Congratulations to Oscar Hendry for winning Best Regional Entry at the 2024 Parliament of NSW Parli-Flicks Short Film Awards.

Red Bend Catholic College: The creativity of young filmmakers was celebrated at the 2024 Parliament of NSW Parli-Flicks Short Film Award, and our Year 7 student Oscar Hendry won a medal for Best Regional Entry. This exciting competition challenged students from Year 5 to 12 across NSW to craft a one-minute short film exploring a thought-provoking question: If you were a Member of Parliament, what law would you pass and how would you implement it? Oscar’s video highlighted the doctor shortage in regional NSW and proposed incentives for doctors practicing in towns with a population of less than 20,000.

Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society: Less than two weeks until auditions for Mamma Mia. A lot of people have told us they are auditioning, but not yet registered.

Registrations are essential for those wishing to audition. So far we have about 40 people registered, but we can still fit more in. We will particularly need men. Mature men and young men (18-30ish). Please check out the audition pack at the link provided on their Facebook page, then get in touch with your favoured audition sessions.

NSW Government: Are you an essential worker who has moved to regional NSW (or thinking about it)? We’ve got a free service to help with all the life stuff—like finding housing, choosing childcare, job options for your partner, and more. You can check out The Welcome Experience here nsw.gov.au/welcomeexperience

PCYC Parkes: Calling all passionate community members! PCYC Parkes is in need of dedicated individuals to join our committee and help shape the future of our club.

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers who share our vision of providing positive programs and activities for the young people of Parkes. If you’re interested in making a difference and contributing your skills and time, please contact Kim via email ksherrett@pcycnsw.org.au

Regional Business Supplies: Big congratulations to Marty, our amazing winner of the September Step Challenge. Not only did she crush her steps, but she also stepped up in the most heartwarming way.

Marty used her prize money to buy groceries and generously donated them to Georgie’s Pantry, spreading kindness and making a real difference in our community.

Thank you to Marty for helping inspire us all to keep moving and to give back.

If you would like to make a donation to Georgies Pantry you can find them at 275 Clarinda Street, Parkes or contact them on (02) 6862 2954.

November 21, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The Canowindra Christmas Market is fast approaching. Organised and presented by the Canowindra Progress Association, the Christmas Market is supported by Cabonne Council and the NSW Government Open Streets funding, making it possible to fund this free family event.

Come along and find all your Christmas gifts with Canowindra businesses, market stalls and more. Food stalls will be set up on Gaskill Street with Salt Bush Lamb, epic wedges, sausage sizzles, burgers and Thai food.

The kids zone will be in full swing with face painting by Sue Hodge, the jumping castle in the Canowindra Services Club, and two fun games with inflatable soccer darts and inflatable axe throw to keep the kids entertained for hours.

Also for the kids, grab the “Canowindra Passport” and get your paper stamped at different stops and shops and go into the draw to win a great prize with thanks to The Age of Fishes Museum.

Entertainment from Sik As, Nerida Cuddy and De Ja Vu will keep the party atmosphere going all evening.

See you there on 29th November! Gaskill Street closes at 3pm to traffic and the Christmas Markets commence at 5pm.

Mayoral Notes

November 21, 2024 by Roxane Manley

It was an honour to be among the 150 mayors and executives present at the Country Mayors Association meeting on Friday in Sydney. It was an even greater honour to be elected on the Executive Board again to serve another two year term.

While in Sydney I was able to catch up with several State Ministers, including Premier Chris Minns, Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig, Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison and Health Minister Ryan Park.

Are you coming along to our first ever International Men’s Day? It will be held on Friday 29 November. Council is inviting the community to come down to Lions Park from 7am – 10am to hear from Guest speakers Cr Chris Roylance and a representative from Talk to Me Bro. Guests can enjoy a BBQ breakfast, dip in an ice bath and enjoy a walk around the lake. For more information on this event, please contact Council’s Event’s Team on community@forbes.nsw.gov.au or 02 6850 2300.

It has been two years since the 2022 floods and I know there has been a bit of discussion about Forbes commemorating the event similar to other local communities. The fact is this time two years ago, Forbes had now suffered three major flood fronts, I was looking back on pics from October where some water levels over roads was already at 700mm. I am not quite sure, just as many in the community weren’t sure, when you would mark the date of the Forbes floods? I am also proud that our community has diligently pressed on moving forward rather than looking back. As we have done since every flood event our community has endured.

As the busy season approaches please mark your calendar with Friday 6 December for our next Tradies night, this is a great night to celebrate our local trades who have been working hard all year on so many projects throughout the year. We hope to see you all there at the Golf Club from 6pm.

The date for the ever popular Carols by Candelight has been locked in for Saturday 14 December. There will be live performances, Santa will be on site from 7pm and carols will begin at 8pm. There will be food vendors and glow sticks available for purchase. Join us in Victoria Park from 7pm-10pm.

Until next week

Major Funding Injection For Flood-hit Central West Councils

November 21, 2024 by Roxane Manley

NSW Labor’s spokesperson for Orange and Barwon Stephen Lawrence MLC has welcomed the announcement of successful Central West road projects receiving funding as part of the $32 million Regional Transport Resilience Fund (RTRF).

Jointly funded by the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments, the RTRF will benefit Cabonne, Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan councils by providing them with vital funding to build flood-damaged road and transport infrastructure back better.

Mr Lawrence said the announcement of the successful projects came after many months of hard work and advocacy from local councils and various government departments working together on solutions.

“This critical investment from the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments will help our communities bounce back and provide vital road and transport infrastructure for future generations.”

Details of RTRF projects are as follows:

Parkes Shire Council: $5.65 million for a new bridge on The Bogan Way between Trundle and Parkes, a new bridge on Middle Trundle Road, the installation of culverts and causeways at various locations on Middle Trundle Road. $1.08 million for the installation of new concrete causeways as part of Council’s causeway improvement program.

Dolly’s Dream Workshops Help Combat Bullying In Australian Schools

November 21, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Dolly’s Dream School Workshops. Online safety and anti-bullying workshops for students of all ages, delivered in schools nationally. www.dollysdream.org.au/what-we-do/school-workshops.

Dolly’s Dream continues its purpose to change the culture of bullying by delivering impactful anti-bullying and digital safety workshops in primary and secondary schools across Australia, helping support schools and students to build safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for everyone.

We know that bullying can cause deep and lasting harm, affecting a young person’s confidence, mental health, and even their future. Dolly’s Dream was founded in the wake of tragedy in 2018 when 14-yearold Dolly Everett took her life because of relentless bullying, and we are saddened by the recent tragic loss of more young lives due to bullying.

“We established Dolly’s Dream because we didn’t want other families to ever have to go through the heartache we have experienced. It breaks my heart to hear more precious lives have been lost due to bullying and more families are suffering,” said Kate Everett, Dolly’s mother and founder of Dolly’s Dream.

A report from The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) found that Australian school students were most bullied among comparable English-speaking countries with around one in six students saying they’ve been made fun of by peers.

A recent survey of our Dolly’s Dream audience via social media revealed that 89% of the 2,214 respondents said they had been bullied at school, with 74% being teenagers. Evidently, the problem is not going away.

Dolly’s Dream has worked tirelessly for six years delivering support and education to communities and will continue to fight to put an end to bullying – in memory of Dolly and the other lives that have since been lost.

So far this year, Dolly’s Dream has delivered over 450 workshops, reaching more than 19,500 students across all year levels, in metropolitan, regional, and rural areas.

Forbes Croquet Club Notes

November 21, 2024 by Elvy Quirk

On Saturday 16th November a very gusty, windy morning, Aussie Croquet was played with a small number of 25 players, however some good scores were once again recorded. All three games were won by Kevin Rubie and David West.

Golf Croquet was played on 19th November on rather a warm day, once again with a good number in attendance. Three games were won by John Cole, John Farah, Mal Smith and May Jones.

Our Croquet lawns are looking good after the extra watering given, as well as the lovely fall of rain.

A special thank you to the workers of Forbes Shire Council who tend to the mowing and marking of our lawns. A great job, well done.

Forbes Croquet Club members extend their deepest sympathy to Bruce Toole one of our valued members who recently lost his son, Neil. To you Bruce, and to your family our thoughts are with you.

The Christmas season is almost with us and we are having a luncheon in the shade area on 10th December after play. Our special Christmas luncheon and prizegiving day will be held on Tuesday 17th December at the Vandenberg Hotel, 12 pm.

The last day of play for 2024 will be 14th December with play to resume on 7th January 2025.

Croquet is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, and it provides a great opportunity for socialising and spending time outdoors. Whilst Golf Croquet is the easiest to learn, Aussie Croquet on Saturday does have more tactical play, but it is not difficult to learn.
