Diamond Celebration For Ladies’ Bowls

July 27, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Celebrating 70 years! The Central Western District Women’s Bowling Association recently gathered to mark the grand occasion at the Canowindra Bowling Club.

The Central Western District Women’s Bowling Association celebrated their 70th anniversary, with 18 ends of Triples Bowls and a special luncheon at the Canowindra Bowling Club on Tuesday, 18th July.

Both events of the day were attended by official guests including Sandra Jowett, Director of Bowls NSW, Roger Traves, President of the Canowindra Club, and A. Whyburn, President of the Canowindra Men’s Bowling Association. The history of the Central Western Women’s Bowling Association from 1953 until 2023 was presented to the visitors in addition to the cake cutting.

The Central Western District Women’s Bowling Association held its first official meeting on 9th October 1953, which was attended by Canowindra, Eugowra, Forbes, and Parkes clubs, with Cudal an apology for the first event. Gwynn Rice was appointed the first President at that meeting. The association started playing Pennants a month later.

In 1955, the assocaition elected a President, three Vice-Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer, along with three delegates to represent each of the Clubs. Cudal and Manildra merged in 1957, followed by the Forbes, Parkes and Parkes Railway Clubs in 1958. Woodstock joined the association in 1959. In 1970, Gooloogong joined, bringing the District’s total number of Clubs to 12.

One of the favourite competitions held for the association is the Taber Shield. An inter -district competition that is contested annually in early September in Stella Taber’shonor. Stella Taber served as District President from 1956 to 1963 and again from1964 to 1967.

The District currently has nine Clubs: Cowra, Canowindra, Forbes, Parkes, Manildra, Molong, Millthorpe, Orange City, and Orange Ex-Services.

The Central Western Districts Women’s Bowling association is a very important part of our community, and we wish them great success for a further 70 years.

The Future Looks Bright For Forbes/ Parkes Junior AFL

July 27, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Best on ground was awarded to Logan McMahon (Pictured) who was everywhere up front, Cayden Metzeling again proved his worth in front of goal; Max Ridge and Jackson Beaudin were outstanding in the ruck and midfield while defensive duo Zain Clark and Romulus Milsom were immovable.

Last weekend, Forbes was host to four games of junior AFL beginning with the debut of the Forbes/Parkes under 10’s v Dubbo. For many of the kids this was their first foray into competition footy but that was not a worry as the under 10’s put all their skills learned at Auskick into action and came away with the win over a tenacious Dubbo outfit.

The Orange/Forbes under 14’s continued their winning run with a gritty 3.4 (22) to 1.6 (12) win against Dubbo. This was the Swamp Tigers first win over Dubbo in 2023.

Dubbo took the early lead when James Wonderly kicked the first goal after some good lead up work from the midfield. Orange/Forbes countered Dubbo but were only able to kick two behinds to trail by four at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Swamp Tigers were able to assert some control, Cayden Metzeling kicked the first goal to take the lead. Dubbo pressured the Swamp Tigers goal, but resolute defence saw Dubbo only able to kick one behind. Logan McMahon kicked his first ever goal just before the halftime, Swamp Tigers took a 7-point lead at half time.

The third quarter was tight and both teams scored twice. Metzeling kicked his second goal of the day to increase the lead to 12 points at three quarter time. The fourth term was as equally as tight as the third, but it was Dubbo who created more opportunities; however accuracy proved the problem for both teams and both only managed to score behinds. Orange/Forbes held on for the win.

Boars Face Off Against Rhinos

July 20, 2023 by Roxane Manley

FIRST GRADE

With several players out due to work and the Front Line Services Ball, a last minute shuffle of players met the need to hold the space against the hard hitting Rhinos.

Soropepeli “Zorro” Bainivalu put across two tries, Semi Junior and Tom Woods scoring one each to round out the four needed for a bonus point. Luke Bevan kicked one conversion and two penalty goals.

Rhinos Dale Smith was the stand out scorer for Rhinos: one try, two conversions and three penalty goals for added to two further tries scored by the team.

With the final whistle the scores were locked at 28 all. It wasn’t the win the Boars wanted but it wasn’t a loss either and the extra points have them now safely positioned in second place on the New Holland Cup first grade ladder.

Next week is bye week for the Boars in all grades.

SECOND GRADE

The second grade Boars stormed home in a convincing 19-5 win over Dubbo Rhinos. Tries to Michael Watt, Dyllan Phillips and Tunioda Ralulu with two conversions to Brendan Bennett against a single try to Rhinos.

The front three, Kelevi Ralulu, Simon Oliver and Jonetami Koroivui held well against the much bigger Rhinos pack. Toby Baigent as always showed no fear as he bustled the team around the field. Zach Bayliss in his first year with the Boars showed his high stepping big striding run chews the meters when given the space. Jack Byrnes tackled with clinical efficacy taking out much bigger opponents in mid stride. Captain Michael watt was pleased with the team effort and look forward to the finals series.

We next face CSU Mitchell for the final round of the home and away series on Saturday 29th July at Spicer Oval.
