Have Your Say On Draft Lachlan Unregulated Water Sharing Plan

November 14, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The draft Lachlan Unregulated River water sharing plan is now on public display at https://water.nsw.gov.au/lachlanwater-sharing-plan

The draft Lachlan Unregulated River water sharing plan is now on public display, and the NSW Government is inviting the community to have its say.

The draft plan sets out clear rules for fair and sustainable water sharing among water users and the environment across the region for the next decade.

It includes setting limits on how much water can be taken, protecting resources for the environment, basic landholder rights and cultural needs along with providing secure, legal and tradeable water access rights. It also sets out how much, where and when water can be taken by licence holders.

NSW DCCEEW Executive Director of Water Planning Giselle Howard said: “Water sharing plans are vital tools for managing our state’s water resources, and the Lachlan Unregulated River water sharing plan is no exception.

“We want to hear your feedback on the draft plan now so we can continue to manage the region’s water fairly and sustainably over the next 10 years.”

We’re inviting the Lachlan community to read the draft plan and make a submission before the public exhibition period ends on 20th December. We’ll be holding a webinar on 28th November from 2pm to 3pm, where the community can learn more, ask questions and provide feedback.

Face-to-face drop-in sessions will be held in Crookwell on 3rd December between 10am and 12pm and in Cowra on 4th December between 10am and 12pm.

Online one-on-one sessions with a water planner are also available in the week commencing 18th November.

The draft includes proposed changes to simplify the plan, make it clearer and easier for water users to understand and comply with the requirements.

In some areas, we have proposed changes to water access and trading rules. Other changes include additional protections for specific wetlands in the region.

We want to hear the community’s views on these changes and will carefully consider all feedback before finalising the draft plan ahead of it going into effect on 1 July 2025.

To register for a session and to make a submission, visit: https://water.nsw.gov.au/lachlan-water-sharing-plan

You’re one point away from postnatal depression

November 7, 2024 by Roxane Manley

“You’re one point away from postnatal depression” said the family health care nurse scoring the questionnaire I had just completed in her office.

I was on the verge of breaking point. My baby, our third addition, was breastfeeding every 40 minutes overnight and would not take a bottle.

The nurse explained that I was in a zone called postnatal depletion. My hair was falling out, my nails were cracked, my mind was playing tricks on me. I was depleted.

Being pregnant, breastfeeding, caring for other humans, not getting enough sleep had taken its toll.

Fast forward a few weeks as I now sit in front of Laura, my Nutritionist, as she reviews the results of my blood test. The numbers on the page in front of us tell the story of how I feel.

I was a tired Mum, so exhausted that I was surviving on frozen pizza and dino chicken nuggets. I’m sure many of you can relate! With the help of Laura I began to reincorporate foods into my diet that were rich in the vitamins and minerals my body was lacking and pretty quickly, my nails healed up and grew. My hair stopped clogging the shower drain, and I didn’t feel exhausted every time I woke up in the morning.

We’re thrilled to share that Laura is now offering her Nutrition Consultation services to our community in Parkes or via Telehealth to any location. If you are seeking support to feel your best, reach out to our team to book an appointment with Laura today on 0437 749 746 or learn more at www.kerinhealth.com.au

Women’s Health Services Transformation

October 31, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Australian women in every state and territory can now access treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections at a community pharmacy, without a prescriptionIt follows a decision to empower community pharmacists to do more for their female patients. UTIs are the second most frequent preventable cause of hospitalisation and on average 1 in 2 women develop a UTI in their lifetime.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President Trent Twomey said “Women are busy mothers, carers, bosses who need timely easy-to-access access relief to get on with their day and prevent long-term health complications.”

Professor Twomey said increased access to UTI treatment was part of a larger evolution of women’s health services in community pharmacies across Australia.

There are more than 6000 community pharmacies across Australia that have the opportunity to provide additional services and prescriptions for everyday health conditions.

“The widening of the services provided in community pharmacy is meeting the expectation of the modern patient and is relieving the pressure on other parts of the health system.

“Community pharmacists are highly skilled health professionals and we’re ready, willing and able to deliver more for our patients,” Professor Twomey said.

October 31, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Year 8 School Photo 1982.

Did you or someone you know attend Forbes High School back in 1984? This year marks 40 years since the Forbes High School ‘class of 1984’ completed Year 10.

To help celebrate this milestone, some ex-students have gotten together to organise a reunion so that everyone can reunite and have a chance to renew old, and dear friendships. The reunion is open to anyone who was in this school year – whether or not you completed Year 10 in 1984 or Year 12 in 1986 – or even if you were there for just part of it.

The hope is that as many people as possible will attend and partners are more than welcome to come along, in fact it is encouraged. The weekend will kick off with casual drinks at the Globe Hotel in Dowling St from 6pm on Friday 15th November. The official reunion will be held on Saturday, November 16th from 6pm on the veranda of the Forbes Sport and Recreation (Bowling) Club. The cost to attend is $15 per person, which covers a delicious grazing table which is being catered by Bec Tarrant and is payable on the night.

If anyone has their school uniform or any other memorabilia from back in the day then we would love for it to be brought along. To round off the weekend there will be a tour of Forbes High, our old stomping ground, on Sunday 17th November.

Help spread the word and if you plan on coming along please RSVP as soon as you can to Mark “Squizzy” Taylor on 0419 247 972.

Bushtracker Rally Donations Benefit Local Community

October 24, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Bushtrackers at the presentation of donations prior to morning tea.

Each year the Bushtracker Caravan Owners Association hold a rally in a town that has experienced recent hardship – and this year Forbes was their destination.

Members converged in Forbes from every state and territory across Australia. Their aim was to get to know the area, spend money in the district and support local charities during their ten-day stay.

Robyn Miller, President of Forbes Evening Branch CWA sourced ‘Welcome to Forbes’ packs which were distributed to rally members.

The Bushtrackers held a spit roast competition, using the coals to then hold a camp oven competition the next day. The CWA were invited to judge the Bushtrackers camp oven cooking competition. Three members, Anne Reade (Forbes CWA), Gail McKay (Bogan gate CWA) and Vicki Williams (Evening CWA) put their judging skills to use, examining the cooking with the usual CWA judging criteria.

The Forbes Evening Branch CWA was then invited to cater for their farewell morning tea with over 120 rally members attending. CWA members prepared a delicious mixed spread, receiving many compliments for their efforts. To support the local community further, the Bushtrackers paid for all the ingredients.

Rally organisers shopped in Forbes for prizes for their auction at their gala dinner, catered for by Eat Your Greens.

Robyn Miller said, “It has been estimated that the Bushtrackers spent in excess of $26,000 in our local community during their ten-day stay.”

Through the proceeds of the auction and other activities, the Bushtrackers organising committee were able to make considerable donations to local charities. Some of the beneficiaries were: Toy Library $1,500, Sunshine Club $1,500, Forbes History Museum $1,000, Forbes Town Library $1,500, Forbes CWA $1,500 for air-conditioning in CWA Hall, Forbes Evening CWA Branch $1,500 for Youth Education.

Making It Easier For Patients In Regional NSW Needing To Travel For Healthcare

October 24, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Stephen Lawrence MLC has today announced that the NSW Government is improving access to healthcare for people living in rural and regional communities, providing financial assistance to over 81,000 patients from Local Health Districts covering inland NSW in the past year through the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS).

IPTAAS provides financial assistance to patients who need to travel long distances for specialist healthcare that is not available locally. NSW patients have also received more money back in their pockets thanks to increased subsidies, with the average reimbursement per patient to be $482.

The NSW Government is embracing a comprehensive range of measures to improve access to care in our regional, rural and remote communities, including: delivering more health worker accommodation in the bush, doubling rural health worker incentives for the most critical and hard to fill positions to improve recruitment and retention, boosting doctors in our regional GP surgeries as well as hospitals through the single employer model, and deploying an extra 500 regional paramedics.
