Finns Store a New Beginning

13 years ago Jackie and Geoff Yeo the owners and restorers of Finns Store Canowindra embarked on a folly which turned into a love of Canowindra and country. It was 2010 NSW was gripped in drought, Canowindra was struggling, the main street was desolate having seen better days. Knowing that drought always breaks and though there being little optimism they could see the enormous potential of the region, the town, the bendy main street and most of all the grand old lady “Finns”. Purchasing and restoring the old building whilst pioneering the new retail concept mixing wine, food, coffee, art, clothing, jewellery, furniture and giftware the store quickly became unmatched in the central west. Other businesses in the main street quickly followed suit, and new retail and cafe businesses opened.

It is with a heavy heart Jackie and Geoff have announced that the building and business is for sale either as a going concern or vacant possession. Jackie, still full of vitality, has a new passion: Grandchildren.

Geoffrey wants to spend more time on his bike and more time managing the burgeoning legal practice Peacockes Solicitors.

For the month of November the store will be conducting a progressive closing down sale with plenty of bargains to be had culminating with a Clearing Sale and Auction conducted by Elders Emms Mooney Saturday 2nd December.

Call in to wish Jackie and Geoff all the best, grab a bargain, have one of those amazing iced chocolates or spiders, a coffee from the latte lawyer, or experience the warm and quirky ambience of the store one more time.

Forbes Christmas Promotion And Christmas Carnival Will Bring Fun, Laughter And Happiness To All

The Trees are out. Each participating business will have a wonderful timberChristmas Tree out the front of their business or close to their front door.

Aaron Acheson said “We are so pleased to be able to offer $20,000 in prizes this year. It has been a tough year so the Forbes Business Chamber is delighted to have kept the draws to encourage local shopping”.

The draws began on November 13th.“All you need to do is scan the QR Code in store and fill in the details. If you don’t have a phone each store will have a manual sheet. We want to make sure that everyone has a fair turn,” said Aaron Acheson. $500 draws will be held on Thursday afternoons on the 16, 23 and 30th November, 7, 14 and 21 December. 5 x $500 draws will take place at the AMAZING Forbes Christmas Carnival on the 8 December. The remaining draws for the 23 December are 6 x $500, 1 x $1500, 2 x $2500 and 1 x $5000 giving a total funding pool of $20000.

Last week was a week to pause and remember. Forbes marked the anniversary of the armistice of World War I – something history should never forget, with a small ceremony and the minute’s silence to remember the sacrifices in the past and of those who are still serving their country.

We also remember the horrific floods of last year, and the terrifying inland tsunami that hit Eugowra and days later ravaged an already flooded Forbes. Two lives were lost, hundreds of homes and businesses, livestock and people in both towns are still living with the fallout – so many in pods still waiting for their homes to be rebuilt. To the people of Forbes and Eugowra, our hearts are always with you. There was a great flurry of activity this week in the Harold Street car park next to the former church as an established palm tree was removed and replanted in the new Goldridge Estate – a new home just like you could have in the beautiful new estate! Council and local contractors worked on removing the tree – which I believe weighed around 9 tonne give or take a tonne.

It is another big couple of weeks politically and locally. I have been in Sydney for the Local Government NSW annual conference (131 motions have been listed for debate covering almost 300 issues – including the housing crisis forum) and on Tuesday Parliamentary Secretary Janelle Saffin visited Forbes and spoke with support agencies to help develop a plan for the distribution of the $100m of flood support funding package.

It was our monthly Council meeting today Thursday 16 November and Reading Down Town Day tomorrow (Friday 17 November) – the power of the written word on minds of all ages, especially in building the blocks of our young ones, should never be underestimated. Forbes celebrates 70 years of Meals on Wheels on 23 November, such a wonderful service for the community – just imagine how many hot and nutritious dinners have been delivered over those seven decades! The Forbes Domestic and Family Violence Committee will host White Ribbon Day at Forbes’ Lions Park on 24 November – march around the lake, listen to guest speakers, sign the pledge, enjoy a free lunch and support services. Local Artist Sean Cassidy Digs Art

Local artist Sean James Cassidy has received an outstanding recognition by being invited to join the Australian Watercolour Institute (AWi). His nomination and subsequent induction, was a unanimous decision by the Institute based on the quality of his work.

At the AWi’s recent exhibition, Brushes with History, held at Lion’s Gate Lodge at the Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney, Sean submitted a painting titled Melodies of Woven Light which he was delighted to sell. This art work and the materials used to create it were entirely made by Sean. The paper was handmade from a variety of recycled products and included wood powder from the Paperbark tree. Kangaroo fur from the local area was also incorporated to strengthen the paper and to include some DNA from the Central West.

Sean used three colours in his work and made each of them. One colour was created from beetroot juice, purple carrot juice and red wine and produced a paint throwing hues of magenta, amethyst and lilac. The yellow was made by crushing local ochre rock and adding turmeric. The white was also a crushed local rock. The binder used to set the colour to the paper was a mixture of Cootamundra Wattle sap, homemade vinegar and locally-sourced honey. This latest recognition for Sean has come after a recent cultural exchange with the Archaeology Faculty at the University of The Philippines. He was hosted by Alfred Galvez, a friend with whom Sean set up an art school and while Sean is no longer an owner, the school Galvez Atelier is flourishing and has connections with both the New York and Florence Art Academies. Sean is very proud of Alfred’s achievements and his philosophy of offering opportunities in art across all socio-economic groups.

During his visit, Sean was invited to view museums and galleries, in the process of being built, to house the country’s important archaeological collections from Colonial and Pre-colonial history and to speak on the article co-written with Kerrie Peden, Excavating Bridges for Future Streams.

Based on Sean’s previous contributions to exhibitions at the university, he was invited to study an intensive course in understanding the discipline of archaeology, to participate in skill sharing with doctoral student Mr Timothy James Vitales and to accompany a group of archaeologists on two expeditions.

He was also asked to conceptualise an exhibition based on the expeditions’ findings, in collaboration with the National Museum of The Philippines and National Geographic. This project, Puliran, is to examine an ancient copper tablet discovered near Laguna Lake in the southern Luzon region. The tablet is covered in an unknown text and archaeologists plan to begin another dig in the area in an attempt to discover further clues to the tablet’s origin and the people who created it. Sean has also been asked to create programs in 2024 to help build ties between the local community and the archaeologists.

In the future, Sean will be using the knowledge gained to explore his Celtic history through its patterns and iconography. He intends to study in Northern Ireland while researching his convict ancestry and plans to have his findings complete in time for the International Cassidy reunion in Enniskillen in 2025.

Putting Key to Success

IMAGE: Kailab Tyne used his in-form putting to claim the ‘Medal of Medallist’ trophy. His 69 nett was the second best score of the day, and one shot clear of two other ‘MoM’ contenders.

The Forbes golfers found the conditions hot but matched it with hot putting to bring success in the weekend golf.

Saturday had an Individual Stroke event, sponsored by Loomzy’s Fish n Fix, which also served to crown the ‘Medal of Medallist’ for the year. More than 20 of the winning Medallists were in the field of 58, aiming to gain both Daily comp and

Medallist accolades.

For the Daily Comp, Div 1 was won by Doug Churchill with 66 nett. His putting left scorch marks on the greens. Runner-up was Niel Duncan with 70 nett, and who just missed out on the ‘MoM’ trophy.

The Div-2 was won by Kailab Tyne, bring his second prize for the day. He also had great success with the putter. Runner-up was Fons Melisi, 70 nett, who also just missed the ‘MoM’.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back. The NTP’s went to: 9 th – Caleb

Hanrahan; 18th – Mick Livingston.

The 3rd Hole Superpin went to Mark Watts. On a gusty wind-affected day he was pleased to find the green, let alone get to 2.46 metres. It was good enough though.

There were too few to run a Sunday Stableford Medley comp. But a Junior who did play was pleased to have beaten his Dad, even if it was only on one hole.

This weekend will be a 4BBB on Saturday and the Forbes Nissan Classic on Sunday.

Khub Forbes have Launched their annual Kmart wishing tree appeal in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Many families are doing it tough – which is why we’re asking our community to come together and support those who need it most.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is Australia’s largest and longest-running gift collection drive. It has been helping assist those in need in local communities at Christmas and beyond for over 30 years. Working with the Salvation Army, and with the generous support of our customers, Kmart have donated over $5.6 million and 10 million in gifts distributed to those in need at Christmas. There are six wishing tree champions in every Kmart store – that is over 1300 team members that are dedicated to helping support local communities.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal supports children, adults, seniors and families who are unable to afford gifts at Christmas and beyond Christmas.

With more than 760,000 children currently living in poverty, Kmart alongside The Salvation Army are working together to give hope to Australians who may be struggling with homelessness, illness or family crisis.

Kmart along with The Salvation Army are coming together for the 36th year to help support those doing it tough. We encourage you to embrace the spirit of giving this year by supporting the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, by making a cash contribution in store, or online, or giving a gift in store. The Appeal runs from 13- 24 December 2023.
