New Education Program To Help Solve Australia’s Big Challenges

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Director, CSIRO Education and Outreach, Ruth Carr.

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has launched a five-year, multimillion-dollar STEM Together program that highlights the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) thinking in Year 5-10 students. It encourages them to build transferable skills like innovation, problem solving and critical thinking. It aims to boost representation for student groups, including students from regional schools, girls, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and those from less advantaged areas.

Director of CSIRO Education and Outreach, Ruth Carr, said STEM skills will play a critical role in Australia’s future. “As a country, we must ensure our young people have the skills to face the challenges the world throws at them and make sure Australia remains globally competitive. If we don’t do this we’re going to fall behind,” Ms Carr said.

By valuing strengths like curiosity, critical thinking, perseverance, we hope CSIRO’s program will encourage more students to see themselves in STEM subjects and career paths,” she said.

Nominations for the STEM Together Future Shapers program are open until 2nd May.

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Elizabeth MacGregor

How old are you? 16.

were you named after anyone? No.

What three things would you like to pack in your lunch box every day? A banana, Cruskits with Vegemite and a muesli bar.

If you could choose any job in the world, what would you do? National Women’s Rugby League (NRLW).

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? Buy a car or clothes and shoes.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done? Everything scares me so I always end up chickening out.

If you could meet any historical person, who would that be? Rosa Parks.

What makes you feel like dancing? The music and vibes in the sheds before a footy game.

If you had three wishes, what would you wish for? To make NRLW, always be healthy and a safer world.

CSIRO Study Uncovers The Secret To Long Term Weight Loss Success: CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has revealed that regular self-monitoring behaviours and tracking tools are the secret to losing weight – and keeping it off.

The study initially mapped the total weight loss of 6602 CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet members that had completed the 12-week program. It found 64 per cent lost a clinically significant amount (>five kilograms) of weight at one year, with a sustained average weight loss of 10.6kg, or 11.9 per cent of their starting body weight.

CSIRO research scientist Dr Gilly Hendrie said using tools and support frameworks to educate around diet and nutrition was critical for ongoing societal health and lifestyle improvements, especially given that 67 per cent of Australians are currently overweight or obese.

Are you ready for Netball Season?

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Netball season is only one week away, all players must be registered with NNSW and pay their $20 competition fees. There are players looking for teams, and any teams needing players should email the Secretary.

Saturday Junior Netball

Saturday netball will start up on 29th April for all boys and girls. Woolworths NetSetGo will be played at 9:30am for all boys and girls aged five years and up. Junior skills and games will be played at 10:30am for all boys and girls aged from 12/13 years and under.

The two groups of players can be mixed with the older NetSetGoers and the younger juniors, to give some players two full hours of netball fun. Anyone can come along on 29th April and try the sessions before they register. NetSetGo and junior skills and games sessions are run by accredited coaches with help from any parents who would like to volunteer.

Saturday netball will continue until 26th August with a presentation and celebration of the season, and then the Regional NetSetGo and Junior Mixed Gala day will be held on Sunday 27th August.

Regional Carnivals

Everyone is reminded that regional carnivals are starting, with the Orange carnival on 23rd April. The Bathurst carnival is on 30th April. The Forbes all age carnival is on 7th May, and there has already been a huge response from associations across the state entering teams. All players must be registered with NNSW to be able to play in regional carnivals. Any boys or girls wanting to play in these carnivals should contact secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com

Fuel Standards Could Increase Costs For Farmers

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

NSW Farmers has warned the federal government against hiking costs to operate trucks and tractors in the proposed Fuel Efficiency Standard.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen and Transport Minister Catherine King announced a Fuel Efficiency Standard would be introduced as part of Australia’s first National Electric Vehicle Strategy, aimed at driving cleaner, cheaper to run vehicles. The ministers said Australians households and businesses are missing out on more efficient vehicles, which could save motorists $519 per year in fuel costs.

Farmers were fearful, however, that the fuel standards could make it more expensive to run the diesel vehicles that form the backbone of Australia’s farm sector and transport fleet, in turn increasing the cost of food and goods for consumers.

NSW Farmers Energy Transition Working Group chair Reg Kidd said there were no commercial alternatives to diesel-powered trucks and tractors, and Australia’s large size meant electric vehicles were still not an option to keep the country running.

“There’s a lot of promise in electric vehicles, but the farm and transport sectors are a long way from broad-scale adoption, the technology’s just not there yet,” Mr Kidd said.

“People can choose to drive an electric car to get around town, but you still can’t drive from Dubbo to Broken Hill in one – the distances between charging stations are too great.

“We want people in rural, remote and regional communities to be involved in this discussion, not sidelined as a consequence of a narrow thinking.”

“Genuine engagement and consultation is critical here, because what works even in a large center like Orange doesn’t work further out at West Wyalong,” Mr Kidd said.

“Good intentions alone just won’t cut it, people are keen to do their bit in reducing pollution, but we need to be careful we don’t also reduce our ability to feed ourselves.”

Mayoral Notes

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Next Tuesday is one of the most important days on the Australian calendar, the commemoration of Anzac Day. I say this as Anzac Day epitomises the true Australian spirit, the sacrifices of those gone before us in securing our ability to live as we do now, in this hard-fought country, with hard-fought freedoms.

Anzac Day traditions will be honoured in Forbes. Meet at 5am at Club Forbes for the dawn march and service at the Victoria Park Cenotaph. The mid-morning march will assemble at Cross Street at 10am, and the commemoration will follow at 11am at the Cenotaph. Lest We Forget.

I want to bring to your attention free one-on-one sessions with Council’s planning department for those navigating the rebuilding process after last year’s unprecedented and extensive flooding. It can be hard to know what to do but these sessions will provide tailored and specific advice on navigating the planning approval process or the NSW Planning Portal.

The Forbes session was held earlier this week but appointments can be made on request. For those in the Wirrinya/Garema and Bedgerebong areas, sessions are being held next week and can be booked through 123tix.com.au or alternatively, via an appointment made through Council on 6850 2300.

Finally we hope to see plenty of local and regional guests at the Australian Local Government Womens’ Association Conference in Forbes starting Thursday.

Enjoy the remainder of the week and God bless.

Phyllis Miller OAM

What does Anzac Day mean to you?

April 21, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Geoffrey Suttie: My partner heads to the dawn service each year. I hope people understand it’s not just a holiday, it’s a remembrance day

Shaun Lawler: It’s very symbolic, and all about honoring the servicemen. I hope to see the younger generation carry on the tradition of the day

Aleisha Batterhm: My dad served in the Navy, so we always honour those who served, and my mums birthday is also on Anzac Day.

Pauline Cracknell: Thinking about the poor soldiers who died to defend our country, I hope the young ones understand what it is all about.

Lorraine Nelson: It is good that we have a day dedicated to remembering the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives.
