The 2015 National BBQ Championships are happening this weekend and Forbes BBQ Society are excited to announce that local folk indie band House of Tribes will be performing on stage.

Forbes BBQ Society President Chris Roylance said that having House of Tribes on board along with well-known Eugowra local, Cath Adams, the BBQ Championships are set to draw in crowds with such a great line-up. House of Tribes are a local band that have played gigs right across the Central West having their songs played on radio station Triple J and recently launching their first album ‘Paint it Red’.

The local four-piece band formed at the Kalari-Lachlan River Arts Festival in 2013 and since then have played at events in Forbes, Young, Orange, Grenfell and Condobolin. Chris Roylance said that preparations are in full swing with lots to do for everyone. “We also have a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, great food options including tasting plates to sample.”

“Between Relay for Life and the BBQ Championships we are expecting over 2,000 people throughout the day. We are really looking forward to the atmosphere,” said Chris. Along with Fast Ed who will be conducting cooking demonstrations throughout the afternoon, the 2015 BBQ Championships are looking to be the biggest and best yet.

Having joined forces with Relay for life the two events are being held at South Circle Forbes on Saturday 17 October.

New Hospital

October 15, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Hundreds of people attended the public open day at Forbes Hospital’s new facility on the weekend, allowing them to preview the structure which is part of a $40.9 million redevelopment. Before the open day community tours began, a traditional Indigenous smoking ceremony was conducted by Ralph Naden, followed by a Welcome to Country performance led by Aileen Allen.

“The community tours provided a unique opportunity to look inside the contemporary and spacious new building before staff and patients move in,” said Member for Orange Andrew Gee.

“It’s great that so many locals took the opportunity to look through our fabulous new facility. Feedback has been incredibly positive.” The new building at Forbes Hospital features an emergency department, an inpatient unit,
birthing suites for maternity services and clinical support services, including medical imaging. The $113.7 million Lachlan Health Service Project is funded by the NSW Government and includes both the planning and capital
components for the Forbes and Parkes hospital redevelopments.

The Lachlan Health Service project is scheduled for completion in early 2016.

Taste of Italia

October 15, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Caterina and her husband Vittorio Murda have opened their new restaurant/café next door to Spotlight and they are ready for business! Both Caterina and Vittorio were born in the south of Italy and it is this cuisine which features heavily in their meals.

Café Aglio and Olio, (garlic and oil) features food containing garlic, oil, basil, chillies and the staple red sauce Napoletana. The Murdas moved to Forbes from Western Sydney where they ran two Italian restaurants to be closer to their family this year. They saw the opportunity to return to Forbes as there was an opening in the market and all
the family could help out.

Opening at 7:30 during the week for great coffee, sandwiches, focaccias, and homemade cakes. In the evenings it is a true restaurant with traditional pastas and pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven. The pizza menu has traditional favourites with gourmet pizzas in the mix like Contadina, a “farmers pizza” with vegetables including eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and roasted pumpkin.

There is also Marinara and Calzone which has ricotta, mushrooms, ham and olives. For the sweet tooth, there is a Nutella pizza on the menu with strawberries and bananas. If you don’t have plans for dinner tonight, drop into Café Aglio and Olio and give Caterina and Vittorio a warm Forbes welcome!

Sculpture Prize Winner Revealed

October 8, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

front page

It was a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere at this year’s unveiling of the Sculpture Forbes 2015 Acquisition Prize on Thursday 1 October at Albion Park. Over 400 people turned out to see the sculptures entered into this year’s prize from artists all over the country including Melbourne, Sydney and the greater Central West region.

A number of sculptures were unveiled on Thursday evening but there could only be one winner for the $20,000 Acquisition Prize and that was Harrie Fasher whose self-portrait sculpture named “Bird and I” impressed judge
Alan Somerville, a celebrated sculpture artist. Harrie’s sculpture, depicting a horse with a bird, references her passion for horses and her experiences as an accomplished equestrian athlete, as well as describing how she perceives herself in that context.

Her artworks explore the horse and its relationships to humans on a physical, historical and mythological level. Harrie has exhibited both nationally and internationally with works shown at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, Sydney’s Sculpture by the Sea, the Baer Art Centre in Iceland and London’s Mall Galleries. Wayne Richards, Sculpture Forbes co-ordinator and Forbes Services Memorial Club President said the quality of work this year is impressive.

The objective of the competition is to provide a platform for a sculptor to display their artistic endeavours as well as to bring tourists and locals into the main shopping centre of Forbes to view the sculptures.

Now is the Time for Fly Control

October 8, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

With the wet weather last month, coupled with the start of spring’s warmer weather, now is time to be on the front foot for fly control in your sheep. Blowfly strike is considered to be one of the major problems confronting the Australian wool industry, with annual losses to the value of $150 million. Although management practices such as mulesing, crutching and tail-docking have reduced the susceptibility of sheep to breech strike, graziers remain almost totally reliant on insecticides for the control of strike.

Lucilia cuprina (Australian sheep blowfly) is the main initiator of flystrike in Australia. The metallic green/bronze fly is approximately 9mm in length. These flies breed mainly on living sheep and can lay up to 250 eggs in clusters at a time. Protecting your flock from flystrike saves you time, labour, money and most importantly, losses from death. Adopting an integrated approach to sheep blowfly strike is practical, effective and sustainable – crutching, drenching for worm control (to keep breech clean from scouring), grazing management and mulesing and tailing, all play a critical part in control.

This integrated approach is key to keeping fly strike under control. Many fly control products have no need for additional water, with ease of application in a backline formulation. Many products, such as Clik, also carry long protection periods, ensuring your flock is free from issue, allowing you to focus on other jobs.

AgriWest stocks a large range of quality fly control products, so visit their experienced animal health advisors to ensure you are protected for the season to come! Remember, healthy livestock are profitable livestock!

October is Mental Health Month

October 8, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

October is Mental Health Month and it is a time when everyone is encouraged to put their mental health first. It is a national mental health campaign co-ordinated every October by Mental Health Association NSW to promote good mental health and wellbeing in our local communities.

According to Mental Health Association NSW, each year mental health issues affect one in five Australians with anxiety disorders and depression the most common mental health challenges. Mental Health Month creates an opportunity for people to look at their own mental health and focus on ways to enhance social and emotional wellbeing while building personal resilience and support networks.

Senior Team Leader of Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol (MHDA) Service Terry Buckerfield said Western NSW Local Health District is working in partnership with various nongovernment organisations to host activities
during Mental Health Month with the theme ‘Value Your Mind’. “This year’s theme aims to encourage everyone to think about their own mental health while promoting the need for everyone to make mental health a priority in their daily life,” Terry said.

A number of activities will be held throughout October to highlight the importance of good mental health and wellbeing. “We will be holding training days in Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid, a Mental Health Forum, walks to raise postnatal depression awareness and suicide awareness, and also a number of fun events including a scavenger hunt, drumming workshops and lip sync battles,” Health Promotion and Prevention Officer Yvonne Muyambi said. “These events are a useful reminder for us all to think about our own mental health and the mental health of those around us – it is also a good excuse to get out there and have fun!”

Anyone with concerns about their mental health or that of a loved one should call the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511.

Peter Dawson Warms Up for the Championships

October 8, 2015 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s Men’s comp was the 18-hole Monthly Medal. There were 61 players in the field, which was quite good when we consider the last weekend of the school holidays, the attention of Grand Finals football, and the many events occurring around the town.

It was apt that the sponsors were Robb’s Jewellers, as there was many a bright crystal among the course conditions and the scoring. The winner of the A Grade Monthly Medal (22 players) was Peter ‘Ecky’ Dawson with a Nett score of 68. To produce his par round, Ecky’s shot 2-under for the front 9 and 2-over for the back 9. A bogey-bogey start to the back 9 put the pressure on him but he recovered well. This was surely a practice round with Ecky’s eye on the Championships commencing next week.

Rob Webb did very well, shooting a balanced 41 for both 9’s to finish Runner-up on nett 70, by count back. Rob was cruising on the front nine, then really whooped up with an eagle on the 6th. In B Grade (23), Cameron McMillan played steady golf to finish with a nett 70. His score on the 11th was a little untidy, but for the other 17 holes he was always around his handicap.

Runner-up was William Gordon (71 nett) who also was tidy, matching Cameron hole by hole except on the 4th and 13th, where he was a little astray. These two Junior players are really demonstrating the high calibre and depth of our Junior members. The C Grade (16) Monthly Medal very clearly showed that you do not need to be long to be a winner.

Frank Hanns took the honours with a carefully constructed nett 70, finishing one shot better than Runner-up Craig Myers. They played at opposite ends of the day, indicating that the conditions were very fair throughout. Craig found it better to score well by playing the fairway beside where he should have been. He met many players that way, but did not see much of his playing group.

The ball sweep went to 72 on count back and was shared by those above plus: 70 – D Bayley, 71 – S Grallelis, Andrew Drane, N McMillan, R Nixon, B Shine, 72 – A Rees, A McDonald, I Bown. Well done guys. Nearest the pins were: 9th – Anthony Gordon; 18th – Ron Morris. Anthony got his ‘2’ but Ronnie missed out. There were five 2’s scored all day, with the 9th hole being most prolific.

Jack Clarke needed his ‘2’ to try to stem the flow of lost holes for the “Keno Stakes”. He hoped his ‘2’ would pressure his opponent to miss his, but Stevie G held his nerve to get his and keep the foot hard down on the Keno stakes. There was some consistent play by many players. One consistency stands out markedly – 5’s on every hole on the back-9. Brian Everest achieved this feat, thankful that he had a good front-9 to make his card look respectable. The worst of it was 3-putt on the last hole to complete the set. Sunday’s play was an 18-hole Stableford
Medley. It was a small but lively field, with many players ‘absent on Grand Final duties’. However it was a good mix of men, ladies and visitors.

The winner was Jill Cripps with 39 points, just ahead of Rob Lea on 38 points. Unfortunately the scores took a dive from there, despite the good playing conditions. The ball sweep went to 33 and included Jill, Rob, and Mitchell Andrews (33) on count back. No 2’s were recorded, so the NTP’s are pretty lonely – 9Th: J Cripps; 18th: F Smith. This was a good day for the Ladies.

On Monday 5 October, which was a public holiday, there was also a Stableford Medley. There were 21 players who obviously wanted some fresh air after the Grand Final television watching blitz. The Duncan family must have been really happy with the AFL result, because they all were in good spirits, although Essendon did not play.

The winner was Biana Duncan, with 47 points, and ahead of Niel Duncan on 45 points. Briana was quite tidy on the front-9 but scored better on the back-9 despite having a ‘wipe’ on one hole. Scoring ‘4 pointers’ on the 10th, 14th and
16th holes really did the job and it was good golf all around.

The NTPs went to – 9th: N Duncan, 18th: E Hush. Niel got his ‘2’ but sadly Eileen missed out. Other 2’s, were scored on the 9th by J Cripps and the 1st by N Duncan, who luckily avoided the ‘A par on the 1st hole leads to a bad round’ rule. On Thursday 1 October, the Vets played a 12-hole event at Forbes in delightful conditions. Encouraging numbers of 32 players participated, with 19 from Forbes, and 13 from Parkes.

The winner was Milton Cartwright (F), with 27 points, a little lower than the conditions may have seemed likely. Runner-up on 26, by count back, was Dave Williams (F). The Bradman Award went to Allen Affleck (P) who just did not seem to get any rhythm going. He did manage more than one point per hole, just. The NTP’s went to – 9th A Grade: P Bishop, B Grade: T Edols; 18th A Grade: B Toole, B Grade L Byrne.

The Mick Miller Shield emphasised that when Forbes turn it on, they really turn it on. The field was fairly even, but it was an emphatic result for Forbes, with 151 points to Parkes 133. That was a real treat for the Forbes boys who have faltered over recent weeks. There are some very important AGM’s coming up. The Mens Committee AGM is scheduled for Thursday 15 October, at the Forbes Sportman’s Hotel. The following week, the FGA AGM is to be held on 21 October, also at the Sportsman’s Hotel.
