Two Hot Scores In Stableford Competition

December 18, 2020 By editor

On Saturday, the Men’s Competition was an Individual Stableford event, sponsored by Knights Fabrications, with 65 players participating. Two players managed scores of 40 points or better

The Division 1 winner was Andrew Grierson with 40 points, constructed by a balance of birdies to offset bogeys. Runner-up was Niel Duncan with 38 points, whose round was spoiled by wipes on the 6th and 7th holes.

In Division 2, Ben Coles recorded the best score of the day with 43 points. Runner-up was Max Haley, with 37 points, who started quietly then scored steadily.

The ball sweep went to 33 points on count back, check in the Pro Shop to see if you earned one. The NTP’s went to 9th, G Hooper, 18th, J Bernardi, who both converted for two’s. The Third Hole Super Pin went to Todd Callaghan. The only other player to score a “2” was Brodie Hodges on the 18th. Visitors included Robert Hey and Wayne Powter from Parkes.
Numbers were too small for a competition on Sunday, but the players deserve some encouragement, with Ray Taylor and Peter Grayson, both on 38 points, sharing the balls.

Over the Christmas break there will be Stableford Medleys on Saturday, 26, Sunday, 27 and Monday, 28 December. The first competition day will be the Monthly Medal on 2 January.

Players are also being called to nominate now for the Pennants teams, which is due to commence in February 2021. Con- tact John Betland if you are interested or put your name on the sheet on the notice board in the Pro Shop.

Saturday, 19 December is the 18-Hole Stableford ‘Ham Day’. This may be your last chance to do well for Christmas dinner. Sunday, 20 December is a Stableford Medley.

Congratulations to Maci Kennedy, who won the Forbes Phoenix Christmas Colour-In Competition.

Forbes Christmas Colour-In Competition Winner: This year the Phoenix received a delightfully overwhelming response to our Christmas Colour-In Competition. Judging was not easy with so many colourful and creative entries from ages one to 12. The winner of the competition is Maci Kennedy, aged six. Well done to all of the talented children who sent in their work.

Forbes RV Dump Point Relocation: For travellers to the Forbes region, please be advised the RV Dump Point has been relocated from Lions Park to the new location at Junction Street, near the Short Stay Parking area. RV Dump Points are sites especially designed for Recreational Vehicles (RVs) to dispose of their waste, including Grey and Black Water, and Sewerage in an environmentally safe way.

Johnny Woods Crossing Footpath Dismantled: Forbes Shire Council closed the Johnny Woods Crossing from Thursday, 10 December to Friday, 11 last week for the removal of the raised footpath. The structure had significant concrete cancer damage and as there is a path adjacent to the raised footpath, a decision was made to remove the structure. As part of the approved Lake Forbes Activation Plan, this area will receive new pedestrian and cycling paths on either side of the road and new wetland edge plantings will improve aesthetics, water quality and habitat.

11 Days Of Double Demerits For Christmas Holidays

December 18, 2020 By editor

Sergeant Martin Ling warns motorists that all police cars are mobile random breath and drug testing units and that all available highway patrol officers will be on our roads over the holiday period.

Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Councils in conjunction with NSW Police are reminding motorists to drive safely and to remember that double demerits are in place for 11 days over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Double demerits start on Thursday, 24 December 2020 and run through to Sunday, 3 January 2021 and apply for all speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences.

Drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a $457 fine and 10 demerits.

Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said that “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, we all have a part to play in driving down the road toll.”

“Too often, people think it is ok for them to quickly check a text or drive faster than the speed limit because they know the road, or they get behind the wheel when they are tired or have had a few drinks.”

“We want everyone to have a happy and safe Christmas with their families, please obey the road rules and drive safely,” Melanie said.

With state borders now open and COVID restrictions further eased in NSW, authorities are expecting traffic to increase over the holiday period as people drive to see their loved ones and have a break. With that increase in traffic, comes increased risk of a crash.

NSW Police’s Central West Highway Patrol Sergeant Martin Ling said, “Statistics show that there’s a 30% reduction in casualty crashes when double demerit points are in play.”

“The road toll usually makes the headlines for all the wrong reasons at this time of year. Let’s get it in print for the right reason this year by recording a fatality-free holiday period,” Martin said.

The Year That Was

December 18, 2020 By editor

Many year 12 students from Forbes High School have received early admission into various Universities.

It was a year like no other. In January Forbes High School (FHS) started hearing rumours of a Novel Coronavirus, next thing we knew, the World Health Organisation was calling it a pandemic. Scott Morrison was on the television talking about restrictions, and Gladys Berejiklian was telling school students to stay home if possible. And so began remote learning

Learning from home was not always easy, staying motivated and focused was a challenge. Despite this, Year 12 stayed on task and got through the year with the support of staff and families. Luckily, they are a small group and were able to return to face-to-face teaching early into term two, right in time to begin preparing for the trial HSC. Despite the disruptions to their learning, FHS Year 12 students were still able to participate and engage with a wide variety of the regularly scheduled events for Year 12 at FHS.

Despite the challenges associated with physical distancing and restrictions associated with Year 12 final assemblies, FHS ended term three by saluting the class of 2020 with an adjusted ceremony. Year 12 students were delighted to have a recorded ceremony to share with their families, who despite not being in attendance, surprised the students with recorded messages from loved ones and extended family.
Led by their student leadership team,

Captains Jack Cole and Amy Gallagher, and Vice Captains, Connor Greenhalgh and Kaitlin Turner, this cohort of students have challenged the status quo in more ways than one this year. They made it through their final year of school amid a global pandemic, completed the HSC, and celebrated their graduation in a way never experienced before. They have all demonstrated that with perseverance, respect and positivity you can accomplish anything, and they have surely accomplished a lot. Congratulations, Forbes High School Class of 2020.

New Free Cuppa For The Driver Website

December 11, 2020 By editor

A new website has been launched for the Free Cuppa for the Driver scheme.

The website lists the participating businesses, features a new frequently asked questions page, and provides information about managing driver fatigue and much more.

Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says the new website will be of tremendous value to visiting drivers and participating businesses alike.

“The new website will help to make it easier for drivers to find a participating business. The full list of the businesses participating in 2021 is now live.”

“So, go ahead and see who’s participating in your area and support your local businesses that support road safety,” said Melanie. The scheme, which has been operating since 2010, runs from 1 March to 31 May annually and offers free cuppas to visiting drivers at participating businesses.

In 2021, there will be 105 businesses in 52 towns across 16 local Councils, stretching from Moree in the North, down to the Victorian border, west to Wentworth as far East as the lower Blue Mountains.

Visit www.freecuppa.com.au to plan where to stop over the holidays.

Bec Cheney: Getting together with family.

Mayoral Notes

December 11, 2020 By editor

You can really feel the Christmas spirit in Forbes, can’t you? I’m loving all the shop windows dressed up and inviting people to shop in our wonderful town. This week we have shared a sneak peek on social media, inside all the wonderful retailers in town and what they have in store this Christmas. We really do have the best shopping in the state and I say we are the “retail hub” of the Central West.

Just an update on the Heated Pool. The initial prices have come in higher than budgeted for, so the project is now under-going re-scoping to fit within the budget. In the New Year we hope to have plans in place, and we will keep you updated as we progress.

This week we will be removing the Johnny Woods raised crossing. The structure is showing its age and has extensive damage. It is also dangerous in numerous ways especially during a flood. The concrete will be crushed and reused in the road base for future projects. This is all part of our Lake Forbes Activation Project and 2021.

Road safety is something I ask you all to keep in mind this Christmas and New Year period, I know a lot of you will be travelling to see family and friends over this time. Do not drink and drive, and if tired please pull over for a break and refresh before getting back behind the wheel.

That’s all for this week.
God Bless.

Windy Day For Monthly Medal

December 11, 2020 By editor

Geoff Betland driving off the 12th tee.

The Saturday Men’s Competition was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions. The field of 65 players battled strong winds, which made for average scores.

The A-Grade winner was John Zannes, with a nett 71 after going out early. Runner-up was Alf Davies with 72 nett, getting there on count back from Wade Ritchie, a new member of the Club.

The B-Grade was won by Nick Greenhalgh with the equal best score of the day, 70 nett. Runner-up on count back was Phil Wells. The C-Grade was won by Peter Tisdell, also an early starter, with 72 nett and just ahead of Bruce Squires on 73 nett. Bruce snuck past Geoff Drane on count back.

The NTP’s went to 9th W Ritchie, 18th J Zannes, while the third Hole Super Pin went to Greg Webb, less than a metre from the hole. Visitors were Brad Hazell from Hervey Bay and Damien Noll from Condobolin.

An award is needed for Alex McKinnon who had the worst day of any golfer, ever. He struck trees, went out of bounds, had rebounds that went behind him or onto the wrong fairway, and even managed a few ‘shanks’, but he finished.

The Sunday Stableford Medley field was a small mix of local and Condobolin players. Brett Thomas took the day with 34 points. There was no ball sweep and unfortunately no NTP’s.

Head Pro Adam had his last Junior coaching clinic last week and was pleased with the attendance again. He intends to run a Golf Camp in January, and to continue the Junior Coaching through the first term. Contact the Pro Shop for details.

Saturday, 12 December is an Individual Stableford, sponsored by Knights Fabrications. Sunday, 13 December is a Stableford Medley.

Let’s Future Proof Our Youth

December 11, 2020 By editor

Forbes Shire Councils’ Youth Action Team have announced their launch of their Adulting 101 program for 2021. The program is aimed at supporting local young people to increase their skills and to help them gain employment.

“The Council received the Youth Opportunities grant from the State Government to deliver this amazing program,” said Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM. “Adulting can be hard and the courses provided in the program can help up-skill our young people and prepare them for future career pursuits.”

“The program includes things from basic computer skills through to barista training and defensive driving,” Phyllis continued. “These programs are a great way for our young people to develop skills to give them the confidence to take the next step into the world after leaving school, and gain employment.”

The free program begins in February 2021 and runs over ten weeks. The course intake is small with only twenty spaces that are available to Forbes youth.

Weekly sessions will be presented to the children with relevant guest speakers providing essential expertise and knowledge.

“This awesome opportunity is much sought after, so I encourage you to get your applications in,” Phyllis said. “Class sizes are kept small to ensure the kids have that essential one-on-one experience with the instructors.”

“Life skills like this set the youth up to be able to be independent and navigate life, as the saying goes; never stop learning, because life never stops teaching.”

Registration is essential for this program. For more information, please contact Sarah Williams, Forbes Shire Council’s Youth Officer on 6850 2300 for more details.
