Fourball Event Features A Close Finish

March 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday it was a 4BBB 18-hole Stableford, sponsored by C & D Floorcoverings, in which the teams of 28 pairings fought hard so that a count-back was needed to decide the winners. Three teams finished on 48 points.

The winners were the pairing of Brodie Hodges and Steve Grallelis. Steve played his usual safe, down the middle style, while Brodie used his length to good scoring advantage. Runners-up on count back were Clayton Alley and visitor Russ Gercken, from Catalina. They snuck in ahead of Richard Nixon and Niel Duncan, who once again played well but missed the prizes. The ball sweep went to 46 points, being distributed to: 48 – B Hodges/ Grallelis, C Alley/R Gercken, R Nixon/N Duncan; 47 – McAuliffe/McDade, N McMillan/ Carpenter; 46 – Andy Cogswell/M Browne, T Callaghan/D Bayley.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Kirkman; 18th – R Gercken. Both got their 2’s. The visitors included Russ Gercken (Catalina CC), Peter McDade (Lismore), Allan Daubaras and Peter Burgess (both Nelson Bay GC).

On Sunday, the regular Stableford Medley was contested by only a small field. Scoring was difficult. The winner was Shane Sallaway with 35 points. There was no runner- up or ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Sallaway; 18th – N McMillan.

Also on Sunday, the Forbes Division 4 team was in the CWDGA Inter-Club Pennants finals played at Cowra. The course was in good condition, and the greens were slick.

Unfortunately, the Division 4 team were unable to capture their winning form against a strong Wellington team. The end result was a 4.5/0.5 win to Wellington, who avenged the defeat Forbes had inflicted on them in 2017.

The best Forbes performer on the day was Garry Pymont, who finished all square on the 18th, and with the match decided shared the point. The other team members battled bravely, often relishing the support by Frank Hanns as he zipped around the course.

Thank you to all who participated in the 2018 Pennants and to those who organised the teams. We look forward to success next year.

The Forbes Veterans ‘Week of Golf’ set for 23rd to 27th April, is fast approaching. We urgently need nominations from local players, so please get a nomination in as soon as you can. Forms are in the Pro Shop.
