Forbes’ Lachlan Dragons are the Open Minor Champions after claiming gold in the Canberra regatta last weekend in a scintillating start to the 2022 racing season.

The club entered women’s, mixed and open events in the nation’s capital, also qualifying for the major finals in both women’s and mixed events in an outstanding series of results for the small Western club.

“Regattas are extremely competitive and to be honest I was happy we even had a team going,” said coach Chris Favelle.

“I was so excited for everyone and all the effort they have put in – they should all be proud of their achievements!”

The team also featured our own Maggi Barnard, Editor of the Parkes Phoenix and advocate for dragon boat racing in the region, who along with the rest of Forbes Lachlan Dragons, teamed up with Invictus Dragon Boat Club to enter the 20 seat 2km race – a great effort!

Forbes is warming up to host its own regatta on March 20 in what will be a huge day for the club.

“Forbes Dragon Boat club always welcomes new paddlers – male and female mixed and we are a social and inclusive club,” said Chris.

“It’s a great if you want something that isn’t as hard on the body,” he said.

“It’s a team sport, it’s mixed with men and women, it’s a really inclusive social network as well, not to mention a good way to keep fit and active,” he said.

“We are also finding more and more women are taking to the sport and this is also positive for the club,” Chris said.

If you’d like to come and try it, head to the boat shed on the edge of Lake Forbes behind the ‘Bowlie from 5.30pm on a Thursday, 8am Sunday’s and 5:45pm on Australia Day for a demonstration.
