a step closer with construction well underway on Forbes Shire Council’s Third Bore project. Mayor Phyllis Miller welcomed the project and said the Third Bore will provide certainty in the event of severe drought, mechanical failure or contamination. The project, located within the road reserve on the Lachlan Valley Way, will be completed by mid-2016.
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer to help keep the Forbes Museum open? If you are interested, please phone 68516600 between 2pm and 4pm daily or call into the museum in Cross Street during these times. If there are any groups that would like to book in to look at the museum,
please make contact in the same way.
Tears of laughter, and not pain, are likely to be shed when Stand Up for Mental Health comedians Lulu Joy and Jon Shapiro present as part of the All Tears are Different mental health, drug and alcohol forum. The forum will be held at the Forbes Services Club on Friday March 4 from 6pm. Both comedians have experienced mental illness, but now use their experiences as material for their stand-up routines. The event will be free. For interest to help with catering, please email schrystall@lyndon.org.au.
Forbes Showgirl competitor Stacey Clarke narrowly missed selection in the
state Showgirl final last Saturday at the Zone 6 finals in Parkes. She told The
Forbes Phoenix she enjoyed the day, and her performance on horse back, in the luncheon and the face-to-face interviews in the morning, but felt she was let down by her on-stage interview in the evening. Grenfell’s Grace Eppelstun, Dubbo’s Camilla Kenny, and Young’s Emily Madge won the event.
The Forbes Magpies will take on the Young Cherry Pickers in their first trial match of the season tonight at the West Wyalong Knockout commencing at 6.30pm. The Magpies Old Boys (MOB) will be taking a bus for interested supporters. The bus will leave the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club at 5pm. Seats are limited to 28 so it will be a first in best dressed arrangement. Our ladies kick off their season as well when they too compete at West Wyalong on Saturday from 12.30pm.
The Free Cuppa for the Driver scheme is an initiative of 18 local councils and the Roads and Maritime Service to promote fatigue awareness on most roads in west and south-west NSW. Sixty two businesses are poised and ready to serve drivers with a free cup of tea or coffee. Drivers over the next three months are being encouraged to stop, take a break and receive a free cuppa.
Local Priest Promoted to National Chaplain
Forbes St John Anglican Church Parish Priest Geoffrey McAuliffe was inducted as the National Chaplain-elect in a ceremony at the church last Sunday.
He will officially become the next National Chaplain, under the board of the ‘Order of St Luke’, next year, after spending 12 months under the wing of the current National Chaplain. The board elects a new person to take this position every three years, but with no nominees immediately forthcoming in 2014, Mr McAuliffe decided to nominate himself last year, and was officially inducted as the elect to the position at the weekend.
Bishop of Bathurst Ian Palmer and Reverend Trevor Buttler made the trip to Forbes to induct Mr McAuliffe. He was persuaded to come out of retirement two years ago to take up the Parish Priest role at St Johns. Despite this he said his past experiences working as a chaplain in ‘chapters’ of seven
people meant he was capable of doing the job.
“I’ve worked in the formation of four different chapters over the years [since 1982], sometimes as the prime mover, and other times responding to the encouragement of others,” he said. “I’ve been a convenor (chairperson of a
chapter) a couple of times too.” “The ceremony was the culmination of a big month at St Johns. We had the Festival of Praise, followed by a mission with Defence Force Bishop Ian Lambert, so we’ve had three big weeks.”
In his new role, Mr McAuliffe will lead the ‘healing ministry’, which in Christianity is a spiritual practice of physical, mental, or emotional healing.
“As National Chaplain-elect, I’m under the direction of the National Chaplain, so what I would do is if there is something that requires his presence and he can’t be there, I would go,” he said. “When I become National Chaplain, one
thing I would like to do is try to find a way of interesting more people, and younger people, to be involved in the Order of St Luke…most of the Order at the moment is old, even older than me,” he joked.
While his new role will see him travel to other towns and cities in Australia from time to time, he will remain the Parish Priest at St Johns for the time being. He said he was extremely proud to be inducted as a Forbes local, with people coming to town from all corners of the country to witness the occasion.
While he has come out of retirement, he added he looked forward to what the future holds for him, despite his second retirement being at least another three years away as he works through his term as National Chaplain.
