Forbes Garden Club: April Meeting Report

May 29, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Jan Diprose was guest speaker at the April meeting.

The Forbes Garden Club April meeting was held in the lovely gardens at the home of John Browne. President Marg Dent welcomed 28 present with six apologies. The guest speaker was Jan Diprose from the Weddin Community Native Nursery at Grenfell. This volunteer nursery started under the Landcare banner, where seeds are collected sorted and stored. They are grown in hot houses and sold to farmers and Shire Councils. John Browne also spoke on his garden which is home to many unusual plants.

Flower of the month winners were 1st Denise Thurston (Clematis), 2nd Elvy Quirk(Dahlia) and 3rd Marlene (Huf-Rose). Raffle winners were Joy Hocking, Elvy Quirk, Janette Thomas, Meg Scholefield and John Browne.

The recent bus trip to visit the Tumbling Downs Olive Grove at Bogan Gate started out with a bus filled with members and friends all eager for an outing in this beautiful autumn weather. Participants were welcomed by Colin and Shelley Nutley with a delicious Devonshire Tea. Shelley spoke of the history of their farm and how they pick and press the olives, before tasting the oil and a variety of jams relishes.

The next stop was visiting three gardens at Parkes. The first garden was at the home of Leah Douglas, who had been inundated with the 2022 floods. The garden featured numerous advanced trees, a large area to explore and tend. The next garden was that of Nancy McColl – a large cottage type garden which led visitors along lots of paths around her home filled with trees and shrubs. The last garden of the day the group visited was Fay and Kelvie Blackstock’s home. This garden featured all manor of creations from old machinery made by Kelvie with succulents planted everywhere. Garden Club members are very appreciative of Denise Thurston for planning this fantastic day.

Restraint Checks Securing Child Safety In Parkes And Forbes

May 29, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor pictured at the recent child restraint checking events in Parkes and Forbes.

The recent free child restraint checking events, a service provided by Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils, discovered that 79% of the child restraints checked were incorrectly fitted.

The service provided free child restraint inspections in Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin, by local Authorised Child Restraint Fitters. Nineteen child restraints were brought in by parents and grandparents for checking – mostly rearward/forward facing converter child restraints or forward facing/booster converter child restraints. There were also two installations.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said these bi-annual events continue to be popular.

“The child restraints that were incorrectly fitted had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child” Ms Suitor said.

“The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. It is important to make sure that your precious cargo is safe and buckled up every time they are in the car – whether it’s a five minute or five-hour journey” Ms Suitor said.

While these safety checks were free biannual events, local Authorised Child Restraint Fitters can install and check child restraints all year-round for a small fee. The local fitters in Parkes are Col Fletcher Ford & Kia and Parkes Tyrepower. The local fitter in Forbes is Jelbart Dawson. The local fitter in Condobolin is Central West Tyre Service.

National child restraint laws have been in effect since 2010. All children must be safely fastened into the correct child restraint for their age and size. Children need to be at least 145cm or taller to use an adult lap sash seatbelt.

Research shows children who are not restrained correctly are seven times more likely to sustain life-threatening injuries in a crash than those who are properly secured.

You can visit www.childcarseats.com.au for more information about child restraint rules.

May 22, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Forbes: Construction on the 1,796m2 site will begin in early 2026, with an expected opening towards the end of that year.

Australia Post is expanding its commitment to regional Australia with a major infrastructure investment across New South Wales, announcing the development of six new greenfield sites in Tumut, Leeton, Casino, Deniliquin, Forbes and Byron Bay.

Australia Post has announced a significant infrastructure investment in regional Australia, encompassing the development of several new sites impacting communities across regional NSW. This includes the construction of a new 1,796m² greenfield facility in Forbes, and will also consolidate parcel deliveries from the Parkes area.

The Forbes facility will have the capacity to handle up to 2,200 parcels per day, designed to improve delivery times and support the needs of both businesses and consumers in these communities. Construction will commence on the site in early 2026, with an expected opening towards the end of that year.

These sites will bolster capacity to support parcel volume growth and improve service across rural and regional communities.

These purpose-built facilities are designed to boost parcel processing capability – handling between 900 parcels to 2,200 parcels per day – and enhance service across rural and regional communities as well as improving operational safety and efficiency.

Sustainability is a key focus of the expansion, with all sites featuring 50kW rooftop solar power generation, and a number also investing in rainwater harvesting and EV charging capability.

Australia Post General Manager Network Development & Support Services, Shane Plant said the investment reflects Australia Post’s commitment to improving services for regional communities across Australia.

“Beyond speed and efficiency, we’re focused on providing safer workplaces for our team members and building environmentally responsible infrastructure that can serve communities well into the future,” Mr. Plant said.

Work Progresses On Gallery Forbes Exterior

May 22, 2025 by Roxane Manley

The Gallery Forbes site is a hive of activity as work is progressing on the exterior of the cultural and arts precinct. Construction is well underway on the exterior of the second storey extension, the roof is now on and some painting preparation is happening.

Chairperson of the Forbes Arts Society Trudy Mallick said, “the exterior will be a balancing act between preserving the old and incorporating the new. Having served as a key civic hub in its former life, first as a bank and then as an ambulance station, we can appreciate the amount of interest in this project.

“It’s heartening and reassuring to see the work being done on site to bring this beloved, prominent building back to life. It’s been a long time coming and we’d like to thank the Forbes community for its patience as we continue to progress this very exciting project forward.”

This stage of the project will take the building to lock up.

The Forbes Cultural Centre (Gallery Forbes) development is part of the ‘Boosting the Lachlan Valley Economy Art Project’ which is proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund, the Forbes Arts Society, Forbes Shire Council, Lachlan Shire Council and Evolution Mining.

The ‘Boosting the Lachlan Valley Economy Art Project’ aims to foster visual arts throughout the Forbes Shire, grow the visitor economy and promote the Lachlan Valley region as a premier tourism destination.

The project also includes the Gum Swamp redevelopment and extension of the Sculpture Down the Lachlan trail.

Parkes Local Richard Jefferay Gears Up For Tractor Trek

May 15, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Pictured L-R Lindsay Wall, Richard Jefferay, and his dad – also named Richard Jefferay.

Tyrepower staff around the country are ramping up their support this year to help raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Between August 11-22, Tyrepower Parkes owner Richard Jefferay will embark on his third annual Tractor Trek from Bourke (NSW) to Birdsville (QLD), covering over 1240km to raise funds and awareness for the disease.

To date the Tractor Trek alone has raised over $90,000 for PCFA, but in 2025, Richard has raised the bar with a fundraising target of $100,000.

To kick off Mr Jefferay’s fundraising, Tyrepower held a fundraising auction at the annual Tyrepower International Conference in Perth attended by store owners from Australia and New Zealand, raising over $150,000 for PCFA.

This inspiring trek is deeply personal for Richard, “My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and I’ve got a couple of Massey Ferguson tractors, so I thought it’d be cool to drive tractors from town to town in that back country for a good cause,” Mr Jefferay said.

“This year we have eight blokes driving through remote dirt roads between Parkes and Birdsville at top speeds of 23km an hour. Even Richard Snr, will be part of the support crew, only driving from time to time. Apparently “too buggered to drive the whole way.”

“The Tractor Trek creates strong talking points in the regional communities that we pass through and creates much needed awareness about prostate cancer and early detection.”

Have You Had Your Macula Checked?

May 15, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Have you had your macula checked? May is Macular Month, and a good reminder that if you are over 50 you should be having regular macula health checks.

The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina which deals with fine detail. A healthy macula is vital for good vision.

Macular Degeneration is a disease that causes central vision loss. This makes it very difficult to read, recognise faces, watch TV and even obtain a driver’s license.

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. It is more common as we age, and the risk of Macular Degeneration increases if there is a family history of macula problems, cardiovascular disease or you are a smoker.

Like most diseases, early detection and treatment for Macular Degeneration is vital to maintain good vision throughout life.

Hansen Eyecare Plus has all the latest technology for a comprehensive eye exam, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT is the gold standard for the early detection of Macular Degeneration.

Unlike standard retinal photography, OCT enables detailed assessment of the deeper layers of the retina.

DRY MD
Characterised by a slow, progressive loss of the RPE cells due to the build up of drusen at the macula. This makes up about 85% of moderate to advanced MD cases resulting in a gradual deterioration of the central vision. Diet and a special formulation of vitamins and high-dose antioxidants, such as MD eyes have been shown to slow down the progression of MD in those with moderate to advanced MD in at least one eye.

WET MD
This affects about two-thirds of advanced MD patients. This occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the macular and these vessels canspontaneously bleed, leading to a sudden loss of vision requiring immediate medical treatment. Treatment often requires regular injections to shrink the blood vessels.

To have your macular thoroughly checked, make an appointment today with Hansen Eyecare Plus P: 6863 5577. Book online www.opticalbookings.com.au/hansen-optometrists-parkes/store

Five New Farming Forecaster Probes In The Central West

May 15, 2025 by Roxane Manley

Central West Local Land Services has installed 5 soil probe and weather stations across the region with the data avaialble to landholders via the Farming Forecaster website.

Central West Local Land Services has installed five new soil probe and weather stations as part of the Farming Forecaster Project. The sites at Mendooran, Geurie, Parkes, Jemalong (Forbes) and Grenfell, aim to equip graziers with predictive forecasts on weather, soil moisture, and pasture production.

These sites will be incorporated into a wider network of soil probe and weather stations across Australia. Rohan Leach, Mixed Farming Advisor at Central West Local Land Services, said the Farming Forecaster program operates by collecting data from the soil moisture probes and weather stations.

“The data is transformed into user-friendly weather and soil moisture data, which is readily available online” said Rohan.

“Farming Forecaster will also provide estimates of future pasture growth over the next 3-4 months, compared with historic seasons and climate forecasts.”

The website’s output will be a valuable resource for landholders in the Central West, helping them make informed decisions about grazing management and understand the role of stored soil moisture in future pasture growth.

Paul Tognetti, the host of the Grenfell site, has found the probe and weather station extremely useful. “I’ve just started having a look at the data online and am really pleased with the info it is showing me” Paul said.

“The weather information is great with things like wind speed and direction great for spraying and the easy-to-read daily rainfall chart great for my record keeping.

“This type of information will be invaluable for pasture management and livestock planning in the Central West region, as well as managing risks associated with predicted declines in feed availability, such as conserving fodder, purchasing fodder and/ or destocking.”

Learn more about the Farming Forecaster Project or to enquire about hosting a future site, please contact Rohan Leach on 0417 021 795 or via rohan.leach@lls.nsw.gov.au
