Callaghan Trophy Success

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Sponsor Albie Callaghan (centre) with grandson Harrison, son Todd, and son-in-law Brodie.

The Saturday competition was the annual holding of the ‘Albie Callaghan Trophy’, an 18-Hole, four person Ambrose Medley event, sponsored by Albie Callaghan. This format usually provides for a quick round, with a specified number of drives per player, but often Murphy’s Law intervenes.

The winners were a group led by new member Dave Tilsdley, with three visitors being Mark Wood, Mike Blackstock and Jarrod Kelly, with a score of 55 3/8. As Albie said, “Full credit to them for playing so well on an unfamiliar course.” Runners-up were Brett Thomas, Andy Cogswell, Nigel Davies from Caragabal, and new member Luke Flakeyar on 57 and a half nett.

The ball sweep went to 59.5 points: 58 1/4 – J Reid, A Cole, L Whitfield, M Simmons; 58 3/8 – Albie, Todd, Harrison Cal- laghan, B Hodges; 58 1/2 – Niel, Carolyn, Brianna Duncan, A Grierson; 59 1/4 – J Dobell, N Ryan, J Cutler, G Hooper; 59 1/4 K Steele-Park, A Tooth, T Cogswell, A Mc- Kinnon; 59 1/2 – P Dawson, K Herbert, P Cowhan, R Baker.

The NTP’s went to 9th – Ladies: B Drabsch, Men: J Bernardi; 18th – Ladies: S Redfern, Men: A Cole. The third Hole Super Pin went to Ron Morris, who seems to consistently do well on that hole, despite his protestations.

This was a momentous playing of the ‘Albie Callaghan Trophy’, but unfortunately without a fairy tale ending. Albie was thrilled to play alongside son Todd, grandson Harrison and son-in-law Brodie and they were happy to land in the fourth spot.

Despite the sunny weather on Sunday there was no Stableford Medley, as only a smidgeon of players ventured out.

The 2020-21 ‘Summer Super Sixes’ Competition, sponsored by ASI Capital, will commence with competitive rounds on 12 October. A handicapping period will be played from Thursday, 1 to Sunday 11 October for those that are new and want to participate.

The Forbes Nissan Classic on Saturday, 14 and Sunday, 15 November is set to widen its range of participants after recent changes to COVID-19 restrictions, which should ensure a larger than expected field.

Nominations are urgently sought for the Events Committee, and players should give consideration to participation on the Management Committee. Contact the Events Committee Chairman Steve Grallelis if you want to know more.

Important events to note are Sunday, 25 October, the VW Scramble. Saturday, 31 October is the Kristie Carpenter Memorial Trophy Day. Friday, 23 October is the Legends Pro-Am, it is uncertain if this will proceed, but keep your eyes open for details.

Saturday, 3 October is Monthly Medal Day for the men, sponsored by Forbes Concrete. Stableford Medley’s are scheduled for Sunday, 4 and Monday, 5 October, with daylight saving commencing on Sunday.
