Cancer Awareness Golf Day

September 30, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Parkes Services Club (PSC) is the main sponsor of the ‘Awareness’ Charity Golf Day on Saturday, 8th October. (L-R) are Stefan Mikita (PSC), Dorothy Charlton (PSC), Chris Dunn (PPCG) and Michael Lynch (PPCG).

When you learn that 50 men are diagnosed every day with prostate cancer and that ten men die every day in Australia, you get some idea of the enormity of the disease.

In an effort to make men more aware of this cancer, the Parkes Prostate Cancer Group is having an ‘Awareness’ Charity Golf Day on Saturday, 8th October on the renovated course. The main competition will be a 4 person Ambrose with a maximum handicap of 30. There will also be a longest drive competition for men and women, nearest the pins and a few other surprises.

Parkes Services Club has come to the tee with a sponsorship of $2,000 for the day. “Members of the Parkes Services Club have been very strong supporters of the Parkes Prostate Cancer Group,” said Michael Lynch of the Parkes Prostate Cancer Group (PPCG).

Funds raised on the day will be used to invite prostate cancer specialists to Parkes meetings and will increase the possibilities to have more Prostate Cancer Nurses in our area.

“Men with a history of family cancer must ensure that they are clear of the disease when they turn 40, and all men should visit their doctor when they turn 50,” said Michael.

Forbes Residents Shine With Melbourne Cup

September 23, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Legendary race caller Greg Miles with Forbes jockey Cat Newcombe and local race caller Col Hodge with the 2022 Melbourne Cup in Forbes on Monday. Work on the cup starts well in advance and the finished trophy is delivered one year and one week out of the race.

There was a special sparkle in the Forbes Town Hall on Monday when plenty of residents got to hold 18 carats of gold in their hands.

“There is no other single item in Australia made from so much gold,” said Joe McGrath, Melbourne Cup Tour Manager.

The 1.65kg of gold for this year’s cup came from Evolution’s Cowal Mine about 100km from Forbes, which made the photo opportunity with the cup even more special for Forbes locals.

The Melbourne Cup Tour included Forbes as one of its 33 destinations this year, and after the event at the town hall, Jemalong Village residents had the Cup come to them specially.

“The Melbourne Cup represents so much starting in 1861 at the heart of the gold rush era, and going for 162 consecutive years,” said Joe.

Before residents lined up for their moment golden glory, legendary race caller and Melbourne Cup Ambassador Greg Miles shared the stage with local horse racing ‘celebrities’ Cat Newcombe and Col Hodges. Cat, who was a professional jockey for seven years, said it was a real privilege to see the Melbourne Cup in Forbes.

Local race caller Col Hodge said Greg was the best caller and after more than 50 year he was still learning from him.

Greg said his love of racing started in primary school when he used to listen to the races on the radio with his father every Saturday afternoon. That was when he decided to become a race caller, and in 1981 he called the Melbourne Cup at the age of 22. “I was still there 36 years later. It never felt like I was going to work.”

Greg’s enthusiasm for racing rubbed off as the air filled with excitement and bright smiles when students from Forbes Primary School lined up alongside older residents for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Shane Wode, who is known for doing Forbes Show announcements, has a great interest in the Melbourne Cup and made sure not to miss the opportunity to hold the cup.

Pairs Winners To Regional Final

September 23, 2022 by Short Putt

Jake LeBroque and Jesse Hamilton enjoyed their golf last Saturday.

The better weather encouraged golfers onto the course, only to find many challenges resulting from the rising water which altered the way many holes were played.

Saturday’s Golf NSW KENO 2-person Ambrose, sponsored by Golf Harvest, had 30 pairs of players competing in the men’s, ladies and mixed categories. The winner in each category qualified for a regional final.

The men’s category had 23 pairs vying for the honour. Playing at the back of the field, the pair of Tom Toohey and Harry Callaghan scored well and putted even better to record 65.25 nett. Runners-up, and eligible to also go forward because of the number of participants, were Sandy Paterson and Reg Murray who scored 67.25 nett.

The ladies category had five pairs and the winners were Nicole Death and Veronica Rebellato with 67.5 nett. Helped by a good handicap, they were streets ahead of the remainder of the field.

The mixed category had two contending pairs with only a half point separating them. The pair of Warwick and Jean Judge took the honours.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – ladies: L Kennedy, men: B Carpenter; 18th – ladies: C Duncan, men: H Callaghan. The 3rd Hole Super Pin went to Jordan Brett.

The Ball Sweep went to 69 nett, being distributed to: J Brett/C Hanrahan, S Paterson/R Murray, S Grallelis/J House, D Rhodes/M Brindle, B Chandler/S Uphill, R Webb/P Tisdell, A and L Alley.

The Sunday Stableford Medley did not take place because of rising water.

This weekend we have a 4-ball Ambrose Medley sponsored by Alby Callaghan, and on Sunday the Annual VW Scramble.
