Mayoral Notes

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The big news this week is the change to nose in parking in Lachlan Street from Brownes Lane to Rankin Street. New lines will be painted during nightworks on Sunday 8 December and Monday 9 December, so as of next week the residents of Forbes will be parking nose in. It’s a win for local businesses, as not only will they not be disturbed by the works but there will be additional car parks in Lachlan Street for the busy December trade.

More parks will be needed around the new cultural centre (former ambulance station) as when that is ready mid next year.

There will be two disabled parks allocated in the northern and southern ends of Lachlan Street. One will be outside the cultural centre and the second will near the former NAB.

Nose in parking in Lachlan Street has been discussed since the CBD masterplan (2020) and following the success of the Templar Street trial over two years ago.

The recommendation was passed by Council’s Traffic Committee, with representatives from Transport for NSW, the community, Police, the Roads Safety Officer and Forbes Shire Council. For those with questions, you can meet with Director of Engineering, Richard Jane, on the corner of Lachlan and Templar Street on Friday morning to ask any questions or find out more.

Is there a tradie in your household? Are they coming to the Build Forbes Tradies Night on Friday 6 December. To be held from 6pm-9pm at the Golf Club – the night is for tradesman and developers to find out more about Forbes development trends and contracting opportunities. There will also be agencies offering business support services, as well as a chance for tradies to find out more about how to work with Council. Free tickets can be booked at 123 tix.

Thank you to all who participated in our first ever International Men’s Day event last week. I was unable to attend but was given good reports from those who were. What a great opportunity to acknowledge the men in our community. International Women’s Day has always been a very successful event in Forbes so it is nice to see the men taking the opportunity to organise an event as well.

Thank you to the Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance for leading this event for the council and community.

Until next week
Phyllis Miller, OAM – Forbes Mayor

eID For Sheep And Goats In Nsw

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Key changes are coming into effect on 1 January 2025.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD) is reminding livestock producers and industry stakeholders that mandatory electronic identification (eID) is set to take effect from 1 January 2025.

The following key requirements will be starting 1 January 2025: 1. Mandatory use of eID devices such as tags for all sheep and goats born from 1 January 2025, prior to leaving the property of birth. 2. For property-to-property movements, any sheep or goats with an eID device must be scanned, and the entire movement uploaded to the NLIS database. 3. Saleyards and goat depots need to scan eIDs and record individual livestock sheep and goat movements on the NLIS database.

NSW DPIRD Director of Sheep and Goat Traceability, Kiowa Fenner, highlighted the importance of the new requirements in strengthening the integrity of the state’s livestock traceability system.

“The introduction of mandatory eID for sheep and goats represents a significant step forward in biosecurity and livestock management for the NSW sheep and goat industry,” Ms. Fenner said.

“If you move or sell lambs or kids born next year, they will need an eID device before departure.”

The NSW Government has put in place a staggered implementation of eID to assist understanding and awareness. To this end, all sheep and goat movements will not be required until 1 January 2027.

These changes will improve the traceability of animals across the supply chain, helping us respond more effectively to disease outbreaks and ensuring the continued competitiveness of our agricultural industries.

The implementation is on track, with processors already having commenced scanning eIDs and uploading eID data to the NLIS database from 30 June 2024.

For more information on sheep and goat eID requirements visit the NSW DPIRD website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/dpi/bfs/your-role-in-biosecurity/primary-producers/nlis/eID

Regional Australia To Benefit

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Housing announcement with (left to right) Cr Kevin Beatty (Cabonne), David Littleproud and Sam Farraway.

Regional Australia will receive its fair share of the Coalition’s $5 billion home building plan, with a target of 30 per cent of the funding to be invested in regional, rural and remote Australia.

Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud announced that a future Coalition Government would set an ambitious target of 30 per cent of the $5 billion Housing Infrastructure Programme for investing in the regions, benefiting areas such as the Central West.

David said “The Coalition will invest in shovel-ready infrastructure through our new Housing Infrastructure Programme.

“An elected Coalition Government will commit $5 billion to get these projects moving, unlocking up to 500,000 homes across Australia and we want a fair share of that funding in regional Australia.”

A Coalition Government will also free up more than 100,000 homes by: Reducing migration numbers, compared to Labor who has brought in more than one million migrants in their first two years in office, putting a two-year ban on foreign investors and temporary residents purchasing existing homes, working with the building and construction industry and bringing in people on skilled visas to support local tradies, tackling union corruption that has contributed to driving up the costs of building by 30 per cent, freezing further changes to the National Construction Code to ease red tape and compliance burdens for builders.

The Nationals’ candidate for Calare Sam Farraway said if elected, he would work with council to speed up projects in the Central West.

“The Coalition’s policy is a game-changer for young people in the Central West who are struggling to break into the housing market,” Mr Farraway said.

Landcare Australia On The Search For Soil Heroes

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

A $20,000 prize is up for grabs for Australian Soil Health Experts.

Landcare Australia has opened nominations for the 2025 General Jeffery Soil Health Award.

Back for the third successive round, the prestigious General Jeffery Soil Health Award recognises the work of people who care for soil health and who are educating or inspiring others.

Previous award winners and notable figures in the world of soil health and science, Dr Oliver Knox and Emerita Professor Dr Lynnette Abbot have confirmed they will be part of the specialist advisory panel to select the winner of the 2025 General Jeffery Soil Health Award.

The 2022 winner, leading soil health champion, educator and researcher, of ‘Soil your Undies’ fame, Dr Oliver Knox said “We all have a responsibility to our soils and our soil health and the more we all do, the more likely we are to see a fantastic future for Australia’s soils.”

The two previous award winners have teamed up to encourage nominations for the influential General Jeffrey Soil Health Award.

When asked what he was hoping to see from the next round of nominations, Dr Knox said “Passion, drive and impact. Soil is full of surprises, so I’m hoping to learn from all of the nominations and expect to feel disappointed there can be only one winner. It’s exciting and all that is needed now is for some nominations, so that are you waiting for? Nominate your soil’s guru.”

Leading soil scientist Emerita Professor Lynette Abbott and winner of the inaugural prize in 2020, is encouraging soil science experts across Australia to nominate colleagues for the prestigious national award.

“It is a very valuable process for highlighting the contributions that others are making to soil health in their various ways.

There are many approaches.”

Caravan Industry Calls For Safety First This Christmas

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

The Caravan Industry Association of Australia is calling on everyone to keep safety top of mind this summer, whether you’re planning your trip, heading out on the road, or enjoying our beautiful countryside at your favourite camping spot.

As we approach the major holiday period of the year, Caravan Industry Association of Australia is encouraging caravaners this holiday to focus is focusing on Pre-Planning: Emphasising the importance of vehicle servicing and safe towing practices. Road Safety: Highlighting measures for staying safe while travelling on the roads, and taking regular breaks. Water Safety: Promoting awareness around staying safe in and around water. Caravan Holiday Park Shared Spaces Safety: Encouraging responsible behaviour and safety in communal areas within caravan parks.

We know from the rising death tolls on our roads, 1063 Australians have lost their lives on our roads this year alone, up 12% on 2023 (ABS). The top three contributing factors leading to this loss of life is the fatal three, inattention, speed and fatigue.

Road Safety Research indicates: Road users are most likely to have a crash on Monday or Sunday as drivers return from their holidays. Crashes are most likely to occur between 10am and midday. Whilst crashes are more likely to occur in urban centres, fatalities are more likely to occur on regional roads.

We want to make sure caravan and campers have the most amazing summer break, but most importantly, we want everyone to get back home safely . Towing handbooks are distributed free of charge each year. https://www.letsgocaravanandcamping.com.au/safety/ https://coexist.org.au/

Representative Honours For Both Kailab And Trent Tyne

December 5, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Kailab Tyne pictured in action at The World Blackball Championships in England.

Kailab Tyne recently returned from the World Blackball Championships in England. Blackball is the English standard in eight ball pool and one of the most popular billiard sports in the world.

Blackball (also known as English pool) is a variant of billiards played on smaller 7ft tables. It is played by two players with 16 balls (one white cue ball, one black, seven red, seven yellow).

The Forbes & Parkes Phoenix caught up with Kailab upon his return to Australia, saying of his trip: “England was an awesome experience against the best players I have ever seen. They were just on a different level. There were a lot of games where I didn’t even get to the table, I just sat in the chair watching them play then went and shook their hands. I finished up ranking 44th in the world, which I was very happy with for my first time, especially considering I let a couple of games get away.”

After representing Australia on the International stage, Kailab has just been announced as Captain for the Indigenous Mens Team 1, which will compete in the The Phil Bowie Indigenous Challenge. This is a team match where a Indigenous side of eight players verse an Australian side of eight players on the eve of nationals. All players are selected by the BAPA committee.

“Out of a very talented group of players I was lucky enough to be selected to captain. I was shocked to say the least. I was happy to be able to play, let alone captain.

It is a huge honour,” said Kailab.

Younger brother Trent Tyne is also a talented Blackball player, just being named in the NSW Mens Team. Kailab said of Trent “One of the fellas that I met at the 2024 nationals in Canberra was looking for a bit of a team shake up and I mentioned Trent to him and from there it was all set in motion. The next thing I know he is in, which is awesome. Trent came and watched a fair few of my games in Canberra so he was definitely keen. He started playing very young, he used to play with the cue on his shoulder because he was too little and has probably played more games than I have.”

Next year Kailab will start off in the Muswellbrook Open on the Australia Day long weekend, then onto Nationals in March up at Rockhampton. From there he hasn’t made any plans as yet, a lot of the bigger competitions throughout the year are down in Melbourne.

“I’d love to go to all of them, but it’s pretty expensive following the comps around with travel and accommodation, plus getting the extra days off work here and there. I’d love to be able to get some sponsors on board,” said Kailab.

If there are any businesses interested in sponsoring Kailab and Trent so they can continue on their amazing sporting journey, please reach out at tyne1@bigpond.com.

Macca’s Says Thank You To Forbes And Parkes

November 28, 2024 by Roxane Manley

Crew Members from Macca’s Forbes getting in the spirit on McHappy Day.

Aussies have rallied to help raise a remarkable $6.03 million for McHappy Day this year, with McDonald’s crew and customers showing up like never before to make this one of the most memorable McHappy Days in Australia to date.

The overwhelming support will provide more than 37,600 nights of accommodation at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) nationwide for families of seriously ill or injured children, so they can stay together and close to the care they need, while undergoing surgery or treatment in hospital.

Licensee of McDonald’s Forbes and Parkes, Jenny McLeod said “The day was a huge success, with both (Parkes and Forbes) restaurants raising a combined amount of $9,500.

“We couldn’t have achieved this without our generous customers, motivated crew and dedicated management teams.

“The Parkes RFS were also greatly appreciated – they brought along one of their trucks and a huge bunch of volunteers, who helped with customer service and fundraising on the day.”

This is the second consecutive year McHappy Day has raised over $6 million. All funds raised from McHappy Day go towards helping RMHC continue to support families in need through Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Rooms, Family Retreats, Hospitality Carts and Learning Program to support families through and after their child’s illness or injury.
