Your Last Chance To Submit To Energy From Waste Inquiry

October 30, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Select Committee members with Chair Nicole Overall (centre) NSW National in the Upper House.

A motion for a Parliamentary Inquiry into energy from waste proposals in NSW was successful after mounting opposition in Regional NSW. The Select Committee was established on 6 August 2025 and is chaired by Nationals MP Nicole Overall.

“I encourage anyone who hasn’t yet made a submission to consider doing so – this is the opportunity to formally raise any questions or concerns as we work to comprehensively address these proposals.” said Nicole.

Parkes Clean Future Alliance are urging those who have not yet made submissions, to do so today, as submissions close at 5pm. Ben Stead of PCFA said “The proposed Sydney landfills are projected to run out of space over the next 5 to 10 years.

After thermal energy from waste was rejected in Sydney, the NSW Government developed a framework that prohibits facilities in NSW as a precautionary measure to protect human health, but excludes Lithgow, Goulburn, Parkes and Tomago from those health protections.”

“Submissions under 250 words will still be counted but will be grouped together. Submissions over 250 words are more impactful.” said Ben.

The deadline for submissions is today, 5pm Friday, 31 October. Both individuals and organisations can make submissions, and you do not have to be located in Parkes. Anyone can make a submission and every submission counts.

To lodge a submission go to the Inquiry webpage www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/committees/listofcommittees/Pages/committee-details.aspx?pk=337 and select the ‘Submissions’ tab.

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller Is Awarded Highest Honour

October 30, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Pictured is Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM being presented the Councillor Lilliane Brady OAM Award by Ron Hoenig MP

Forbes Shire Mayor and President of Local Government NSW, Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM has been recognised for her three decades of service to the people of Forbes and the Local Government sector in general with the Councillor Lilliane Brady OAM Award.

Mayor Miller received the highest honour at the 2025 Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government held at Parliament House, Sydney.

“We desperately need to highlight the strong, fierce, determined and inspiring women doing incredible work in their communities. I really love that these awards recognise projects and initiatives that are aimed at increasing female participation in local government,” Mayor Miller said.

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller was the first woman to be elected as President of the NSW Shires Association in its 100 year history, and is the only elected councillor to serve as the President of both the NSW Shires Association and Local Government NSW.

Mayor Miller was presented the award by Ron Hoenig MP, who said “I have known Cr Phyllis Miller, Mayor of Forbes Shire Council and President of Local Government NSW for many years. Phyllis joined Forbes Shire Council 30 years ago wanting to give back to the community that supported her through a family tragedy. Since then she simply hasn’t stopped.

Phyllis is one of the smartest people in local government and one of the most passionate about advancing the sector – especially for regional and rural councils. She isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and take on a fight to stand up for her community and the whole local government sector.

I was incredibly pleased to present Phyllis with the prestigious Lilliane Brady OAM Award at the 2025 Women in Local Government Awards. Her contribution to advancing women’s participation as councillors has been immense and she is truly deserving of this award.”

Meet Author Adam Courtenay At Forbes Library

October 30, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Pictured is Adam Courtenay, son of beloved Australian Author Bryce Courtenay

Meet author Adam Courtenay, son of the late bestselling author Bryce Courtenay, at Forbes Library on Thursday 6 November 10.30am – 12 noon. Please book your place by calling Forbes Library on 6852 1463.

Dynamic, complex, driven: Bryce Courtenay was all of these as well as one of Australia’s most beloved authors. To his son Adam, he was larger than life, mercurial, and impossible to know completely. In this moving, unforgettable memoir, Adam searches for the real Bryce.

Bryce Courtenay was one of Australia’s highest-selling and most-loved authors as well as a larger-than-life character. From his first book, The Power of One, he captivated readers. With his third, the non-fiction title April Fool’s Day, he captured their hearts.

Many of his fans would have thought they knew him, and they did – they knew the version of him that he wanted to present to the world.

Bryce’s son Adam knew the Bryce the rest of the world only glimpsed, or never saw at all. His father was a natural born storyteller and occasional fabulist whose tales never quite felt true.

Several years after his death, Bryce still looms large in Adam’s life. In seeking to understand his father, who made so many people happy with his books, Adam recounts his own 1960s and 1970s childhood, Bryce’s career in advertising and his metamorphosis into a bestselling novelist.

In the years after The Power of One, Bryce became a household name even as his personal life was plagued by tragedy and heartbreak. All the while Adam did his best to love his father and hang on through the wild ride of his life.

Forbes Preschool Host Art Show And Raise Funds For RMHC

October 30, 2025 by Roxane Manley

The children spent weeks leading up to the big day painting, drawing, and imagining their creations capturing hearts and raising funds all at once.

For many years, the team at Forbes Preschool had talked about the possibility of hosting an art show. It was one of those wonderful ideas that kept getting pushed down the “to do later” list as other things popped up. But this year, it finally happened, and with a heartfelt purpose.

With many local families having spent time at Ronald McDonald House in both Central West and Westmead, this was the perfect opportunity to give back. The Preschool team and children worked hard in the many weeks leading up to the exhibition ensuring a successful Art show and Auction.

The preschool was buzzing with excitement as families, friends, and locals came together to admire the children’s artwork, bid on donated pieces from local artists, and take part in raffles and silent auctions.

The walls were filled with colour, laughter echoed throughout, and there was a sense of pride in what everyone had helped to create.

Director of the Preschool, Amy Shine expressed “A massive thank you to everyone who donated their time, prizes, and art; to those who bought raffle tickets, artwork, and just came along to show support. None of it would have been possible without you.

“I would especially like to acknowledge the hard work of the Preschool team, they worked so hard leading up to the event and on the night, without their collective efforts none of this would have been made possible, their dedication, commitment and creativity continues to go above and beyond.”

What started as an idea many years ago has now become a highlight of the year, a beautiful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together for a cause that truly matters. It was a huge success, with the final profit of $20,000 being shared between the Ronald McDonald Houses.

Be The Hope That The Central NSW Community Needs This Christmas

October 30, 2025 by Roxane Manley

The Salvation Army is calling on the community of Central NSW to dig deep this Christmas as they launch their annual Christmas Appeal, aimed at helping those who need support during the festive season.

The Christmas period can intensify financial and emotional pressures for those already experiencing disadvantage. As high prices continue to put stress on local individuals and families, the Salvos goal of $29 million for their Christmas Appeal this year is vital to ensure people get the help they need this Christmas.

During the Christmas period last year, thanks to the generosity of the Australian public, The Salvation Army nationally: received over 350,000 gifts and toys for families who might otherwise have gone without, provided over 177,000 meals to those experiencing homelessness, and provided more than 89,000 bed nights for families in need of accommodation during the festive season.

To find out about local Christmas event information, to donate to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal, or if you need support from The Salvos, please visit salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58). Donations can also be made at any local Salvos Store.

Tips For Itchy, Watery, Red Eyes This Spring

October 30, 2025 by Eyecare Plus

If you’re one of the estimated 20% of Australians that suffer with hayfever, Spring is not a time for celebration but rather a time of sneezing, mucous and the dreaded itchy eyes! Allergic conjunctivitis is the bane of many a hay fever sufferer so what is the best way to manage your itchy eyes?

1. Avoid your allergy triggers. Plants, grasses or pollens that trigger your allergy symptoms should be avoided. Try saving outdoor activities to evening or just before dawn when the pollen count is lower.

2. Keep allergens away. Regularly washing your face, hair and around your eyes, frequently changing your clothing and linen can help to remove the little allergen particles that accumulate.

3. Treat your itchy eyes with medication. Over the counter antihistamine eye drops can provide relief for the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. Avoid using the “red eye” drops. These temporarily hide the redness without addressing the cause of your red, itchy eyes. For persistent allergy, use a mast cell stabiliser eyedrop leading up to and during spring to act as a preventative. These are available as a combination drop alongside an antihistamine.

4. Treat any concurrent dry eye disease. Having dry eyes will exacerbate your allergic conjunctivitis symptoms and our tears act as a natural means of flushing allergens out of our eyes. Watch out with taking oral antihistamines as these can cause dry eyes.

Book an appointment at Hansens Optometrists where we can formulate a personalised plan. We can prescribe more effective eye drops and treat other eye problems that might be masquerading as allergy symptoms.

Three Mates Going The ‘Uncomfortable’ Distance For Homelessness

October 23, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Pictured about to cross the finish line after running 100km from Condobolin to Forbes is mates Sam Parish, Bill Ryan and Sam Johnston.

Local lads Sam Parish, Bill Ryan and Sam Johnston were so inspired by Nedd Brockman’s thousand mile run in Oct 2024 that they set themselves the goal of doing 10% of his 161km a day (16.1km). After completing that goal, they started to think “what’s next?”.Sam Parish said, “Someone suggested, ‘how far is it from Condo to Forbes?’ It was pretty hard to back down from the crazy idea once it has been said out loud, so the preparations began.”

A lot of training was involved – 15 weeks of running three times a week, with various types of running including easy runs, long runs and tempo runs.

“On the day itself, the support we had from friends, family and partners was unbelievable and quite frankly the only way we finished,” said Sam.

The three are raising money and awareness for homelessness, through a charity called We are Mobilise. Sam said, “The three of us, with our close friends group also ran the Nedd Brockmann Gala Ball last year to really support Nedd from his hometown and celebrate the amazing movement he has started.

“Through that we all got to meet Noah Yang, Founder/CEO of We are Mobilise, so we got to form a personal connection to We are Mobilise and the amazing team.”

The trio have raised $18,800. You can still make a donation or even start your own challenge at: www.neddsuncomfortablechallenge.com/fundraisers/FRC.

Fresh Fight For Right To Repair

October 23, 2025 by Roxane Manley

NSW Farmers has welcomed calls from the Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh to introduce a legislated right to repair for agricultural machinery.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin said commitment to legislate this was long overdue. “Right now, much of our modern farm machinery can only be fixed by an ‘authorised repairer’, but this often costs a fortune and there’s the likelihood of costly delays,” Mr Martin said.

“We can choose who fixes our cars and trucks, but can’t choose who fixes the ag machines that help us feed and clothe the nation – and that’s costing our industry time, money and productivity.

“Farmers should be able to choose to use and support a qualified local repairer or do repairs and maintenance work themselves if they’re qualified, so they can get their machinery fixed without huge costs or wait times.”

According to the Productivity Commission, legislating a right to repair agricultural machinery would boost agricultural productivity by $97 million annually.

“We need our tractors, headers and other machines to be fixed efficiently if we’re to keep putting clothes on backs and food on tables,” Mr Martin said.
