Forbes Shire Council has received $2 million from the NSW Government under the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program to rollout planning undertaken for the Lake Forbes Activation Plan.

Mayoral Notes

June 2, 2023 by Roxane Manley

I received some exciting news this week from our marvelous volunteers that the museum should be throwing its doors back open to the general public in the middle of this month after painstaking hours spent restoring the multitudes of historical relics. It has been a mammoth job; the floodwaters that came through the building have left their mark, and it is poignant now that these marks themselves have become a part of history. We just cannot thank the many museum volunteers enough for their tireless dedication.

I have to take my hat off to the fabulous staff at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange who on Tuesday raised around $1,500 for the Cancer Council from donations and breakfast sales. As CWLE Manager Cassi Walmsley said, we have all been touched in some form by this disease. It also warms the heart to see a pen of 300 donated sheep auctioned off on the day to raise much funds for a young Tullamore wife, mum and teacher who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The sheep fetched $180/head. Bless all who supported both of these events.

I was in Sydney earlier this week at a tourism conference. The value of the tourism industry to regional areas such as ours can never be underestimated. There is always so much to learn, to share and new ideas to develop. As I love to say, we are proud of our town, and we love bringing in visitors to show off our amazing way of life.

Till next week, God bless, and enjoy your weekend.

WNSWLHD Launches Second Reconciliation Action Plan

June 2, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) has demonstrated their commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Western NSW with the launch of its second Reconciliation Action Plan.

“Our District is so diverse in geography, communities and culture – our communities are unique in so many ways, and each has a strong sense of local identity,” Mr Spittal said.

“In 2017, Western NSW was the first Local Health District to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan, and we are proud to now launch our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2023-2025, which has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

“This Plan is an opportunity to reflect on our approach to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the journey we are on, and the next steps we will take together to make substantial improvement in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

WNSWLHD Executive Director Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing, Tony Martin, said it is an important step in addressing the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the District.

“We recognise that our journey towards reconciliation is a long-term commitment and requires concerted and cohesive action. This new Reconciliation Action Plan is supported by an implementation plan, which includes a detailed breakdown of actions and milestones we will achieve in our two-year timeframe,” Mr Martin said.

Forbes Garden Club Enjoy Trip To Dubbo

June 2, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Some members of the Parkes Garden Club joined the coach trip, looking forward to a pleasant day out in the glorious autumn weather

The Forbes Garden Club members and friends enjoyed an entertaining coach trip to Dubbo recently on the invitation from the Dubbo Garden Club to view three gardens

Our first garden to visit was at the home of Rosalie Peppermann and a delightful Devonshire morning tea was served. Her garden featured many hedges expertly trimmed with borders of coloured plants seen from the verge and beautiful pots of flowering geraniums.

Our next garden at the home of Narelle Stonestreet was situated in natural bushland with a modern home built with timber and iron features wonderfully designed. Her garden of native plants and succulents with stone paths leading to outdoor areas was just delightful! She and her husband have worked hard to maintain their lovely home.

The third garden visit was the home of Fay Woods a large area with tennis court, swimming pool and spacious garden of shrubs trees and flowers. We were joined by their garden club members with tables and chairs set on the lawns for our lunch. Soup was served, also quiches, salads and slices. A walk around the garden saw many hours of love and care to create this lovely garden.

Our President Elvy Quirk thanked the hosts for a wonderful lunch and day out. Upon leaving Dubbo, a stop was made to view the Waste to Art exhibition at a local gallery.

Missing Pioneers – Is Your Family Represented?

June 2, 2023 by Roxane Manley

Family Members at the unveiling of a new plaque, could your family be the next one to add to the collection?

If your family was living in the Canowindra district before 1901 and are not remembered on the Pioneers’ Wall at the Canowindra museum, we would like to hear from you. Indeed, you may wish to add your family plaque.

The Canowindra Historical Society and Museum intends to unveil new plaques at its Open Day during the October long weekend. The Society President, Dr Jennifer Wythes, said “There is ample space on the wall for additional plaques and we would welcome more pioneer families.”

If you are interested, please contact the museum at canowindrahistorical@gmail.com, for details as soon as possible, with final details before COB Monday, 19th June.

The Historical Society would need to know who in your family first came to the district, when and where from. Most plaques also give brief details of the pioneer’s occupation, their children and sometimes a few words on their life here, for example, business or property names.

Already, the Wiradjuri people and 107 settler families are represented. The family of Matthew Thomas and Willena Dwyer added their plaque only last month.

The pioneers’ wall was erected in 2001 as part of the Bicentenary celebrations. It honours the families residing here before Federation in 1901 and so records their connections to today’s citizens.

“It is remarkable how often the Society is contacted by people seeking information on family history”, said Dr Wythes.

“We really appreciate receiving information about our local pioneers and their descendants.”

The early European settlers came mainly from England, Ireland or Scotland – both as free migrants and ex-convicts, or their descendants. Some were from more distant parts of the world.
