Forbes Touch Grand Finals Wrap Up

December 17, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

A Grade Mixed Winners Forbes Inn Allsorts

Last Thursday played host to the 2015 Forbes Touch Association Grand Finals in what could only be described as warm but perfect playing conditions. Having had to back up from the Monday night semi-finals, all players seemed excited at the prospect of being named premiers in their respective divisions.

Mixed divisions saw five grand finals contested and having refereed division three, all teams were out to gain the upper hand very early on. In what was some very entertaining touch footy the division three grand final ended up going into extra time in a drop off scenario. BD’s scored in their first set of six and unfortunately Anytime Fitness were unable to get over the line in their corresponding attacking set and lost the game 12-11. Other mixed winners on the night were Forbes Inn Allsorts, Touch Stars, Out of Touch and CS’s.

The B grade men’s and women’s finals were fast paced, exciting and played in the spirit of the game. Kitchen’s Plus went through the regular season unbeaten and were the clear favourites going into the nights main game. To their credit, the young members of Larrikins put a great fight and made the opposition work hard for every metre on the field. Kitchen’s Plus ended up going on to win 3-1. 13 Broke girls won the women’s B grade final.

Finally in the A grade divisions our winners were again two undefeated teams in both divisions being Team X in the women’s and Orcher’s Shearing in the men’s who will go down as the 2015 champions. The ladies in the women’s final played extremely well and the standard of play in both the A and B grade finals was exceptional. With a lot of junior girls coming through I think we are looking at some quality competition in the future. Claudia Lovett was named player of the final in the A grade women’s division.

The men’s A grade final was one of the fastest games of touch I have seen in my time in Forbes. The level of skill was excellent and despite the score line blowing out the boys from Walkers Ag N Vet can walk away knowing they gave it their all. Tyson Reweti was named player of the final. I want to thank each and every player that has come along each week this season and pulled on the boots to have a run around. Our numbers continue to rise and the competition is getting harder and harder each year. To all the parents and guardians that have supported their children this year I also thank you because without this next generation we won’t have a competition.

In closing, I would also like to thank the committee for their tireless work in all areas of the competition. With the inclusion of Hannah and Jared this year, our little committee continues to strive towards making each and every week an enjoyable yet competitive season for all participants. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all on the touch fields in 2016.

A Superstar in the Making

Local Rider Tom Drane from Forbes competed in the Victorian State Dirt Track Tiltles two weekends ago in Albury. Tom qualified for both the finals in his classes placing 1st in the 85cc 7-10 years and third in the 65cc 7-9 years. Tom, who is only nine has been racing since he was 4 years old and has been competing all year bringing home 4 National Titles and three State Titles. Tom’s parents and grandparents have travelled all over Australia over the past 12 months to enable him to compete.

Next year Tom moves up a class to 150cc, which will mean that he is competing against much older children. In January 2016 he has been invited to ride at the Troy Bayliss Classic invitational at Taree, and from then on will compete around Australia in his quest to win more Titles. This year Tom has also been racing go karts and last month he won the South Pacific titles in Orange in the Cadet 9 Class. It is clear to see that he has a strong passion for motorsports and will continue both disciplines next year.

Forbes Dragon Boat Club receives $10,000 Funding from the State Government

December 10, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes dragon Boat Club, which began in 2011 has been steadily been growing their membership, currently 38 members from both Forbes and Parkes. This will give them good access to the lake and protect the boat for the elements and vandalism.

The club were very excited about winning the grant and Andrew Gee congratulated the club and told members that this was the third largest grant given out. This money will be used to build a shed to house their two boats on the western end of the Sport & Rec Club bowling green. This will give the Club very good access to the lake and
protect the boat from the elements and also from vandalism. Mr.Gee said,”he was excited that this grant will help the Club achieve even greater deeds on the water.’

Exceptional Golf by Peter Dawson

December 10, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s play was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Central West Diesel. Once again Peter Dawson played exceptional golf to finish on 70 nett. His front-9 was 2-over, courtesy of a ‘7’ on the second, but his back-9 was 1-under, helped by a couple of birdies. Close behind was Barry Parker, with a fine 71 nett.

The B-grade (24) culminated in a nailbiting finish. An early player, Jeff House was 3-over after 15, but then it went wrong and he dropped 8 shots on the last holes finishing with 68 nett. At the end of the field, Adam Borger came home in par figures for his 68 nett. This ensured he won on count back from Jeff.

The C-grade was a triumph for consistency when Frank Hanns came in with a nett 69. Close behind was Stuart French with 70 nett. Sunday was the regular Stableford Medley. Many players were out early, among the ‘Sixes’ players to beat the heat. Dave Rhodes fired home with 39 points.

He had a comfortable lead over Stuart French (37), who is truly enjoying his golf, until of course the handicapper catches him. The Vets Golf, played on Thursday Dec 3rd, included the Single Stableford and Xmas Hamper comp played over 18 holes, and the Yearly results as compiled for both Parkes and Forbes players. Now for the Mick Miller Shield Results, tabulated over the year:

Points Comp: Winner – M Cartwright (F) 100; R/up – D Rogers (P) 90.
Stableford comp: Winner – T Edols (F) 576;
R/up J O’Shannessy (P) 564.

And there are a few stories. Local history was made when a group of five players each scored a birdie on the 1st hole. Luckily they did not par the first, or else their scores would have crumbled, as folk lore indicates.

Touch Football

December 3, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Well we are at the pointy end of the season now with the final round of games to be played on Monday night. In saying that, there are still a number of teams that can alter their position on the ladder, which could in turn result in a smoother run into the finals series in a fortnight.

The committee has still noticed that there are a few teams who have members that are not in the correct uniform. On Monday night this will result in a loss of points for the round. This also goes for players that are playing for a team that they are not registered for. Despite this being a good gesture, you are actually giving that team an unfair advantage against a team that is following the rules. Please don’t put your position on the ladder at risk by not following the rules that have been put into place for the betterment of the game.

The warmer weather has definitely settled in so the committee is encouraging all players and spectators to make sure they are consuming plenty of fluid during and after games. There are several taps around the fields so please re-fill between games if you are playing multiple games on the night. Just a reminder that the semi-finals will take place on Monday 7th December 2015, with the Grand Finals being held on Thursday 10th December. Have a great weekend,
see you Monday. Any questions can be directed to the Forbes Touch Facebook page.

30th November 2015.

A Muddy Weekend

November 26, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Tracy, Carmen and Cathy after

On Saturday 22nd November many of our local ladies made their way to Canberra to challenge themselves and raise valuable funds for the Jane McGrath Foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness and Treatment Charity, in the 2015 Miss Muddy.

Miss Muddy is a female only obstacle and mud festival with a course of up to 5km for participants aged 13 years and over. It includes mud, colour, climbing crawling, slipping and sliding. This is an untimed event which is all about women supporting women in a fun and non-threatening environment. There are no expectations or judgements just lots of fun.

Three of our local ladies, Carmen Walsh, Tracey Reid and Kathy Ward, were amongst the many women who took the
challenge last weekend. This was the first event of this type for the three ladies who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are claiming it to be a warm up for their next challenge the Dubbo mud run in April next year.

Eventually the trio would like to complete the Tough Mudder NSW event which was also held over the weekend at Glenworth Valley on the Central Coast. Forbes and Parkes were well represented at this challenge with at least two teams from Parkes and a combined Forbes, Bathurst and Gunnedah team of 9 all completing the course. Tough Mudder is an 10-20km obstacle course which promotes teamwork and comradery while raising funds for the Soldier On Foundation.

Soldier On is about Australians coming together to show their support for our physically and psychologically wounded and raise money to help improve the lives of thousands of soldiers who have recently returned from the conflicts after 1990.

Touch Football

November 26, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Only two competition rounds are left before the hotly contested finals series will begin for the 2015 Forbes Touch season. It was evident that teams were out to improve their current position in their respective divisions, to ensure the best run through to the main games in a couple of weeks’ time.

A big shout out to Andy Hardy this week for helping us with referees duties. Andy took it upon himself last week to shadow referee with a couple of Year 8 boys to help them with decision making and generally being more confident with the whistle in hand. As you are all aware, the juniors are the future of this game and to remain successful, refereeing duties are part of our competition. Any questions can be directed to the Forbes Touch Facebook page.

Medal of Medallists goes to Denis Culley

November 26, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday the golfers competed in a Stroke event over two Divisions. This was also the competition round to determine the ‘Medal of Medallists’, whereby each of the winners of Monthly Medals through the year was eligible to be crowned “the Best of the Best”.

In the “Medal of Medallists’, 27 of the 32 eligible medallists participated. Denis Culley relished the warmer temperatures, last winning medal in May, and played well under his handicap to record a nett 66. The best eligible A-Grader was Peter Dawson on nett 73, alongside Steve Betland. In the A Division, Phil Maher was the winner when he played within his handicap to score a nett 71. Runner-Up was David Rhodes, with72.

The B Division went to Denis Culley, with 66 nett, from a determined Andrew McDonald with 69. Denis played well under his handicap. Andrew was fortunate to scrape in on countback from Gary Collitts and Stuart French. Nearest the pins were: 9th – Brian Monaghan; 18th – Brian Everest. They were the only two ‘Brians’ in the field, not counting
Fred Collie. The ball sweep went to 73 nett, being awarded to those above plus: 69 – G Collitts, S French, 70 – R Morris, A Callaghan, 71 – R Baker, 72 – J Clarke, B Everest, 73 – P Dawson, S Betland, A Grierson, N McMillan, S Kirkman, P Duke. Sunday’s Stableford Medley was a quiet day, with many persons wishing to rest and recover from the weather influences.

Richard Smith took the winners circle with 45 points. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ron Morris; 18th – Brian Monaghan.
The Vets played an 18-hole event at Condobolin on 19 November, the last 18-hole event for the year. The Winners list for the day‘s competition includes:
A-Grade: 1st – J Haley (Fbs) 44 Points; 2nd – D Rogers (Pks) 41; 3rd – B Toms (Cdo) 41 B-Grade: 1st – G Griffiths (Cdo) 43; 2nd – A Luff (Cwa) 40; 3rd F Donahue (Fbs) 40. B-Grade: 1st – T Broadley(Cdo) 45; 2nd – L Archer (Pks) 42; 3rd – B Menzies (Cdo) 42. NTP’s went to: A-grade – D Rodgers; BGrade – F Donohue; C-Grade – R Glover.

The Coles/Miller Shield, which accrues points across the year’s 18-holes Comps went to: Parkes (2170 points) from Forbes (2146), Grenfell (1578), W/Wyalong (1467), Cowra (1342) and Condobolin (1038). Maybe 2016 will see a different result.

This was also the Inaugural Lachlan Valley Districts Vets Golf Medal, sponsored by NSW Veteran Golfers Association. This is played for only between eligible players, those being the grade winners from the first six 18-hole events of the year.

The winner was Len Archer (Pks) with 42 points. He pipped Ralph Baker (Fbs) on count back from his 42 points. The next game is a 12-hole event at Parkes. We return to a gathering time of 12:30 pm for a 1:00 pm start. It could be hot again so take plenty of drink.

Golf Pro Tip Myth busted! We have all heard it before ‘KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN’. I’m sorry to tell you but it is one of the most unproductive things you can tell a golfer. Let’s think about it for a second, when we tell someone to keep their head down what do they usually do? Tuck their chin on their chest! This causes many problems including a restricted shoulder turn and a rigid golf swing. Try it yourself and you will soon see!

Yes, we must keep our head still but, when you miss or ‘top’ the ball that’s not because you lifted your head it is because your chest has come up to where it was causing the club to not stay on path and hit the ball. This is usually caused by the golfer trying to ‘scoop’ the ball in the air.

So next time rather than telling someone to keep your head down, tell them keep their head still and focus on hitting down on the back of the golf ball. This is a much more effective and productive way for someone to improve.

Happy Golfing! Daniel

Local Sport Grants

November 26, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Local sporting clubs are encouraged to apply for the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program to get more locals involved in sport and recreation activities. Member for Orange Andrew Gee said the program aims to increase regular and on-going participation in sport and active recreation.

“The Local Sport Grant Program provides funding for sports clubs in the Central West and across NSW,” Mr Gee said. There are four project types within the program. They are Sport Club Development, Community Sport Events, Sport Access, and Facility Development and Capital Equipment.

Applications are now open until 11 February 2016. To find out more information or to apply, visit www.sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au

NSW Rugby 7’s

It has long been a dream for local girl Darcie Morrison to make a National team and this week she is one step closer to her goal being selected in the NSW Rugby 7’s squad. Darcie began her journey last year when she trialled for the Australian Institute of Sport sports draft and was identified for Rugby 7’s and Combat Sports. After attending
training camps for both sports Darcie chose Rugby 7’s and began training with the NSW Development squad. Training included a two hour training session once a week in Sydney and a strict strength and conditioning program to be completed twice a day on her own. Her dedication and commitment to the sport saw her invited to play
with the Australian Team against Japan.

Darcie competed at the Australian University Games with the Bathurst CSU team who were the eventual winners of the competition. She was awarded players player for the series and was also named in the Merit Selection Squad along with two of her team mates. Last weekend Darcie competed with the Sydney University team at Campbelltown
and was named in the NSW Rugby 7 team which will now compete at the National Competition to be held in Wagga on the 5th & 6th of December. This carnival will be a platform for selectors to view promising athletes for the Australian Squad.
