The Lachlan Floods Of 22

November 25, 2022 by Nev Molloy

The Lachlan’s seen some mighty floods, since records first were wrote

And those along the river flats, make sure they own a boat

We’re seeing now the worst flood the locals ever knew

They’re saying it’s the equal to the one in fifty two

The river now is angry, and our catchment needs relief

A wall of water rushing down, it’s just beyond belief

Cowra was the first to feel the rivers mighty sting

That water from Wyangala was like a living thing

The next in line Eugowra,

the very worst they say

An inland sea came rushing down, and washed the town away

Tore houses from foundations to make impair complete

And washed these buildings blocks away to somewhere down the street

And then it left a war zone, for some a living hell

And if the town can be rebuilt, it’s still too soon to tell

Loss of life can’t be replaced, and love ones mourn their loss

The water took what was their life, natures still our boss

And still the flood kept

rushing on an angry evil beast

Looking for a victim, and somewhere else to feast

And sure enough old Forbes was there, and it was on alert

Regardless of their efforts though, this flood is gonna hurt

The Forbes lagoon was filling up, and spreading through the town

Despite a million sandbags, old Forbes was going down

With water quickly rising, the town was cut in three

And aerial photograph, would show an inland sea

Then after Forbes was Condo, and on and on it went

To every town still in its path, from hell where it was sent

But what about our heroes, the ones we can’t forget

Where ever help was needed, they were there I bet

Heroes to Boys in the Bush, that group who help us all

Of course our mighty SES, I hope they’re standing tall

Then the army came along to lend a helping hand

For helicopter rescue, and filling bags with sand

There’s many more to mention, but space just don’t allow

Selfless acts of kindness, these folk should take a bow

The way we stand in crises, working side by side

makes me feel quite humble, my chest swells out with pride

It shows the best in people, why can’t this always be

Not only when the flood returns, to form that inland sea

Well, l’ll leave it there, with peace of mind we watch the waters go

And hope our Lachlan River keeps a calm and peaceful flow ….

Three National Medals For Trundle Champs

November 25, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Toby Morgan with his gold medal, and Isabella Skipworth with one of her medals in Brisbane.

Two Trundle para-athletics champs shone at the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championship in Brisbane last weekend coming home with a haul of three medals.

Toby Morgan is the national champion winning a gold medal in the 800m for 10-year-old multiclass event for boys, whileIsabella Skipworth won a silver in discusand bronze in shot put.

It was an amazing experience for the two students where they made lots of new friends and incredible memories. The opening ceremony was last Thursday and ended with a closing ceremony on Monday. The participants also had an opportunity to access equipment and technology utilised for talent identification for the 2023 Olympics. A fun part of the event was swapping pins with competitors from other states, which they then wore on their hats.

Toby is a student at Parkes East Public School, and Isabella attends St Patrick’s Primary School in Trundle.

Titanic Task Ahead After Flood Destruction

November 25, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

AN ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS… The ADF and loads more volunteers helped out at Forbes Public School on Tuesday, while the students have been accommodated at Forbes High School. Right: Principal Meg Staples had a huge task managing the clean-up.

As the flood water started receding this week Forbes started the mammoth task of cleaning up for the second time in two weeks.

A horror picture of the devastation and destruction were unfolding with everything covered in mud and debris, but fortunately the pure determination and grit of the community did not wash away.

“It is all a bit overwhelming,” said Forbes Public School principal Meg Staples on Tuesday still managing a smile as she managed over 100 volunteers, including parents, teachers, ADF, RFS and Forbes Shire Council volunteers.

“We prepared really well,” she said, after the school was inundated only 11 days earlier, but it was still a huge task to get about 17 rooms, including the front office, kindergarten classroom, toilets and library, cleared and deep cleaned. Carpets and nails had to be removed, floors, walls and halls washed and everything sorted.

“All the support has been absolutely fantastic,” said Meg looking at the beehive of activity to get the school ready for the kids to return as soon as possible.

The same intensity of activity was seen all over town at businesses, sport clubs and private homes. “We did not lose anything really valuable, but there is so much cleaning to be done,” said Rex Barton at the Forbes Historical Museum. He was very grateful for the help they had received from the ADF and RFS on Monday.

“The old pieces of furniture have done really well, but we have some display cabinets damaged as the water came up to about half a metre right through the museum and higher in the back rooms.”

The plan is to only reopen next year to give the volunteers enough time to get it all back to normal.

Ken South was helping at the Forbes Vet Clinic where his wife Sue Brown works. The clinic had moved to temporary accommodation to continue its work. “There’s been some losses, but not as much as some other businesses,” said Ken. “Everyone has been so terrific in coming to help, including the ADF and RFS.”

Forbes resident Peter Walsh also had some assistance from the RFS on Tuesday to wash all the mud from his partner’s house in Renfree Street. “This flood just beat us. For pensioners the loss is just devastating.”

Peter said although they had prepared really well, things like the kitchen and bathroom cupboards would still need to be replaced. “There is a lot of assistance offered to farmers and businesses, but I’m not sure what is on offer to us.”

Despite all the mud and damage, Peter was happy to see the return of frogs in the garden. “We’ve not had them for years, and we found some crayfish in the house!”

Flood In Focus

Tim Welsh and Luke Evans are part of the Forbes Shire Council team doing a massive clean-up and recovery job all over town. They were busy working on the flattened fence at the Forbes pool on Tuesday.

Brian And John Win Major Pairs Final

November 25, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

The 2022 Major Pairs Final in Parkes was played in perfect conditions on Saturday and was worthy of a live television broadcast.

John Wright and Brian Townsend were the first team into the final, while Mick Simpson and Mark Dwyer were the odds-on favourites. The scores were even with just one shot the difference until the 14th end, where John and Brian picked up 4 shots, to lead by 16 shots to 12.

Mick and Mark won the next 4 ends, levelling the scores, and managed to claw ahead to lead by 1 on the 20th end. Skipper Brian had the last bowl of the match, needing 2 shots to win the title. Mick and Mark were holding 2 shots and had the jack covered, and it seemed they had the Championship in the bag.

Brian and John had the best 2 back bowls. Brian bowled a pearler, prising out the jack, resting it closest to his back bowls –winning the match by 1 shot with the last bowl, final score 19 shots to 18. Congratulations to all 4 bowlers on an extraordinary and skilful Pairs Final, enjoyed by a large crowd.

Freak Flood Worst Ever In Parkes

November 18, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

FLOOD RAVAGED… The Billabong Creek bridge on the Orange road suffered severe damage as flood waters raged over it on Monday morning. Only one lane of traffic is allowed across the bridge at the moment. (Photo: NSW RFS- Parkes HQ Brigade)

A shock wave rippled through the community of Parkes on Monday as the extent of the worst flood to ever hit the town unfolded.

Torrential rain across the Central West on Sunday with 106mm measured at the Parkes airport created conditions for a ‘freak flood’ which inundated hundreds of homes. Residents on both sides of Billabong Creek and further away towards Kelly Road woke up around 4:30am with water running through their homes.

All the main roads into Parkes were closed on Monday and the town was cut in two as the Billabong Creek bridge on the Orange road was severely damaged. Emergency services were only able to reach flood affected residents by Monday night.

With water gushing 1.7m over the Lake Endeavour spillway, and every other little creek feeding into it filled to capacity, the 4m water marker at the creek crossing on the Eugowra road was completely submerged. The water spread far over the creek banks creating flood plains in places people would never have imagined in their wildest dreams it would get flooded. A resident who had just built a new home on Emerton Road said the water came about 1.5m higher than the one in 100-year flood event level.

Many homes along Nash Street were also inundated and parts of the road was closed because of flooding.

Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith said the devastation was unbelievable. He praised the community for the kindness shown in helping each other saying it was really inspiring.

Lots Of Cheers For Top Hockey In Parkes

November 18, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Local fans were stoked to see Hockeyroo Mariah Williams play at home on Saturday.

A good crowd of almost 900 were treated to top class hockey in Parkes on Saturday when several Kookaburras and Hockeyroos were playing in the first ever Hockey One match in a regional centre.

“It was just fantastic. We had a good crowd and quality games,” said event manager Ian Westcott.

The second match of the day featured local star Mariah Williams playing for NSW Pride. She gave her local fans lots to cheer about as her team beat Canberra Chill 6 – 0. In the men’s game Canberra Chill came out on top with a 3 – 0 win.

The men’s and women’s matches were the final games for the second season of the Sultana-Bran Hockey One League and decided the make-up of the final series.

Mariah said before the match she was a bit nervous as usual, but it was great to be playing at home. She was handing out signatures before and after the game to young players who were very excited to meet her.

Ian said Parkes Hockey Incorporated had received lots of positive comments from the players and from Parkes supporters. World Hockey Player Award recipient Jamie Dwyer, who was guest speaker at a Celebration of Hockey dinner on Saturday night, said in his speech what a great event it was and that these competitions should be held in more regional centres.

‘The Worst Flood I’ve Ever Seen’

November 18, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Less than two weeks after the worst flood in decades, Forbes residents watched the water rise again this week to flood levels predicted to reach the record of 1952.

At the time of going to print the water had already gone past the previous week’s levels and was on its way to the predicted 10.8m. On Wednesday morning about two-thirds of the town was inundated.

“Residents can’t believe it could happen twice in such a short period of time, but they are resilient and everyone was working to fill sandbags,” Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller told ABC TV on Tuesday morning. “This is the worst flood I’ve ever seen. It is really heartbreaking. Our farming community and businesses are suffering terribly. We’ve got the Newell Highway closed, it’s terrible for the economy of a small rural town.”

Residents poured their hearts out on social media echoing the Mayor’s feelings. A post by Forbes Medicine & Mind read: “It’s really cruel doing this again 11 days after the last flood. There is so much uncertainty. So much destruction already and we know there is still so much more water to come. There is so much loss. So much grief.”

The RFS had to rescue 14 people from the roof of the Plainsmans Hotel in Forbes overnight on Tuesday, while an elderly couple, their daughter and their two dogs were rescued by a helicopter when their home was threatened by rising waters.

The SES again had to transfer critical health workers to the hospital via boat as it was the only means for them to get to work.

Recovery work from the previous flood was also hampered on Monday when the Newell Highway was closed between Forbes and Parkes and emergency crews could not make it to town. The rescue helicopters were also stuck at the Parkes airport as the Billabong Creek bridge was badly damaged in flash flooding at Parkes early Monday morning.

Team Hampton Dominates

November 18, 2022 by Marty Tighe

CHAMPIONSHIP BOWLS

The Minor Triples match played at the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club on Thursday with Ian Simpson, John Wright and Brian Hampton playing Mal Porter, Chris Harrison and Tony Riordan was a one-sided match. Team Hampton skipped away to a dominant lead of 15 shots to 1 after 8 ends, eventually winning by 30 shots to 11.

THURSDAY SOCIAL BOWLS

The game of the day was the tussle between Col Hayward and Gary McPhee against Geoff Freeman and Brett Frame. Col and Gary eventually won the game by 1 shot – 20 to 19 – despite being scoreless after 4 ends, and then were down by 3 shots, with 3 ends to play against quality opposition. The old master Col Hayward rose to the occasion, playing great lead bowls to set up the win, as he and Gary picked up 6 shots to 2 over the last 3 ends, winning by 1 shot.

SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS

18 Bowlers dodged the storms and took their chances during the rain breaks to play 2 games of triples and 3 games of pairs.

Steve Turner pushed his big rig out to the rink, hitching John Niddrie onto his A trailer and proceeded to dominate Ron Hornery and Tony Riordan in a way sided game, winning easily.

George Bradley continued his good form of late, leading for Col Hayward against Col Woods and John Ward. George and Col won 8 of 9 ends in the middle stages of the game, consolidating their early lead, the ‘wicks’ deserted Wardy for a change, enabling Team Hayward to win 21 shots to 15.
