September 4, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Grain growers are invited to share their thoughts at the upcoming Grains R&D: Your levies, your views consultation, organised by GrainGrowers. Image: Farmpix Photography.(www.farmpix.com.au/)

Grain growers in the Parkes region are being urged to attend an upcoming grower meeting to discuss issues around grains research and development, levy rates and reviews and the impact on growers.

The Grains R&D: Your levies, your views consultation, organised by GrainGrowers as part of its representative organisation (RO) role with the GRDC, will take place in Parkes on Thursday 11 September at the Parkes Services Club, 10:30am – 12pm.

In total, meetings will be held in 18 regional centres across five states from 2 September through until 16 October. The Parkes meeting is one of four being held across NSW.

GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said the meetings are an ideal opportunity for growers to consider the current situation, to put forward their thoughts on the issues and raise questions that they would like considered and answered.

Ms Gawel said in recent months there had been many discussions about grains research and development, and it was important to engage as widely as possible with growers.

“As a grower member organisation, direct engagement is in our DNA, and these meetings are designed to allow us to listen and to reflect carefully on the next steps.”

“While our members are free to contact us at any time, growers across Australia now have multiple opportunities to come together to discuss.

“The full schedule of consultations is available via our website. For anyone unable to attend, we will be holding a virtual session at a later date to encourage the widest possible consultation,” Ms Gawel said.

August 28, 2025 by Roxane Manley

The lives of Jason and Michelle Woodhouse, and their family were drastically changed when their son Corey Woodhouse (14) of Forbes unexpectedly took his own life in August 2023. It forever altered their lives and Corey’s father Jason Woodhouse said, “Our journey of pain will never end and nothing will change what has happened, but we wish to raise awareness of the services available for the families and youth of Forbes and surrounds.”

Since their loss, Jason and Michelle have been doing what they can to raise money and awareness for mental health. During the month of August they have been selling red paper planes at Bernardis Forbes and at Coles in Parkes, Dubbo, Lithgow, Orange, Bathurst, Katoomba, Wellington, Cowra, Mudgee and Narromine. They have already raised over $10,000 and the planes are still on sale until 31 August. Tag them @FlyHighforMentalHealth when you see the planes.

Multiple Upgrades Complete On The Bogan Way

August 28, 2025 by Roxane Manley

A series of major upgrades to The Bogan Way are complete, transforming more than 25 kilometres of this vital regional freight route and improving safety and access across the Parkes Shire.

Seven projects made up the $15.7 million Parkes Shire North South Link (MR350) Project. This included three projects funded by more than $4.5 million from the Australian Government under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, and over $9 million from the New South Wales Government.

The Bogan Way is a regional road link that provides a vital north-south road train route through the Narromine, Parkes and Forbes shires in central west NSW. It supports transport operators connecting producers to grain silos and the Central West Livestock Exchange, and is a vital haulage and residential access route.

The completed works enable higher productivity vehicles, including AB Triples, to safely use the route, thanks to addressing pavement rehabilitation, widening, realignment, culvert replacement, and the installation of wire rope barriers.

Parkes Mayor Neil Westcott said, “The council is fortunate to have the staff and expertise to deliver projects of this scale in-house, supporting our community while dramatically improving safety.”

Legacy Looking For Local Support

August 28, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Forbes legatees Martin Cunningham And Frank Hanns, who participated in the legacy Centenary Torch Relay are encouraging local communities to show their support for Legacy during Legacy Week: 31 August to 6 September.

How many people know about Legacy and what it does? ‘Legacy Australia’ has provided support to the families of Australian Defence Force personnel who have lost their life, or health through service in conflicts overseas since 1923.

Legacy Australia was founded by an exserviceman, fulfilling a promise made to a dying mate in the trenches of World War 1.

This promise to look after his mate’s wife when he returned from war took on a greater meaning as the need for support for bereaved families of veterans was so great.

Today, Legacy has grown to include approximately 4,000 volunteers helping to support more than 40,000 widows and 1,800 children of veterans who have lost their lives or health due to active service overseas.

What does this mean locally? Forbes Legacy was formed in 1947 to support the widows and families in communities across the Bland, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Parkes and Weddin Shire Council areas. Today, this area goes under the banner of Lachlan Legacy.

Lachlan Legacy President Jenny Friend stated, “Within Lachlan Legacy area there are seventy-two beneficiaries receiving support”.Forbes Legatee and Lachlan Legacy Vice President, Martin Cunningham said, “In Forbes there are eighteen beneficiaries being supported by Forbes Legacy volunteers, with another twelve in Parkes and four in Peak Hill that Forbes volunteers also look after.”

Legacy Week is the main fundraising time for this uniquely Australian non-profit organisation. This year Legacy Week runs from 31August to 6 September and volunteers will be selling promotional items (badges, pens, bears) across the country.

In Forbes volunteers will be selling items at Bunnings and Club Forbes. Parkes Services Club, Peak Hill Ex-Services and Citizen’s Club, Trundle Services and Citizens Club and Condobolin RSL and Cowra RSL will also have Legacy merchandise available.

Aged Care You Can Count On – Right Here In Our Community

August 28, 2025 by Roxane Manley

At the heart of every Meals on Wheels service is a simple but powerful mission: to support the wellbeing, independence, and connection of older people in our community. In Parkes and Forbes, this mission has been carried out with dedication and care for decades — and today, we’re proud to share a new chapter in that story.

Meals on Wheels Parkes and Meals on Wheels Forbes are coming together to strengthen the future of local meal delivery and community support. This collaboration between two like-minded services, working together to ensure that our communities continue to receive the care they deserve, now and into the future.

While some changes will take place behind the scenes, our clients and volunteers can rest assured:

• The services you know and trust are staying the same.

• Clients will continue to receive the same friendly service, with the same caring volunteers.

• There will be no changes to volunteer roles or support.

• Both Parkes and Forbes offices will remain open and active.

• A combined staff and administration team will now work across both locations.

• Most excitingly, we’ll be able to offer some additional services to meet the growing needs of our communities.

This new structure allows us to pool our resources, share our strengths, and work more efficiently, all while keeping our focus firmly on the people we serve. By coming together, we’re future-proofing Meals on Wheels for both towns, ensuring that our support for older residents remain strong, responsive, and local.

We are deeply grateful to our volunteers, staff, and supporters who make this work possible every day. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected future for Meals on Wheels in Parkes and Forbes.

Wednesday 27 August was National Meals on Wheels Day, a day to celebrate the local volunteers, customers and community members who make it all possible. Under this year’s theme, “Aged Care You Can Count On”, Meals on Wheels is proudly reaffirming its promise to be a trusted, reliable presence in the lives of older Australians.

“For more than 70 years, Meals on Wheels has delivered more than just meals. We bring nourishment, safety and a friendly face to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and we do it with heart.”
