Local Blokes Loving Life

July 23, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

House with no steps

The Men’s Shed is a local committee of the Forbes men who get together from 9am to 12pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and they are always looking for new members – ‘the more the merrier’. “We believe in mateship, helping the community and a good cuppa for morning tea” said President Norm Haley.

At the moment the men are working on restoring furniture that the people of Forbes have kindly donated to the shed, including chairs, cabinets and a large garden setting and any leftovers or scrap is being recycled and used as kindling which the men sell for $6 a bag, which has been quite handy in this weather of late.

The committee has been lucky enough to have signed a running two year contract with the Honey Bee Factory, making wood box presentation packages, which look incredible! “We make 200 boxes per month, and 250 of our packages have recently been sent all over the world, that’s very exciting” said Norm. “We are organising guests such as health and lifestyle speakers to come along and talk Local Blokes Loving Life to us, as we like to get one per month. Last month was Australian Hearing and some of us ended up with hearing aids by the end of the day”.

Fundraising is a massive part of what the blokes at The Men’s Shed do. If you would like to help out, the men are running a 100 Club with tickets being sold at Bernardi’s IGA and Woolworths. A garage sale will take place this weekend at the Showground, starting at 9am and a sausage sizzle will also be on offer. There will also be a sausage sizzle held at Bunnings in August, September and October but the dates have not yet been confirmed.

All the fundraising and donations are going towards deserving charities close to the men’s heart as well as their organisation to help them achieve their goals. “We wish to build our own shed someday in the future”. Anyone wishing to join can simply turn up. Alternatively, please contact the Men’s Shed President Norm Haley on 0428 638 665 or Secretary Leo Butler on 0415 180 059.

What does it take to get kids reading these days?

July 23, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Earn_and_Learn_Logo

“Once upon a time….”Are they not the most glorious words in the English language? And how much time, do we as parents spend reading with our children? It is just so important.

A headmaster was heard telling someone at a local school, “Far too often, parents tell me their child is ‘not a reader’. But that’s a copout. It’s a kid’s job to read and a parent’s job to persist for as long as it takes.” The key is to regard reading as a delight rather than a duty. Start early with your children and be theatrical when you read out
loud to your children (and grandchildren). Be animated and alive, however most importantly, be present. If you’re not interested and you don’t sound like you care whether Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy gets frightened by Scarface Claw or not, your child will know the difference.

Some children want to read the same book over and over again, then great let them do this. A lifelong relationship with a story is a lovely thing. For those long trips, audio books are marvellous. Remember a trip to the local library can be a weekly occurrence to choose a new book and audio.

So I would like to challenge all the mums and dads, and the grandparents, to take the time to read with your children and grandchildren and take yourself back to your childhood. Let us know what books your children like and how much time you spend with them reading. If you are part of a children’s reading group then perhaps you would like to share the details. Send us your story and the best story wins a voucher from Woolworths to the value of $50.

Woolworths is once again proud to be supporting education for Australian kids. Earn & Learn is back for 2015 and will offer early learning centres, primary schools and secondary schools the opportunity to benefit again, until September 8. Details of how to participate are available in stores and sticker sheets can be dropped into a collection box at your school or local store.

The Forbes Platypi went up against the Bathurst Bulldogs on July 18. The First Grade team lost to the Bulldogs with a score of 29-10. The Second Grade team also went down 50-0 in a disappointing weekend for the Forbes side.

The League Tag team had a tight match, but won the day with a score of 14-12. The Reserves won their game with a score of 44-14 and the Under 18s team had a bye.

Rain Causes Cancellations But Doesn’t Dampen Spirits

July 23, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

The rain was welcome by many, but was not so enjoyable for the golfers at Forbes. Very wet conditions before the weekend caused the cancellation of Saturday competition golf, but a sunny Saturday afternoon enabled some play on Sunday. On Saturday it was quite disturbing to see golfers yelling “I want to play” being dragged off the course, but they were very keen. I am careful to add that no children or animals were harmed during those events. The scene
across the course was one of casual water in many places and a very soggy ground. Best to wait until it improved.

Saturday’s competition was to be the first round of the Mens Foursomes Championships. These will now be held on 29-30 August, replacing a stroke competition. This may not suit all, but with other commitments this is the next available weekend. Sunday’s 18 hole Stableford Medley was like a godsend to those who need their weekly dose. A field of 35 players was a testament to the desire by all to enjoy some wonderful balmy conditions. The winner on the day was Steve Uphill, with 40 points, on count back from Laurie O’Connor (40). It was interesting that groups in which these front runners played had difficulty in identifying their own ball.

The Ball sweep went to 35 points and included: 39 – A Dukes, B Carpenter, 37 – B Webb, 36 – P Dawson, 35 – B Shine, P Maher, P Nixon. Yep, it was certainly a day for the big hitters!

The NTP’s went to – 9th: P Grayson, 18th: R Williams. There were only two 2’s, one on the 3rd and one on the 18th. I presume that despite the sun the air was pretty heavy and there was very little run, thus making it difficult to judge the correct shot. Any excuse to help out a golfer.

This week the schedule is for a 12-hole event at Parkes, on July 23. It is the usual gathering at 12:30 am for a 1:00 pm start. Bring your snorkel and flippers, just in case. In November Forbes GC holds the Nissan Classic weekend, with this year being the 25th staging of this event. This has become a primary calendar event, with many players
from a range of clubs stencilling this into the diaries. To ensure continued success we need to have a vibrant Committee.

The Classic organisers have scheduled an open meeting to garner support to organise this event. The meeting will be held on Thursday 30 July at the Sportsman’s Hotel, commencing at 6 pm. If anybody is interested in helping out, or just interested to find out more, please attend the meeting. Our golfer’s ability spreads far and wide.

Not only does King John ply his golf skills in Pennants in Sydney, but other members cast a shining beacon wherever they go. Sue Shine recently had some time at Port Stephens, and enjoyed some golf. Every course Sue played she easily scored 35 points or more. Such versatility and consistency was marvellous. In order to keep up, Barry Shine had to do something spectacular, as his golf was pretty ordinary. And that he did – he scored a Hole-in-One at the Palms course. It was a classic controlled shot against the breeze, always on target, and judged to perfection. Forbes players shine again.

It’s crystal ball time: Saturday 25 July is the 4BBB Stableford Multiplier, sponsored by Ace Machining. Choose a steady partner with plenty of patience as this could be quite traumatic. In fact it would be ‘real ace’ to score points on
every hole. Sunday 26 July is the Stableford Medley.

What a difference a good cup of coffee makes

July 23, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

As part of an initiative of the Forbes Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber invites local businesses to portray their business, their challenges and what their plans are for the future. This week it was Linda Rees turn from Esme’s Coffee Shop which she has owned for 15 years after purchasing it from the Curry’s in November 2000.

Linda said she “thought it would be an easy job”. It has turned out to be very labour intensive, and particularly with her food, as everything is home cooked. She concentrates on ‘plain’ home-cooked food and admits they do very well with this type of food. It is particularly appreciated by the older clientele who visit regularly. The biggest change in her business has been the uptake in coffee sales. When Linda changed her brand of coffee to Bills Beans she saw an immediate rise of approximately 25% in sales. Esme’s is the fastest growing coffee reseller of Bills Beans in the Central West. Bills Beans would only allow her to sell their coffee if she agreed to make it the way that they wanted her to make it, as they didn’t want people having coffee served which wasn’t up to their standard. And it has
obviously worked for her with sales improving each month.

“One of my main challenges, as I am sure is the same with most businesses is finding, training and keeping the right staff. A surprising number of people, either through absent-mindedness or some other motive, also simply forget to pay. We have put in new technology and this is helping us streamline how we operate.” If you are looking to take over a great business in Forbes, this business is up for sale, but if you are simply looking for a great cup
of coffee then head to Esme’s.

Schools Celebrate Local Heroes

Between Monday 27 and Friday 31 July, Education Week is a major event on the NSW public schools calendar and this year the theme is ‘Celebrating Local Heroes’. During Education Week, schools and learning facilities across the state organise and take part in a range of activities including performances, exhibitions, competitions and sports events.

“Education Week is a time to celebrate the achievements and successes of our students, teachers and support staff across all NSW public schools,” says NSW Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli. Several special events have been planned in conjunction with Education Week to highlight the quality programs available at Forbes North Public School.

Forbes North are inviting all parents, carers and family members to visit the classrooms on Tuesday 28 July to see first-hand the quality learning undertaken each and every day. Classrooms will be open from 11:50am until
12:30pm. Afterwards, a special Education Week assembly will be held in the school hall which will include performances by the school choir and the presentation of Bronze I-Con Certificates to the children who have
earned these this year.

Everyone is then invited to enjoy a community sausage sizzle lunch prepared by staff from Forbes North’s Community Business Partners Ray White Rural. Traditional Education Week church services will be held on Wednesday at Northside Chapel and on Thursday there will be a disco in the school hall for Forbes North students from 5pm to 6:30pm.

Also as part of the Education Week activities, students from Forbes High School’s Creative and Performing Arts classes will visit Forbes North on Friday July 31 to present a concert to all students from K-6. At Forbes Public School, students learn in a stimulating and challenging environment with a 21st century approach to schooling.

To celebrate Education Week, the school has organised many activities including an Open Day at Forbes Public School on Monday July 27 between 10:15 and 11am, as well as a Book Fair in the school library from 8:30am to 3:30pm. A community morning tea will be served in the nature area from 11am to 11:30am.

The Forbes Preschool Kindergarten welcome everyone for their individuality, for their ideas and their contributions, believing that for children, Preschool is about fun, love, laughter, friends, learning, exploring and excitement. Every child deserves a beautiful start to a life of education and the staff at Forbes Preschool are proud of what they do showing pride in their roles. For parents and families the Preschool is a comfortable place that they can visit anytime and feel a sense of belonging and pride. They offer a range of resources including traditional, symbolic and
sensory play.
