A Dream Come True

July 30, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Preschool Kindergarten has been established for 58 years with a community based philosophy meaning that parents and families of the children can visit and get involved in the organisation. While the memories and legacy of this preschool are held close to the hearts of generations of Forbes residents, the waiting list is long and the staff are keen to move on to their new facility. “It’s been 58 long years here, but it isn’t quite big enough,” said Amy Shine, who has been the Director of this centre for the past five years, and has been working in childcare for far longer.

“The new pre-school is our dream come true; a purpose built centre for lots of children,” Amy said. “We are really happy with the design.” The new Preschool will be energy efficient, cost effective, flushed with natural light and
will increase their capacity from 39 kids per day to 75 kids per day. Children at the new Preschool will have access to speech and occupational therapists as well as other specialists who work closely with children.

There will be a community play and learn space for the children where children can explore socially and educationally. “We have a strong link with schools rated as exceeding in all areas of the Australian National Qualifications Framework,” Amy said. The Preschool children go on excursions to local schools and other schools visit the Preschool giving the kids a broad social experience. “It’s very exciting,” said Amy, “it’s going to be huge. We visit the new centre regularly with the kids. We’re hoping to move in early next year.”

“The local Council have been super supportive of us and without them, the vision of this new Preschool would not have come to fruition,” Amy said. “Mayor Phyllis Miller has been integral at every step of the way.”

The Forbes Platypi had a disappointing round of football last weekend against the Orange Emus. After travelling to Orange, the first grade team went down to the Emus 71-7, the second grade team lost with a score of 28-7 and the Colts struggled against the Orange to walk away with a score of 99-3 in Orange’s favour. The teams all battled hard on the day. Better luck next weekend boys.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

July 30, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

The fog and drizzle didn’t dampen the spirit of NAIDOC Week Celebrations at Forbes High School last week where Indigenous culture and identity was celebrated through music, dance and awards. Blake, Tai and Warren Baxter opened the event with a traditional smoking ceremony and didgeridoo performance, followed by Welcome to Country and then comments from Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller.

“It is important to remember that NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by all Australians from all walks of life,” Cr Miller said. “Forbes Shire Council would like to recognise the outstanding contributions that Aboriginal Australians make to improve the lives of Aboriginal people in our community, or to promote Aboriginal issues through our local NAIDOC Awards.”

Paige Thomas, Warren Baxter and Tai Baxter were each presented with the 2015 Aboriginal Youth of the Year Award. Each recipient was commended for their efforts and achievements in sports and academics. “All three of these young people regularly volunteer and contribute to community events with dance and other cultural presentations,” Cr Miller said. The 2015 Aboriginal Person of the Year was awarded to David Acheson for his key role in the foundation and development of Forbes Aboriginal and Community Working Party, and for his participation with the wider Aboriginal community.

After a traditional dance performance from Red Bend Catholic College dancers, the Forbes High School band, House of Tribes performed, followed by a lifting performance from Orange outfit PreDestined, which had some students and the Mayor getting out of their chairs to dance.

Club Celebrates Years Friendship

July 30, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

The 2015 Forbes Cup sees the Forbes Jockey Club celebrate the 20 anniversary of a special partnership between a bush race club and city racing enthusiasts. Twenty years ago a small contingent of members from the Bankstown Sports Club attended the Forbes Cup. Two decades later attendees from the Bankstown Sports Club form the backbone of the meeting, providing welcome numbers through the gates along with assistance with the sponsorship and the logistics of the meeting. Approximately 200 members of the club are set to invade the small town of Forbes for the relaxed atmosphere and country hospitality.

“The Forbes Jockey Club is extremely excited to be celebrating our 20 year partnership with the Bankstown Sports Club,” said the Secretary of the Forbes Jockey Club Blake Nicholson. “They’ve been coming for over twenty years and really have made a massive contribution to the success of our meeting. More than that, we’ve formed many strong friendships with our mates from Bankstown.”

The 2014 edition of the Forbes Cup saw the Gino D’Altorio trained Sonro lump a massive 61 kilograms to claim the $25,000 cheque. The meeting attracted entries from Moruya, Griffith, Dubbo, Queanbeyan and Hawkesbury. Organisers are confident of similarly strong fields for this year’s edition. As part of the celebrations the Carlton and United Breweries Clydesdales will be in attendance for the meeting along with Member for Orange Andrew Gee. The committee has invited Racing Minister Troy Grant and are confident of his attendance.

The Calcutta held the evening before the races always proves a highlight and has become one of the largest in country NSW.

Lending A Helping Hand

Ray White Rural

Ian Simpson of Ray White Rural said he always wanted to get involved in the town and help the community further and he is doing just that. “Our aim is to support the needs of kids, families and the community,” Ian said.

“We are volunteering to help out with everything, from reading to kids, to helping out with major fundraising projects. The company will be contributing to programs, being a part of them instead of just writing a cheque,” Ian said. This week the team from Ray White Rural helped put on a BBQ for Education Week at Forbes North Public School. The boys cooked five hundred sausages and the women buttered hundreds of bread slices. The school is currently working on a beautification project which includes creating an all new front yard for the school. A new disabled ramp has also been installed, an important feature the school never had before.

Ray White Rural has acquired two vintage bicycles; one will be raffled to raise funds for Forbes North and the other will be first prize in a colouring competition for Kinder to Year 2 children in the wider communities.

Tough Match for Magpies

July 30, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

IMG_8609

In a disappointing turn for local football fans, the Forbes Magpies have slipped to fourth place on the Group 11 Rugby League Ladder following a 32-26 loss to the Wellington Cowboys last weekend. In their earlier games, the Magpies had proved unbeatable. They had convincing wins in the women’s League Tag tournament, and the Under 18s and Reserve grades are sitting pretty in first place on the ladder with only two rounds remaining before the semi-finals begin.

Unfortunately, the Magpies’ First Grade team were forced to work much harder in their match s the game was a crucial “mustwin” tournament for both teams who were jostling for third position on the ladder. Running out to the tough Kennard Park crowd, the Cowboys took the leader quite early, crossing over with a quick succession of tries.
The Magpies were not to be deterred though, and their forwards pack led the charge back up through the middle of the paddock with the strong forwards pack gaining much needed distance for the Forbes team. This gave Ethan Gaffney the chance to get some points on the board for the Magpies.

The momentum swung the Magpies way with Rusiate Luwanikula crossing out wide. But it wasn’t quite enough with the Cowboys so thirsty for the win. The contest was tough and there was plenty on the line; out came the hard hits and the ugly niggles. The contest in the ruck resulted in a blow for Forbes with Zac Merritt sent off the field
for 10 after a contentious tackle. The Magpies were a man down and Wellington took the advantage. The Cowboys were able to score another two tries before the half-time siren sounded, taking them into the break with a 12 point lead.

The Magpies were desperate to get back into the game as they returned from the sheds after the break, sending Jake Grace, Joel Davie and Ben Robinson all over for tries. Hooker Hayden Bolam was successful in converting three of the five opportunities but fate was already sealed, with the Cowboys walking away with the win. The final score of
the game was 32-26.

This weekend the Magpies are looking to take back the two points they’ve just lost by heading to Caltex Oval in Dubbo to take on the 7th placed Dubbo Macquarie Raiders. This will be another very important game for
the Forbes side if they are hoping to remain in the top four teams in the competition.

The Raiders were unable to field a League Tag side so the first fixture of the day will be the Under 18s team, kicking off at 11:30am. On the following weekend, the Magpies will host the Parkes Spacemen at Spooners Oval in a much anticipated local derby. Get out there and show your support for
the team.

Question of The Week

What do you think about NSW Premier Mike Baird’s proposed increase to the GST?

“It shouldn’t be on. We don’t need it and it would just inflate the price of things.” – Peter Hayley

IMG_1154

“It’s inevitable that we’ll get some increase in GST. 12.5% is possibly acceptable, let’s hope the State Government puts that money back into health and education.” – Marg Duggan

Woolworth’s popular Earn & Learn campaign is back, giving everybody the chance to contribute some amazing new educational equipment to schools and early learning centres across Australia.

Country towns like Forbes really benefit from these kinds of programs and they give locals the chance to think about education in the community and contribute to the skill growth of children. The last program reached 14,500 schools
and early learning centres, enabling them access to a whole new range of educational equipment.

Anybody who shops with Woolworths can take part because every $10 you spend there will earn you 1 Earn & Learn Sticker. Instead of throwing them in the bin or simply not accepting them at the checkout, stick them to a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. These are available at any Woolworths store and at your local schools as well as online at www.woolworths.com.au.

Once your Sticker Sheet is full, simply put it into a collection box at your local school or at Woolworths. That’s all it takes to contribute, so start collecting today and support your local schools!

Country Bakehouse Earning a Crust

July 30, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

bakehouse

The Forbes Country Bakehouse formed in June 1990 as a family business, starting out with a single baker and four day staff. In less than two years Kerrie had taken over, raising three girls – Amity, Giselle and Olivia – and running a successful business. You might call her a modern-day super woman.

25 years on, the team has grown to 4 bakers and 17 day staff. They now do large deliveries to other stores and businesses in the region showing how popular their menu has grown.

“I have watched so many different generations of families grow into the people they are today,” says Kerrie. “Different travellers that pass through the same time every year; you know you’re doing it right if you have people always coming back.” “We love to support the local community. We have pie drive fundraisers, savoury and
sweet, for clubs, committees, schools and sporting groups. Pie drives go from Forbes to Canowindra to Tullamore and everywhere in between.”

Over the years The Bakehouse has grown and expanded with Xtension, serving hot and cold drinks, pies, cakes and breads baked fresh daily. There is a full salad bar for your sandwiches and rolls, cooked meals like melts, delicious spuds, hotdogs, gourmet burgers, schnitzels and more. “All ingredients and products are sourced locally or handmade by us,” says Giselle, “support locals to feed locals.”

Their space caters for everyone, including a kids corner and their “read and relax” section where a gold donation is all it costs to borrow a book. Alternatively, customers are welcome to simply stop in for a coffee and a little bit of reading. Open from 6am to 5:30pm weekdays, and 6am to 12:30pm on Saturdays, don’t forget to pre-order your Friday sushi by Thursday. The Bakehouse is one of the fantastic nooks in Forbes to check out.
