Andrews Family Excels at Easter Bowls

March 31, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Scooter Andrews

The Forbes Sport & Recreation Club hosted the Annual Easter Lawn Bowls Carnival over the weekend with thirty-four teams from all over NSW competing in the Pairs and Fours competitions. A large majority of the teams hailed from the Sydney Metropolitan area and were impressed with the excellent facilities the Forbes club had to offer. The competition is for all male teams and Forbes was well represented in all divisions.

The Andrews family featured strongly in the pairs and the fours with Jarrod
Andrews & Grandfather Don Drabsch making it to the Semi-finals of the pairs along with Mitchell Andrews who teamed up with Bruce Williams, also making it to the Semifinals. Jarrod and Mitchell then competed in the Fours with their father Scott and Grandfather, Don Drabsch and made their way to the final on Sunday evening. Spectators were kept entertained with some very strong bowls but a very strong and slick Belrose Team edged out the locals to win.

Parkes Décor Shoppe Your Customer Service Specialist

March 31, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Parkes Decor Shoppe has been a cornerstone of design in Parkes
that has spanned four decades after it was established at the southern
end of Clarinda Street in 1975. Originally a wallpaper and lighting
centre, the business moved with the times, beginning to sell curtains,
blinds and awnings after wallpaper began to go out of fashion. Nowadays,
window furnishings consist of a major part of the shops operations.
Parkes Décor Shoppe is the brainchild of Barry and Margaret
Robinson and although Barry sadly passed away ten years ago the
business is still going strong with Margaret at the helm of an excellent
team of four casual staff.
For 20 years she has regularly covered areas like Peak Hill, Cudal,
Orange, Grenfell, Young, Eugowra, Forbes, Condobolin and smaller
outlying areas. “We pride ourselves on our solid customer service
and attention to detail,” says Margaret. “It’s what we are best at, we
follow up on everything and I have great staff.”
“The service we offer is great as we’ve been here for 40 years, and
over many years we’ve completed a large number of commercial and
domestic jobs.”
Big changes are coming in July, as the business rebrands itself. It
has already been repainted, and has a new website. The inside of
the store will be re-fitted as well. Parkes Décor is a member of Lighting
Network, and supply lots of local electricians. They have a deal
with ceiling fans at present, with a good warranty for them.
For more information head over and have a chat with Margaret and
her team at 202-204 Clarinda Street Parkes.

Wildcare Desperate For More Volunteers

March 31, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Wildcare

Young Wildcare volunteer Lynda Oehm has been volunteering on and off for the last 30 years for Wildcare, and knows a thing or two about looking after kangaroos. In fact, she has looked after around 300 injured kangaroos and kangaroo joeys in that time, but with very few volunteers in the Central West caring for Wildcare at the moment, she said she is inundated with animals.

Close to Forbes, there are currently volunteers based in Goologong, but none in Forbes itself. Wildcare is an independent organisation that looks after injured wildlife, with carers that volunteer for them being specially trained to look after different types of animals. Wildcare is a 24/7 service, and generally,
takes injured wildlife into its care when members of the public, local rangers and local emergency services report the injured animals.

Animals’ injuries are assessed in the first instance, with veterinary attention brought in if required, and then volunteer carers look after the animals and maintain their health until they are assessed to be ready for the wild again. On average, the service receives around 2000 calls a year. Common circumstances
include dog and cat attacks on wildlife, motor vehicle collisions, and animals getting caught in netting or fencing.

More miscellaneous situations involve wombats getting stuck in bathtubs, brown snakes in rat traps, and possums in car bonnets. Ms Oehm specialises in looking after injured kangaroos and wallabies, and after years of constantly having new animals come to her, said it was important other people come on board.

“Looking after these kangaroos isn’t like having a pet. They’re not pets. It’s like raising a child. They need full time care,” she said. “We desperately need more volunteer carers, especially for birds, possums and reptiles. It’s becoming too much for the four of us that do it at the moment.” Wildcare liaison officer for Young, Sandra Latham, said licensed shooters (euthanasia) were also being sought.

Anyone interested in assisting Wildcare is asked to call 6299 1966.

Another Successful Year For SOYA

March 31, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association enjoyed another very successful year in 2015. Many of the bodies of the sport played within the town or in its surrounding areas, nominated individuals or teams for our annual presentation awards night held in February. Those sporting bodies that don’t nominate any individual or team for the relevant award, I believe miss the opportunity to congratulate them for their input into their sport throughout the year. To be nominated by your peers must surely be a highlight of your sporting year.

Firstly, may I thank the SOYA committee (be it small in number) for their hard work, support and general good nature that has made the years involvement a pleasure. Special thanks must go to Anita Morrison for her outstanding work as Secretary and Sue Uphill in her role as Treasurer. As I stated in previous years, their organisational skills are an absolute credit to them, and a bonus
to us. Secondly, thanks to all the sporting clubs that support our organisation.

Thirdly, thank you to all the local businesses who so generously supported us
financially throughout the year and on our presentation night. Without your support we would not be able to exist. Fourthly, to the judges. A difficult job, but done with what I believe to be very fair and unbiased decisions.

Whilst talking of our presentation night, may I thank “The Girls” for running the night on their own due to all the “Male” committee members having work commitments out of Forbes on the evening. The guest speaker was well received, we thank Anita again for organising, Tom Cusack and wish him well
in his pursuit of glory at the Rio Olympics as a member of the Australian Rugby 7’s team.

Lastly, thanks and congratulations to all the sportsmen and women of Forbes for being such “Good Sports”. Hopefully gaining the enjoyment and satisfaction that sport is able to provide makes it all worthwhile for the
hard work at training and playing. Lets hope that 2016 unearths much sporting talent that we can celebrate at our next SOYA Awards Night.

More than one in three people 65 years or older fall at least once a year and aged care residents are even more at risk with up to half of these residents falling at least once a year. The importance of involving carers and patients in falls prevention is highlighted on 1 April, April Falls Day® with the theme – Share the Care: Falls Prevention is everyone’s business®.

Falls prevention activities are planned throughout the Health District during April and are being supported by Health Promotion and the Carer Support Program. These range from morning tea celebrations to information displays and exercise demonstrations. April Falls Day – Share the Care: The Canowindra Community Health Centre is hosting a Falls Prevention Morning Wednesday 6th April 2016 10am-1pm at the Canowindra Services & Citizens Club Hall. It will feature local exercise demonstrations from the Tai Chi & Rehab/Fitness classes, as well as information and display stands focusing on vision, suitable footwear and product aids to assist with falls prevention.

The community is invited along for the opportunity for a free falls/balance assessment from local health professionals. Clinical Excellence Commission, Falls Prevention Program Leader, Lorraine Lovitt said there was a particular focus on staff engaging with carers and patients to prevent falls and keep older people safe. “Carers are an important part of the care team in NSW public hospitals and other health settings,” Ms Lovitt said. Important information carers can share with health workers includes:
• Recent slips, trips or falls
• Changes in memory or thinking at home or in hospital
• Personal habits and history of help support and settle
• Changes in medications
• Personal aids used (glasses, hearing aids, walking sticks)
• Need for assistance with toilet, shower or self-care
