Much Loved Administrator Says Goodbye

August 13, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Marie Thomas, a much loved and appreciated employee celebrated her retirement recently after 39 years working with TAFE, bringing a fulfilling and interesting career to a gentle finish. Celebrating with a big farewell function at
the Forbes Services Memorial Club on 24 July, Marie looks back on her administration career fondly.

Marie’s first taste of TAFE life came as a 16 year old student when she sat for her Secretarial Certificate before starting her administrative career. Starting at the Parkes TAFE as a typist in June 1976 when she was only 21 years old, Marie was a loyal TAFE employee on the Parkes campus for many years until 1998. “When I first started at the college as a typist I was by myself,” Marie said, “but the college grew quite big.”

When Marie was elevated to a role as Cluster Leader in Customer Service, she became involved with TAFE campuses in Parkes, Forbes, Cowra, Grenfell and Condobolin. For two years during 2007-2008 Marie worked out of Dubbo as the Head of Administration looking after Cobar, Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Coonamble
until coming back to her job at Forbes in 2009. “I chose to go down a few grades so I could come back to Forbes for the lifestyle,” Marie said. “Money is not everything.” “Our focus was on our students, ensuring they had the support they needed to succeed in their chosen career paths.”

“I loved seeing school students come to TAFE and watching them mature, and I loved the people I worked with in TAFE and the family type atmosphere.” “I was very passionate about trainees that came through and very supportive of my staff because you have to value the people that work for you.” “I will miss people a lot. I’ll miss the staff and
interacting with the students. But I’ve earnt my retirement; this is now my time which I’ll share with my family.”

Jamming for Genes

August 13, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Katie Gunn and Mel Cowhan

Every year, people across Australia unite on Jeans for Genes Day to raise money for genetic research for the Children’s Medical Research Institute by wearing their favourite jeans and craziest denim outfits.

To coincide with Jeans for Genes day which was held on Friday 7 August, The Forbes High School Student Representative Council (SRC) added a twist to the event. The School’s staff and students donned their favourite denim numbers for the day and enthusiastically donated a gold coin in support of the cause to aid research and
cures of childhood diseases.

As an extra incentive to raise money for the cause, students were entertained at lunchtime with a concert performed by some exceptionally talented local music students including Jake Ellison, Quinten Hapgood, Jacob Beard, Maddison Collits, Paige Ellison and Chelsea Turner.

Next, the attention turned to the crowd with a lip sync competition where ten brave individuals took to the stage. Their energetic and entertaining performances were well received by students and staff.

At the end of the performances, everyone had the opportunity to vote with their loose change, donating coins to their favourite performer. The act which attracted the most votes won the overall competition. Afterwards, the SRC put on a lunchtime special of chips and gravy which was very popular among students and sold out quickly. A variety of cakes and slices were also on sale.

Forbes High School said the event was a roaring success and a wonderful way to raise funds for a worthwhile charity.

Pre and Post Emergent Weed Control

It is so great to see that pre-emergent sprays have worked particularly well in many situations this year. Those who had a robust pre-emergent plan are now reaping the rewards having had very little weed competition to date. This not only maintains yield potential for the crop, but also reduces pressure on post emergent sprays with lower
weed populations to control.

With the current wet conditions and the frosty conditions beforehand, it has been a challenging period to get in the paddock for post emergent spraying. It sometimes feels like a no win situation – you can’t spray because there are frosty conditions prevailing, then wet weather hampers traffic on paddocks once the frosts clear out. In situations where a post emergent spray is required, a reduction in efficacy may occur due to the size of the weeds and crop canopy closure following the weather related delays. In addition, if a decision is made to spray during frosty conditions, efficacy again, may be compromised.

Where weeds get through a spray or a decision is made not to spray, a strategy to capture their seed set should be considered and put in place before harvest. Crops should be monitored over the coming weeks to determine the level of escaped weeds. In these situations, particularly where ryegrass is present, preventing seed from returning to the seed bank is paramount.

An effective and common way of doing this is through narrow windrow burning. This practice is gaining momentum in the district with excellent results observed where done properly. Should you be concerned about herbicide susceptibility of these weed populations and would like to have them tested, make a note to collect weed seed from these paddocks/areas just prior to harvest. Seed can then be sent away for testing over the summer period.
There are many options out there for a range of crops and weeds as well as desired outcomes.

If you have any questions on the subject, or you would like to discuss your options for any given situation such as these, consult with one of the Agronomists at AgriWest today. Contact 6851 4200 for more information or to start your consultation.

Around the Markets

The cattle market has been rising slowly, week to week over the Central West. Paul Breen of KMWL Forbes said that cattle for domestic kill for supermarkets made up to $3.50 per kg at Forbes on Monday 10, with the bull market exceeding $3 per kg, which is a record high.

“The new season lamb market has ranged from $95 to $165 – this is for light weight suckers, up to 50kg,” Paul said. “The mutton market remains strong at between $3.50 and $3.80 per kg. Old lambs also brought good prices, ranging from $5.20 to $6.00 kg.” “This past week saw heavy yardings in both Dubbo with over 50,000 and Forbes in
excess of 40,000 and these numbers look set to continue well into the spring. Mostly these are new season lambs with the balance of old lambs. There is a lack of numbers in the south, including South Australia, and Victoria
and this lack of yardings has helped to contribute to the good prices at a local level and will keep this market high in the coming weeks.”

KMWL conducted the Moongenilla Angus Bull Sale on Friday 7 August with a total clearance of all bulls, averaging over $6,000 per bull, which is an overall reflection of the cattle market as well. Upcoming sales include the Poll Dorset Ram Sale at Ridgehaven, Cudal (on property) on Thursday September 10th as well as the Devanah
& Waroona Murray Grey Sale on property on Friday 18th September. More details can be obtained by calling the
KMWL office in Forbes on 02 6852 3355.

Winyar Merino Sale

Just out of Canowindra on the Mandurama Road, the Winyar Merino and Poll Merino Stud sale will be held on property on Wednesday September 9th. Inspections are welcome from 10 am and the auction will commence at 1 pm. The Winyar rams are known for their high performance figures, for genetic gain and to enhance the breed on values. They also produce soft handling wools with great bloom, heavy cutting 19.0 micron average. For more information call Allan Dawson on 02 6344 1653.

Beating a Path to China

Delaying China Australia Free Trade Agreement (CHAFTA) could kneecap Australian farmers. It has taken over 10 years for the free trade deal to be finalised with China. “This is a deal to eliminate taxes on Australian exports to China,” Angus Taylor, Federal Member for Hume said. “It is time for Australian farmers to reap the benefits, and it is time for the Free Trade Agreement to enter into force and for the tariffs to be removed.”

“If by some chance CHAFTA stalled, there’d be plenty of countries around the world ready to supply beef, sheep meat, butter, cheese and wine to China. Everybody is beating a path to China’s door.”

Ready for spring

With Spring just around the corner, now is the time to ensure that all of your machinery is serviced and ready to go for spring spraying, hay making and of course, harvest. McClintocks at Forbes has a range of Case tractors and harvesters ready for you to have a look at. In addition, their sales of the Krone baler continue to grow. Call in
and see them on the Newell Highway, just out of Forbes. If you are looking for a new cab ute then why not consider one of the great outback deals from Orange Motor Group, your dealer for Isuzu in the Forbes area. Starting at $25,990 driveaway, this is a special offer until stock runs out.

Touring to Save Souls

Feelings of depression and suicide affect millions of Australians every day and when Sandra Moran’s 22-year-old son Jai tragically took his own life, she knew she had to share the burden of her loss.

To honour Jai’s memory, Sandra is helping others overcome depression and suicidal tendencies by talking about the risks of emotional and mental health issues that are often stigmatised or swept under the rug in smaller communities. Travelling with her is Jerry Farsoun, an individual who has struggled with feelings of suicide
and depression himself and who strives to prove that there is a higher value to each and every person, showing people what they can achieve through determination.

The team travel together with Sandra on a motorbike and Jerry riding with his family in a fully equipped, state-of-the-art bus, visiting remote and rural communities to reach out to individuals who might need them. “Basically the main people that can help suicide survivors are other suicide survivors,” Sandra said when the bus/motorbike convoy rolled into Forbes on Monday. “There’s always someone to reach out to.” “I am enjoying it,” Jerry said about the tour, “and it’s great when people come out but many people are reluctant to talk when they are a part of a tight-knit community.”

“We are really putting ourselves out there. What we are doing is revolutionary; we’re beating a different drum.”
Jerry is also pioneering an incredible new mobile application which gives people the option to set up a “guardian” network. If the person fears for their personal safety, they can hit the “panic” button, which notifies the nominated network of people that the person is in trouble, what their location is and how much battery life they have left.

“It’s a phenomenal concept and it will revolutionise personal safety,” said Jerry. “It’s amazing in the sense that it could save lives.” Check OverDownUnder out on Facebook to find out how to donate to a cause in need!

The Rotary Globe was put together back in the 1950s by a past Rotarian, the late Eric Leaney. Eric joined the Rotary Club of Forbes back in 1949 only a year after the Club was first formed. He held every Board position apart from Club President, was Club Secretary for ten consecutive years and was a great gentleman through and through. The Globe is used to collect the smallest coins and started off eating pennies and now devours 5 cent pieces.

Did you know research from the University of NSW and Miami University into how men treated women while playing video games showed males were hostile to women who beat them at playing!

Every year more than 35,000 people are reported missing in Australia with around 12,500 in NSW. This equates to one person disappearing every 15 minutes and research indicates for every person who goes missing, on average at least 12 people are affected in some way. “If you have fears for the welfare of a loved one I urge you to come forward so the Police Force can assist as soon as possible,” Police Minister Tony Grant said, stressing there is no minimum time frame to wait before making a missing persons report.

Building the Green Dream

August 6, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Jason Hopkins GHA

A fully-sustainable and self-sufficient home is turning into the new Australian Dream. A house that is energy efficient, cost effective and friendly to the planet might be the trifecta, and Forbes’ own Jason Hopkins is turning
dreams into realities all over town. “For too long, only the very few could build a green home, and that is most likely to do with the high rates being charged by niche green builders in the Australian market,” Jason said.

“Now we are able to deliver homes that are as practical and affordable as they are efficient and healthy, opening up a world of lower bills to every Australian, regardless of their budget.”

In 2014, Jason became one of the first franchisees of Green Homes Australia, a national award winning building franchise. He has a passion to be a builder who provides an exceptional experience for those clients that choose to work with him in constructing their ultimate energy efficient home.

Green Homes Australia are the only building company in Australia that can deliver homes that are certified to comply with ISO 50001, the international standard covering systems and processes which improve energy performance. “Forbes has become one of the very first towns to have an internationally recognised, certified energy efficient home built for a local couple on their Bogoin Lain property,” Jason said. “Another Forbes couple are building on South Lead Road.”

“We should be very proud of this achievement as we will see in the near future the entire industry focusing on how to make homes and businesses more energy efficient.”

High School White Ribbon Night

August 6, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Oliver Carlise & Mr West cooking dinner

Violence against women is a serious problem in Australia and to coincide with White Ribbon Night, the Forbes High School Welfare Team held a White Ribbon Evening on Thursday 30 July. More than 35 male students, along with several male teachers attended the evening which began after school and finished at around 8pm.

Attendees participated in games and activities and were enlightened by discussions and presentations before enjoying a delicious dinner. The organisers were happy with the response to the event and are confident that it will continue to grow in the future, believing it to be a great step towards eradicating violence against women.

White Ribbon Night is a chance to join communities across Australia uniting to bring an end to violence against women, having a night out to get the word out. In Australia, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by someone known to them. One in four children are exposed to domestic violence.

We would all like to think that family, friends, colleagues and neighbours are safe at home. This is a basic right. Sadly, for many, this is not the case. On average, one woman is killed every week as a result of intimate partner violence and a woman killed by her male partner is most likely to be in her own home. This is the extreme end of men’s violence against women. If we can change young boys’ attitudes today, we can change the world and make violence against women a thing of the past.

Adventures in Africa

August 6, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Chris Finkel

Earlier this year, Chris Finkel and a group of Rotary friends climbed Mount Kenya, quite a surprising accomplishment for a man in his 70s. “Three years ago John Glassford, who is a member of Rotary Club of Cootamundra, decided to organise a team to climb Mount Kenya,” said Chris, a member of the Rotary Club of Forbes.

John’s aim was to go back and help some of the less fortunate people living in Africa by getting together a group of 12 people who would raise $5000 each by climbing Mount Kenya, the second highest peak in Africa. The goal of $60,000 would help educate the Maasai People, a hunter-gatherer tribe in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Some of the funds raised will go towards building a school and training teachers to give children a better education.

The money will also be used to build an AIDS clinic, with some going towards the Australian charity Legacy. “So far we’ve raised around $40,000 and donations will be open until the end of 2015,” Chris said. The following is an excerpt from Chris’ journal where he wrote about his experiences and his Tanzanian guide, tackling the peak on
ANZAC Day. “After the first few minutes of climbing, I began to experience serious breathlessness. Moses dropped back from the main group to stay with me and slowly we made progress towards the last flat ridge below Point Lenana.”

“Moses and I reached the 4700 metre ridge to cheers and snow ball attacks from the rest of the team. I had climbed 4700 metres with a 10kg pack of gear and water on my back.” Chris was at the gym for 2-3 months before the challenge and would walk 8kms a day with a backpack and 6 litres of water to prepare. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” says Chris, “but we did it. It was a great challenge.”

Some members of the group also visited the Oloimugi Maasai Village, the site of a new school to be built using the funds raised by the Mt Kenya climb; quite a fascinating story in itself. “A village gate had been erected in our honour
and we were greeted by Maasai songs from the village ladies. We were guided through the gateway under an array of walking sticks held up by the very tall Maasai elders. I was singled out by a white bearded older Maasai tribesman and presented with his walking stick.”

The Rotary Club of Forbes will be hosting a Sponsor’s Night at the Vanderberg Hotel in September to celebrate the achievements of climbers and sponsors with food and a presentation of the adventure.
